  1. Well, compared to a Taj Gibson, who doesn't do anything particularly well and isn't expected to amount to much, Blair is a fantastic rebounder, which is a skill that translates very well to the pros.
  2. WE ARE N STATE
  3. All it's doing is rating how teams have done over 72 years. What's so hard to understand that Illinois was a superior program to Duke for like the first 50 years of the rankings? According to Sagarin's formula. UI over UConn, I guess I can accept, since they've only been relevant for about twenty years. Duke has a history that extends for a long time. I don't care if UI racked up wins in the 40s, 50s, and 60s--that success shouldn't outweigh the success Duke has had from the 60s on. JMO. Nothing to get worked up about. UI over Duke is hardly the only one that made me double take. Although the system did count tournament wins double, I wonder how different it would look had championship wins counted twice as much as any other win, or if it had been scaled to reward recent performance more than historical.
  4. I can only imagine where Illinois would be if they were decent in the 70s.
  5. Because I find the numbers interesting, FO's team DVOA numbers (spoilered for much data): This is the first week that results are actually opponent-adjusted. The DAVE ratings are based partly on preseason projections. 0 is average in the league. Positive DVOA is better offensively, worse defensively. Some surprising things to me: - Wow, look at Jacksonville's offense. That's why they are as high as they are overall. - On the flip side, wow, look at the Jets' offense. - DVOA always loves Philly. They play so well year in, year out, it makes you wonder how they struggle as much as they do. - After four weeks, there are just two teams that are above average in all facets: Philly and Minnesota. I'm sure their fourth phases are terrible, though. - Tennessee's special teams is awful. Chicago's special teams is awesome.
  6. How about that early season Redskins schedule, though? Sure, Giants week 1 was rough, but since then through week 6: vs. Rams, @ Lions, vs. Bucs, @ Panthers, vs. Chiefs.
  7. I don't think any team is a sure thing this year, but right now it's hard to say they're not a league favorite. Illusion or not, the only loss between the teams was against each other. The Broncos are better than the Cowboys, and the Bengals won in Green Bay. Those two victories at the least make them worthy of being mentioned as a contender right now.
  8. I think there's some clear separation in the league right now. There's a clear top 6 favorites (Colts, Ravens, Pats, Giants, Vikings, Saints), a clear next 10 contenders (Steelers, Broncos, Chargers, Jets, Bengals, Bears, Packers, Eagles, Falcons, 49ers), a clear group of 8 "spoilers" with a remote prayer of getting back into it (Texans, Jags, Titans, Dolphins, Seahawks, Cardinals, Cowboys, Panthers), and a clear group of 8 terrible teams that no decent team should lose to (Bills, Raiders, Chiefs, Browns, Lions, Redskins, Bucs, Rams). Oddly enough, the AFC and NFC is split evenly through the groups.
  9. Uh, where's my beer(s)? FINE, round of beers on me.
  10. So the Big Ten has been consistently good for 72 years, then.
  11. Oh, that reminds me, now I definitely owe Navin a beer.
  12. Here's how I'd rank the teams after roughly 1/4 of the season: 1. Colts 2. Saints 3. Vikings 4. Giants 5. Ravens 6. Pats 7. Broncos 8. 49ers 9. Eagles 10. Bears 11. Jets 12. Packers 13. Steelers 14. Falcons 15. Chargers 16. Bengals 17. Jaguars 18. Cowboys 19. Texans 20. Cardinals 21. Dolphins 22. Seahawks 23. Titans 24. Redskins 25. Bills 26. Panthers 27. Lions 28. Raiders 29. Bucs 30. Chiefs 31. Browns 32. Rams Personally, after 22, everybody's done. And I don't like any team after 15.

    2010 Keepers

He went over the start limit in July for me to keep him in the minors, and he was pitching like crap for the fourth year straight. Couldn't afford to stash him on the bench and release one of my other guys at the time, so I had to dump him.
  15. Well, he's certainly the safety-est pick in the draft...
  16. An interesting observation on the defensive effort Sunday:
  17. That's not how it's been defined by much of the media though. People have been painting the picture that parity=mediocirity=everybody goes 7-9 or 9-7. The NFL is set-up so that any team can recover from being horrible and win big in a short amount of time. You can suck every year if you are run by incompetent morons, Detroit. And I think that's a very good thing for a sport. I haven't really heard that definition of parity, but if that's what they're pushing, it's wrong. Parity means terrible/mediocre teams can improve quickly (SF, Denver, Cincy) and good teams can collapse (Ten, Dal?). The NFL does have parity this year. Parity technically means similar. In reference to sports, it generally is used to denote all teams are similar, there are no great or awful teams. In the NFL, that is not the case year to year. Overall, there is a general similarity in most of the teams, aside from the most outstanding (NE) or the most disappointing (Detroit).
  18. Yeah, I don't really think anybody expected Lee to finish with the 5th best OPS in baseball after his April. Post-ASB, he actually led all of baseball in OPS.
  19. Chone Figgins was 6th in the AL with a .395 OBP and led the AL in walks with 101.

    2010 Keepers

Yeah, I got the 11 pick in the deal too. Looking at my keepers, holy crap did Vazquez get a lot of points late. My keepers look like this: Exempt - 9 possible, keeping 7 Sandoval Montero Masterson Niemann Marcum Jones Lowrie Lannan Detwiler Points - up to 2000 Keeping one of: Haren or Vazquez Keeping two of: Roberts, Bay, Ichiro, Cruz Pretty much anybody (except for Sandoval and Montero) is available for the right deal, as I have both high points players and exempt players available. Looking for draft picks and/or prospects.
  21. There's never really been parity in the NFL. Every year there's at least one team that wins 75% of their games and at least one team that loses 75% of their games. There's less parity in the NFL than any other sport. There are, however (assuming Minnesota wins), six 3-1 teams, two 2-1 teams, seven 2-2 teams, a 1-2 team, five 1-3 teams and an 0-3 team. So, really, 4 games into the season the distribution is pretty standard.
  22. My thoughts on the Broncos: If the defense is going to be that good, they don't need much from Orton to win (see: the Bears past 3-4 years). However, there is no scenario in which they are a better team because of the QB change.
  23. It's difficult to discern how well he's doing because the left side of the line collapses so quickly so often. I suppose it's a good thing that usually the right side lasts longer than the left.
  24. http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/09000d5d81323168/Bears-48-Lions-24 Well, I did it the last two weeks, so hey, why not hear Joniak call 6 TDs. :)
  25. Today's Cub loss puts the Cubs drafting 15th next year, which is protected.
