  1. Spain is out, losing to Serbia 92-89 in the quarters. Serbia hit a shot nearly from half court with 3 seconds left to win it.
  2. This is lame, pointless, would never happen, and foolish in many ways. Breaking up the current conferences just to "balance" based on how teams are currently performing is the worst way to do any sort of realignment.
  3. The funniest result of the afternoon was when France tried to lose to New Zealand to avoid Greece in the round of 16, only to lose by 1 point too much (NZ was fouling at the end up 9 because they needed to win by 12) at the end, and instead of throwing the game by a few to face Russia, they lost by 12 and now will face Turkey in the round of 16. Also, as a result, Greece, who looked (at least early on) like they were trying to lose to avoid Spain in the round of 16, lost and get to face Spain anyway, trusting that France would have no problem with New Zealand.
  4. Huge break for the US team, as France lost to New Zealand by enough that Spain passed them both in point differential. Here is the round of 16: 1A - Serbia v. 4B - Croatia 2D - Spain v. 3C - Greece 1C - Turkey v. 4D - France 2B - Slovenia v. 3A - Australia 1B - USA v. 4A - Angola 2C - Russia v. 3B - New Zealand 1D - Lithuania v. 4C - France 2A - Argentina v. 3B - Brazil Spain-Greece and Argentina-Brazil should be the highlights of the round of 16.
  5. I'm kind of surprised Sanchez didn't even get ejected for that.
  6. Actually, Ivory Coast led Puerto Rico by 12 with under 10 seconds left, and PR tossed up a meaningless 3 at the buzzer to lose by 9. However, since China beat Ivory Coast by 10 and Puerto Rico beat China by 8, that meaningless 3 ended up being the tiebreaker difference to knock out the Ivory Coast.
  7. They signed Antero Nittymaki too.
  8. Scoring average...it's not that hard to decipher. EDIT: The second tiebreaker is essentially differential of games between tied teams. That is why China already is advancing regardless of tonight's result.
  9. US beats Tunisia by 34, will play Angola in round of 16. Likely quarterfinal opponent will be winner of a Greece-Spain round of 16 game.
  10. All of them or any of them?
  11. Team USA cruised to an 88-51 victory over Iran today, and became the first team to secure their exact spot in the knockout round, as they clinched 1st place in Group B. Most of the knockout round spots are getting set today, but not specifically the order of finish: Group A: Argentina, Serbia, Australia, Angola - Serbia-Argentina winner wins group, Australia-Angola loser finishes 4th (and plays the US in the round of 16) Group B: 1. USA - The winner of the Brazil-Slovenia game is in the knockout round, likely second. Group C: Turkey, Greece, Russia - Turkey beat both Greece and Russia, so they win the group unless they lose their last 2. Greece-Russia loser finishes 3rd. Group D: France, Lithuania, Spain, New Zealand - France-Lithuania winner wins group, Spain will finish 3rd unless they lose to Canada and New Zealand beats France. As for how this affects the US, they'll play A-4 in the round of 16, which will be the loser of Argentina-Angola (likely Angola). In the quarters, they'll face the winner of C-2 and D-3, which will be Spain (D-3) against likely the Greece-Russia winner.
  12. Today's results make things more difficult for the US. Granted, their round of 16 game will likely be against the Germany-Angola winner, but with both Spain and Greece losing to Lithuania and Turkey, respectively, it is becoming likely that Spain v Greece will be a round of 16 game, with the winner to face the US in the quarters.
  13. I'm mostly concerned that this is what the first round will look like (according to FIFA rankings): GROUP 1A GROUP 1B GROUP 1C GROUP 1D 1. USA 2. Mexico 3. Costa Rica 4. Honduras 16. Bermuda 15. Cuba 14. Guyana 13. Antigua and Barbuda 17. Barbados 18. Suriname 19. N. Antilles 20. St. Kitts/Nevis 32. US Virgin Is. 31. Aruba 30. Bahamas 29. British Virgin Is. GROUP 1E GROUP 1F GROUP 1G GROUP 1H 5. Canada 6. El Salvador 7. Panama 8. Jamaica 12. Grenada 11. Guatemala 10. Haiti 9. Trinidad and Tobago 21. Nicaragua 22. Puerto Rico 23. St. Vincent 24. Cayman Islands 28. Turks/Caicos 27. St. Lucia 26. Dominica 25. Belize That's six games against drecks. Then there's a whole second round of more drecks (if seeds hold to form, second round would be like US/Jamaica/T&T/Bermuda). The unfortunate fact about CONCACAF is, there are maybe 7-8 decent squads, with just 2-3 quality squads in a given cycle (two of which are always Mexico and the US, since 2000 at least). There's no need to involve so many teams in the introductory qualification process.
  14. According to the new proposed CONCACAF 2014 qualifying format, the US and Mexico may never actually meet in qualifying prior to the World Cup. That's not good for either squad. EDIT: The system 1. Preliminary round (if needed) to trim the number of teams to 32. 2. 8 groups of 4 teams. Top two in each group through to the next round. 3. 4 groups of 4 teams. Top two in each group through to the next round. 4. 2 groups of 4 teams. If CONCACAF will have 3.5 spots, the winners of the groups will qualify directly to the World Cup, while the second placed teams will play-off against each other first, then against a team from another confederation (CONMEBOL). If CONCACAF gets 4 spots as they hope, the top two teams in each group will qualify to the World Cup.
  15. Man, I can't wait until basketball starts, either.
  16. US wins by 2, 70-68. Everybody played poorly today. Next two should be a breeze, so at this point the US team has basically won the group.
  17. It seems to be the consensus that the top 4 are a cut above anyone else in the conference. Here's who they only play once: Purdue vs. Northwestern @ Michigan Ohio State vs. MSU @ Northwestern Michigan State @ OSU vs. Indiana Illinois vs. Michigan @ Minnesota Northwestern and Michigan are the two teams with the most favorable Big Ten schedules. On the flip side, Purdue got the toughest, I think.
  18. He's hit a few, missed a few. Hasn't shot more than 1-2 a game. My guess is he's made about 50% of what he's taken, which is good but obviously a tiny sample size. It's also a poor indicator, since the international 3-point line is so much shorter than the NBA 3-point line.
  19. Team USA beat Greece (#4 in the world) 87-59 today. Rose played just 19 minutes, but went 6-7 (missed a 3) for 13 points with 2 rebounds, 2 assists and no turnovers. Eric Gordon led all scorers with 18 points.
  20. Well, you had to figure with 5 PGs on the roster of 13, that one of them was going to be the final cut. Odd that Rondo had slipped to third on the depth chart behind Rose and Westbrook, though.
  21. Soto is dealing with an injury, and the season is over. The more Koyie Hill, the better at this point. You realize we have Robinson Chirinos, who is putting up ridiculous numbers at AA and is the best defensive catcher in the Southern League, and Castillo who is already up, right? Castillo would be fine to get a good look at to see if he's viable for next year. Chirinos can just stay in the minors until next year at this point. I'd rather not see Soto the rest of the year if he's hurting, though.

    Week 19

Niemann to DL, Victorino from DL.
  24. Brutal start to the year (again, thanks, circus trip), with their first 8 road games being OKC, Boston, Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, LA Lakers, Phoenix, and Denver, all in the first 4 weeks of the season. Then the circus trip ends, and they come home to Orlando, Houston, OKC and the LA Lakers again. The end of the season is light, though. Of course, I fully expect the media to panic when the Bulls start out something like 4-10 this year. EDIT: The plus side is that the Bulls are done with the Lakers, Thunder, Rockets and Nuggets 5 weeks into the year.
  25. I think if I just shot the worst tournament of my professional career, I probably wouldn't have much to say about it either.
