  1. I will say this the referees are lucky that there wasnt a score, could you have imagined the chaos that would have followed if they did. If you went by the rules there should have been offsetting penalties on the play though, with a replay of down.
  2. for some reason if they did score I think that a flag would have been thrown for players being on the field. It would have been offsetting and the play would have to be redone. Also lost in this whole thing is how good Neb defense was. 3 of Mich TDs were on short fields. They also stopped Mich once after a int and held them to a FG attempt that was missed. Mich really only had one long drive all game. Several of Mich completions were exceptional individual plays from covered recievers. They also controlled the running game. In honesty except for maybe sp teams Neb really controlled this game
  3. mark r dont most fans of most teams make excusses when their team losses a close game. Then you throw in the fact that this game was so horribly reffed. If it was Mich St that lost like that I would probably be chanting all kinds of excusses. I am not sure who your favorite team is but you would probably be doing the same. In retrospect I dont think the last play was the worst. I think it was Carr having to use 2 timeouts to get a replay made. On top of the fact that the fumble on Neb 1st touchdown drive in the 1st quarter wasnt even reviewed. I dont know which way that would have went but it sure should have been reviewed. I am trying not to defend Mich and like I said in an earlier post some of the bad calls surely went against Neb. I just agree with Tirico and Herbstreit if you have instant replay use it. What is really a joke is you go ahead and review it after the timeout is called. What changed after the timeout was called? In neither case did Neb rush to get the next play off. Both plays should have been clearly reviewed before a timeout had to be taken. Luckily for all involved they got the calls right after the review.
  4. I think Trammell is probably damaged by the offensive production of the SS of late 90s and 00s. He was also hurt alot. I thought when they put Sandberg in last year it would be hard not to justify putting Trammell in. Probably the one thing against Trammell is he never had great national perception, partly because of ripken partly because he was a quiet guy. In the 80s I think I would just as easily taken trammel as ripken on my team though
  5. for about 10 yrs Rice was the best hitter in the American League. I dont know how old you guys are but I remember him being great. At one time he was considered a lock for the Hall. Like Dale Murphy. It is funny how a player from Boston doesnt get the media support to get in. One more thing, I dont think that Andre Dawson at the time he was playing was considered as dominant of player as Jim Rice when he was playing. I know the numbers are similar but the perception wasnt the same. Just something else to add to the arguement
  6. boy I dont want to feel bad for michigan but that was just awful. It was so bad that tirico gave up trying to be a biased announcer. really the refs were just bad but some of the calls did go against neb. What I want to know is was the guy that actually made the tackle part of the original defensve set?
  7. illiniguy I am glad you mentioned amaker as a bad coach. I know he came into some bad circumstances but really hasnt seemed to make Michigan any better. After the Horton incident last season they also dont seem to have improven off the court too much either. back to post subject I think that Illinois and MSU are still the class. I have been really impressed by the illinis defense so far this year. after these 2 I think its going to be OSU, WIS, IOWA, Ind, Minn, Mich and the field
  8. I am guessing that if we keep patterson it will only result in less ABs for Murton. So in my mind he does need to go
  9. I have been critical of the Cubs giving a big lone term deal to JJones. I still would not want to get him for more than 1 year. However he did set a career high in Walks last year. If he was able to duplicate that and get his average up to .275 and get his doubles total back into the 30s, he would then be a decent player. Of course we would need another MVP type year out of Lee and some added production out of ARam, Murton, Pierre and Barrett to have a really good offense. Also since we have already added a player that we hope rebounds from a bad season(Pierre), and relying on a couple of unproven players(cedeno, murton and if dusty will play them) this would seem like we are taking way to many risks. For some reason I think that if the Cardinals added him he would be that 275 33 doubles 23 hr 350 obp guy. If we added him I feel like he would probably be the 245 23 doubles 28 hr 318 obp guy that he has been the last couple of years
  10. I would rather have Sammy at league minimum than JJones at anything over 2 mill
  11. You know it just drives me crazy that we talk about trading a young talented player with good upside for julio lugo just because we have a stupid manager. In the real world you would be considered a idiot to even consider trading cedeno for lugo. The reality is that Neifi would probably take alot of lugos ABs also, so I say keep ronny.
  12. what I dont understand is why the Cubs seem to not want to use him though. He is apparently untouchable but seems destined for AAA at age 26
  13. Actually this is kind of what I am saying. Its not like the Cubs have ever been a small market club. Even in the years we thought they were going cheap they were still about 10th in payroll. I am all for being a high payroll team but it seems that some of the money isnt always being well spent. I personnally wouldnt mind if they went with an all out youth movement. Or I wouldnt mind if they just started to spend money to insure they get the best players through trade or free-agency. I jsut wish they would go one way or another. It wouldnt bother me if the went 70-92 with a low payroll and a YOUNG team(not 31 yr old never weres) I am just get sick of trying to be competitive with a top ten payroll and never seeming to be even very competitive. For a team that will have a 10 million dollar payroll we are going to have some glarring weaknessess on our roster. I also wouldnt want to go with a youth movement every other year like the Royals, Pirates, and the Expos used to do. What Cleveland has done does seem to be successful so far but will it last? I guess what I am saying is I would rather lose with young guys busting their tails and improving than with a $100 million payroll of pure frustration.
  14. I have a Question. If the Cubs completely bomb this year. I am not saying it will happen just what if it happens. Lets say Hendry gets the axe in mid-season or after the season and the new GM decides that what is going on here is useless so he completely dismantles the team. Lets Lee and Pierre go in FA. Doesnt pick up Woods option. Trades Prior, Howry, Dempster and Barrett. Just basically goes with what Cleveland did several years ago or with what Florida is doing now. Maybe keeps Z and ARAM. Starts going with youth and acquiring top level prospects from other organizations. Then hires a young up and coming manager from a team that seems to know how to develop young players. Would you be mad if this happened? Remember the team would probably have to flop again this year, so consider that before you answer.
  15. steve, the funny thing about you saying get your head out of the Baseball Abstract and start watching games is one of the reasons Bill James quit writing the Abstract is because people were starting to rely more on statistical data then watching games.
  16. The funny thing about him saying he would pay half his salary to play in Wrigley field all the time. At the time he played Yankee stadium was only like 295 down the right field line.
  17. Can Young play RF? Is he alot better than Butnitz?
  18. why dont we just let Murton play left. Cheaper and will probably give us about as much production as Green or Tracy.
  19. wow I'm a NUN, I better change. I looked it up right after I posted because I couldnt believe that I would have been the only one smart enough to catch it. It turns out I was the only one dumb enough to think it
  20. jehrico, Doesnt corey throw LH. I should look it up to make sure but I am pretty sure he does. It would be almost a complete waste of time to teach him 2nd and SS is he does throw LH edit: I knew I should have looked it up. He does throw RH sorry for the mistake
  21. Champions take risks!!!! Losers play it safe
  22. I actually kind of agree with you. The Cubs are not going to trade Perez though. I dont think the Cubs really need high end talent. They just need to improve their bottom talent. I think they have actually improved quite abit at the end of our roster. Depending on who they get for RF and maybe another SP I think this is stacking up to be a pretty successful off season.
  23. during his interwiew with Mike North he had a chance to say good stuff about Murton but didnt. He has not given him any endorsements at all. He has actually talked pretty highly about cedeno in some places though. It drives me crazy when he says things about poor fundementals. This is his fault. Take some responsibility dude
  24. to be honest free agency is usually a bad deal. You are usually paying higher value for declining talent. Of all the guys listed who is really worth the money he is making? Probably only Vlad and Arod and they are making 18 million and 25 million. Paying frucal 13 mill would be ridiculous. I would rather have cedeno. I would bet that about 28 other teams would rather have cedeno at league minimum than frucal at 13 mill. Maybe Mariotti ought to ask what big time free agent that the White Sox brought in last year? It isnt always about landing a big time free agent it is about building a better team. Are the Cubs a better team right now than they were last year. I would say yes. depending on who they add in RF they could be substancially better than last year. Also the Cubs already have superstars, what they really need to do is fill in the gaps better, which I feel they have done pretty well this off season so far.
  25. I will say that his weak arm isnt his only defensive liability. He also doesnt take good routes to the ball. Also probably wont cost them as much at wrigley as other parks.
