  1. Furcal could have finished the year with his April/May numbers, and would still get $8M for at least 4 years this offseason (see Renteria, Cabrera, Guzman). SS's are seriously overvalued. I wouldn't touch Furcal. I like him as a player, but no reason to bring in a long-term option at SS without giving Cedeno a shot. I would look to bring back Nomar and get Cedeno a ton of action if/when Nomar goes to the DL and against LHPs at 2B (assuming Hairston is not back).
  2. Agreed. I'm far from sold on him. He's far from a can't miss prospect. I would love to bring back Lawton and go get Giles, but I don't know if the Cubs would do that financially, especially since I'm assuming Nomar will be back. Now Dunn will be cheaper than Giles for at least a year, so I think the Cubs could do Dunn, and Lawton/Nomar to 1-year deals each. Or the Cubs could do Giles, Lawton and go out and trade for Lugo.
  3. I have never seen him pitch, but Pawelek reminds me of Justin Jones. I think he will have that type of assent up the prospect rankings and turn heads while doing it. Very polished highschool lefty.
  4. Giles would be a good signing. He is older, but I would expect him to be very productive for at least 2 years. At worst, I think he could put up close to his 04 numbers for 2-3 years (.870-.910 OPS). At best, you get this year's Giles with his normal power production (.950 OPS). I would offer him a 2-year deal with an option for a 3rd. Maybe 2/$18M-20M, $11M/year 3rd year option with $2.5M buyout. I don't see Atlanta as much of a factor, as their young OFs have been solid, and they don't have the need or the money. Of course, Dunn would be my #1 choice. A trade for Ramirez would be next. But I'd put signing Giles ahead of Damon, or trading for Huff or Floyd. If the Cubs got Giles, I would probably not bring back Lawton, although I'd love his OBP.
  5. Astros playing more fundamental than the Cubs? They're giving up barely 2 runs a game since the break. The Cubs offense has a 30 point OPS advantage on Houston since the break, but Houston has scored 8 more runs. The pitching is good.....but not THAT good. The offense has been lucky since the break. They will come back down to Earth. That being said, I don't know if they come down far enough for the Cubs to catch them unless they beat them up in the head-to-head.
  6. I would trade both. Not sure the Reds need a middle IF, but I would do that trade a million times. And I'm a big fan of Hill and Cedeno.
  7. Dunn is hitting .295 with an OPS over 1.100 since July 1st. I wish he were on my team.
  8. How much did having mono take out of you a couple years ago? How much weight, strength, etc did you lose? How soon was it until you were fully recovered and in baseball shape.
  9. What? Are you telling me it's not just the ball he can't get up? BTW, I never understood Burroughs lack of power. He's a big boy. He doesn't seem to swing down at the ball either.
  10. Compared to a week ago, the demand will continue to decrease as fewer teams remain contenders. However, the supply of tradeable players was dramatically reduced as now only players who can clear waivers are available. So I think Griffey, Sweeney, et al are actually worth more now that they don't have to compete with Dunn, Huff, etc. Fewer players available, but also fewer teams. I guess it could go either way. But you also have to factor in the time lost. The players should be cheaper simply because instead of 2 months of that player, you have 1 1/2 months.
  11. I agree with Stark. I'm really surprised that Griffey, Sweeney and Alfonzo are still on their same teams after they've brought interest. All 3 will end up getting traded, and probably for a lot less than they've would have brought a week ago.
  12. Carlos Marmol rules! I'm gonna have a hard time keeping him out of the top 10 if he keeps this up. Wonder what the Cubs will do about putting him on the 40-man. BTW, I haven't seen much discussion about it, but I like Buck Coats in CF. He started his Cub career as a corner OF, but I think he could be a solid player in CF, as it looks like SS is too much for him defensively.
  13. Man, I hope he doesn't so well in the pen that the Cubs make him a permanent reliever.
  14. Which player that you have coached in the Cubs organization do you think would make the most successful manager?
  15. Despite all my "bashing" of Corey, I'm pulling like Hell for the guy. I like him. I like what he brings to the table in CF and his speed on the basepaths. I just wish he'd change his plate approach, he thinks he is/should be a cleanup-type hitter - aka, a "power" guy. Don't get me wrong, he's got "pop in his bat", but he's no DLee, Ramirez, or Burnitz. I honestly believe that just because he plays CF, hits lefty, and has similar body-type/speed as Ken Griffey, Jr did early in his career, Corey thinks should be a HR hitter destined to hit 500+ like KG,Jr did/was. It just doesn't work that way. Griff, as a youngster and in his prime, was special. His swing was the prettiest/most effortless around during that time, and it still looks good. Don't try and be the next KG, Corey... just be Corey Patterson and play to your strengths. Corey is playing into his strengths....the problem is his strengths expose his weaknesses. He led the MWL in SLG in his 1st pro season. He was top 3 in the Southern League in HRs. He hit 24 HRs last year. He slugged .511 the year before. I believe that people think because he's small he has to be a slap hitter. That's not his strength, although it'd be nice if he had the ability to do it a little.
  16. You were an oldschool ESPN guy weren't you? Welcome!
  17. Heck, why not? What do the Cubs have to lose? Improve the defense. Don't lose a much with the bat (compared to Hairston, Hollandsworth). And there's still the upside. If Corey struggles, the Cubs aren't in a position anymore where they even have to play him everyday. At best, he turns it around and helps the Cubs win games. At worst, the Cubs can make a decision on what to do with him this offseason. Gets the August roster we projected in April (with Williams and Lawton instead of Hawkins and Dubois) on the field together.
  18. Roy Oswalt was a 20th rounder too... I'd say he has a fair amount of raw talent. Sometimes every team just misses on a guy's potential. Agreed. But overwhelmingly that's not the norm.
  19. Maybe he's having problems focusing in front of the home folks. Combined with tough hitting conditions (lot of his power to CF and LCF), it's been a tough season. I really don't know though definitively, obviously.
  20. I agree with Tim, except that I put Harvey ahead of Dopirak right now. 21 is young for Daytona. I believe 22.4 or so has been the average age for a few seasons in the FSL. Are people just looking at the numbers and discounting Dopirak? What about his improved K rate? What about the fact that he has been a little unlucky on balls in play? And if it's anyone who's power has probably been an anomoly it is Dope. I think we all know he's not a .140 ISOP hitter. And when comparing players, you have to take all things in context. You not only have to take the current year, but career trends and even go back as far as pre-pro. I know the draft is a crapshoot, but there's a reason why Dopirak was a 2nd rounder and Sing a 20th rounder. The raw talent is there. As Tim said, Dopirak is the highest risk, highest reward prospect in the system.
  21. Wow! And he lied to Congress. Could be major reprucussions for Raffy.
  22. http://www.northsidebaseball.com/Prospects/FarmReport.php?ID=58 It's back! Sorry about the hiatus.
  23. Bob Brenly during the 10th inning show assumed that Lawton would be playing CF, but I just can't see the Cubs making that choice. Burnitz seems the strongest defensive OFer the Cubs have regardless of speed, he has the most experience playing CF and has logged meaningful time there most recently. I think the choices come down to Burnitz or Hairston in CF. But I definitely agree that Lawton is leading off. My line-up against favorable right-handed starter match-ups would be: Lawton - LF Nomar - SS Lee - 1B Burnitz - CF Ramirez - 3B Walker - 2B Barrett - C Hollandsworth - RF Against all lefties and the favorable righty match-up I would have: Lawton - RF Nomar - SS Lee - 1B Ramirez - 3B Burnitz - CF Barrett - C Walker - 2B (with the occasional start from Hairston) Murton - LF You would still start Hollandsworth? I'd put him behind Murton and Hairston, and probably start JH Jr (with Murton in AA) because he's the best CF of that group (Burnitz included). I'd rather have Patterson back up here than that.
