Yeah, that's a great assessment of what the team lacks - explosive speed. As you said, even on offense but especially on defense since the defense lacks the playmakers the offense has. Man, I love the Pac 10 this year. Loaded with explosive defensive prospects. UCLA and Washington in particular. But all of Kikaha, Kendricks, Thompson, Peters, Ekpre-Olomu, Shelton, UCLA DE who's name I can't spell would all be excellent picks for the Bears. All are top 60 guys IMO too. Owamagbe Odigihzuwa. And man, I love Shaq Thompson. Just imagine him as the nickel LB dropping back in coverage against the Packers instead of Bostic. There are some elite Pac-12 LBs who are perfect for the more pass-friendly NFL - Thompson and sophomores Myles Jack and Su'a Cravens. Nah, this draft is loaded with DL talent. A bunch of them may be tweeners (i.e. DT/DE and DE/OLB hybrids), but still a pretty good class. Agreed, but that's what I mean. We don't do well with tweeners, at least this staff hasn't so far. Funny thing is I think they could use a McClellin type smaller guy to speed rush the passer on 3rd and long, but he needs to have functional strength and actual pass rush moves. It would be interesting to see if they could figure out how to use a guy like Beasley at LB on run downs and at end in the nickel.

Bears need more speed overall. I think they need to make a point to get faster on all phases. They need a dynamic edge guy who can fly. I'd love to see Briggs (or Williams, with Bostic going to WLB) replaced by a LB that can really run and tackle well. Then I'd like to see more speed added on the back end. Preferably at safety, though another CB to cover speed in the slot would be nice too. I'd also like a speed WR/RB type just for fun gimmicky plays like the Jeffery TD, but with a faster guy you could do that from further away from the endzone. Or run the end around with Marshall AND Jeffery blocking on the outside.

Was up 1 with Gostkowski and Chandler Jones (IDP) against Julian Edelman in a PPR league. Figured I wouldn't win, but when Edelman only had 3.8 points at halftime, I still had a slight lead thanks to Chandler Jones who had 2 points on the 1st drive of the game, and a Gostkowski PAT. Went to bed look at the boxscore only to see Edelman had 1 more catch for over 10 yards and I only got 1 more PAT. Lost by 127.6 to 128.8. All I needed was a FG or a sack by Jones. First loss of the season. 3-1 in both my money leagues.

Florida is 85th in total defense. Ole Miss is 4th. The Rebs have only given up 34 points through 4 games, with 19 of those 34 points coming in 4th quarter junk time with the starters out. Memphis put up 469 total yards at UCLA and yet only got 104 yards total yards at Ole Miss (42 of which were on a single play). Ole Miss' defense is ferocious this year. However, I still think Bama wins because Ole Miss just doesn't beat Bama ever. I am secretely hoping Cody Prewitt stops being so good so the Bears can take him with their (hopefully late) 2nd round pick in the 2015 draft. Arguably the best two draft-eligible safeties will be playing in this game. No argument from me.

Eh. A week ago, Bostic had the best game of his career and was the best of the Bears front 7, Fuller followed up DPOTW with DROTW, McClellin was solid, Vereen had solid coverage on the game ending play after playing solid at nickel in a pinch the week before, Sutton had a strong showing in his first NFL start and Ferguson had his first career sack. Theyre young, theyll be inconsistent. But all those guys can be part of a solid NFL defense.

Cam isn't anywhere near Rodgers' level. I had to look up what he's doing this year. It was kind of surprising to see some of his #'s: pretty good completion percentage. 9 completed throws over 20 yards. Only 3 TD passes though, probably relying on the running game alot down by the goal line. Still though, I'll have to see him beat us like a rag doll like Rodgers did before I believe it. HUGE knock on wood. I wasn't saying he's as good as Rodgers. I was saying that most NFL QBs will pick apart a basic ass zone. Hence, the following sentence about Manuel, who completed 73% of his passes against a Bears D that got very little pass rush and sat in zone coverage all day.

Without pressure, it was basically 7-on-7 for Rodgers against that zone. The few blitzes called were incredibly predictable and easily picked up. Some creativity was needed. Not even just blitzes. Stunt. Stand a guy up just to throw [expletive] off. Throw some different looks in there. How much was Houston on the interior with a 3rd DE in there? Not that any of the 3 CBs played well, but I would have liked to seen Jennings on Cobb in the slot more and Fuller on Nelson more. Hopefully, they would have won more battles that way and you could have at least forced Rodgers to throw to his 3rd Wr on Frey on the outside.

Hopefully, the Bears get Slauson, McClellin, McManis, Ratliff, and Allen back to practice early this week and ready to play on Sunday. Hopefully, McManis gets some run at nickel in place of Frey. Hopefully, Marshall is able to practice so he knows the right routes to run. I still like this team when healthy, not that lack of health cost them yesterday. But depth was a strong suit this year, unlike year's past and it's been shot to hell all year.

Cam Newton isn't as crappy a thrower as Kaepernick or Geno Smith. If the Bears sit in a zone all day, he'll pick them apart just like Rodgers did. Hell, just like Manuel did (and nobody talks about) in the opener. The offense should probably try to put together 2 good halves too.

The bottom line is they didn't score. That is the whole point. Trestman has been a terrific influence on the offensive system, but he suffers from significant weakness when it comes to NFL head coaching duties, including time management and just knowing the GD rules. Time management on the field is his fault? Why isn't that Cutler's fault?

I know it's early, but we're 1/4 of the way thru the season and Lamarr Houston is on pace for 4 solo tackles, 8 assists for 12 total tackles and 0 sacks.

I feel like the 2-minute stuff is overblown. Fans get antsy when they see the clock moving and what looks like no sense of urgency. Hell, the Bears played the game-winning drives to open last season the exact same way. And the bottom line is they DID actually score on the drive. If that play would have been called correctly, nothing to complain about. As for the defense, there is never an excuse to sit back in zone and still get picked apart. This isn't Geno Smith. Aaron Rodgers doesn't make mistakes when he has time to throw to a guy sitting in a zone. Ideally, you want to get pressure from the front 4. Every team in the history of the forward pass wants to do that. But when you are not....you gotta force the issue. That's my issue with Tucker for the last 1 1/4 years. What difference does it make if you allow an 8 play, 80 yard drive for a TD or give up a 70-yard bomb for a TD? Don't get pressure + sit in zone = hope for a red zone stop to hold them to a FG. Bring blitz + man coverage = hope for no big play, but have a chance to make a big play FOR your team.

Maybe the 2 most talented players in this year's draft other than Clowney. Aaron Lynch's freshman year at Notre Dame was basically on par with Clowney's. Henderson was the #1 HS recruit in his class and was a beast of a teenager with amazing agility for someone his size.
