  1. Nobody has argued that in this thread at all. I agree that Furcal would NOT be the best use of alloted funds...but that's not been what this back and forth has been about.
  2. I think if a GM spends $8MM on a position player and get under .350 OBP or under .750 OPS, he's a fool. I'd rather spend $8MM+ on a left fielder who can post an .850+ OPS. I really don't think a .340 OBP or .746 OPS is rare enough to spend big bucks and call it an upgrade. Yeah, what CP20 said. BTW, unless you are getting Tejada, Peralta, Jeter, or Michael Young in Arlington, you are very likely to have a SS under a .750 OPS. The only others ahead of Furcal in OPS are Bill Hall (30 points lower OBP), Felipe Lopez (same OBP, more power), and Russ Adams (with a whopping 1 point edge in OPS). A SS with a .750 OPS is gonna go for $8M. An OF with a .750 OPS is gonna be a 4th OF unless he's on the Cubs then he could start at any of the 3 OF positions.
  3. Well, your stance in then seems to be that everyone is overpaid. I don't mean this personally in any way, but it doesn't matter what any one person thinks a player is worth. The market determines it. If you look at the money and years that players like Guzman, Renteria, Cabrera, and Nomar got.....in that case, Furcal is "worth" way more than $5M.
  4. Furcal's OPS is practically meaningless. Any leadoff hitter's is. I'd take a .600 OPS from my leadoff guy if it meant he was hitting .200/.400/.200, especially when you add in his ability to steal a base at a great clip. I don't buy that. A player is more valuable when he can get past first base on his own, whether it's by hitting 2B, 3B, HR, or by stealing bases. Of course, Furcal steals a lot of bases at a pretty good percentage(92/107, 86% the last 3 years), so on the whole he's probably more valuable than his OPS indicates. Agreed. I was seriously exaggerating. But your final line was my intended point.

I'd take a .600 OPS from my leadoff guy if it meant he was hitting .200/.400/.200, especially when you add in his ability to steal a base at a great clip. Furcal's career OBP is .346, and .341 as a leadoff hitter. THis year, it is (again) .340 He's just not that good a hitter. There is no way that man is a $6-8MM + player. I'm not arguing how good he is. Just that I could care less about his OPS as a leadoff hitter. His OPS shouldn't be a knock against him. I agree that his OBP isn't that great. And I agree that I wouldn't pay more than $8M for him.
  6. Furcal's OPS is practically meaningless. Any leadoff hitter's is. I'd take a .600 OPS from my leadoff guy if it meant he was hitting .200/.400/.200, especially when you add in his ability to steal a base at a great clip.
  7. I'd do it too. It's one thing to overpay. But it's another to overpay when the alternative is suckiness.
  8. No reason to shut Prior down. Just watch him more closely. I think him finishing this season would be big for him. Only a freak linedrive kept him from missing starts this year. No real reason to shut Zambrano down either. Just allow him to throw 85-95 pitches each time out and don't keep him out there with unnecessarily huge leads.
  9. Everything I've ever read has said Murton doesn't have the arm to play right. I could see moving CP to right to get Hairston (CF) and Murton (LF) in the lineup everyday. I'd also have CP between Barrett and Murton in the lineup. I actually originally had Corey in RF. But it's not really important about getting an arm in RF right now. Just get Murton on the field. I'd like the Cubs to go out and get a RF, who produces like a RF and thus can move Murton to LF. Giles doesn't have a RFs arm, but I'd stick him there in a minute for his offense.
  10. I'm with Vance. My everyday lineup. LF- Hairston 2B- Walker 1B- Lee 3B- Nomar RF- Murton C- Barrett SS- Cedeno CF- Patterson Shut down Wood. Limit the innings of Zambrano and Maddux. Limit Prior's pitch count. Let Hill spot start/long relieve for Zambrano/Maddux. Play Fontenot at several positions (2B, 3B, even OF if he can).
  11. That's what I've been saying. I'm thinking 5/6 years, 10/11M per. But there's still the thing that both LA and NY teams have a SS (or 2 in case of the NY teams). The larger markets appear to be set at SS besides the Cubs. Still, I think Seattle, Washington and others will be players in the FA market this offseason.
  12. I'm sure Zambrano and Prior would love this approach. I'm sure they'd love getting more than 4 runs of offensive support a game more.
  13. Who cares about defense? This team is not losing because of defense. This ain't football. Defense doesn't win championships.
  14. If he accepts a 3-year deal at $8M per, he's almost a steal. I still think a 27-year old SS, leadoff hitter for a perennial playoff team, who has the best range and arm in baseball is gonna get more than 3-4 years and $8M. 30 year old, 7th hitters (although mistakenly hitting 2nd) coming off of down years got as much or more than that.
  15. That makes very little sense, though. Moving Nomar to 2B would make Nomar unnecessary. The Cubs don't need a 2Bman. They need a SS. If Nomar's not the Cubs SS, he has no business being on the team. 1. Nomar who's never played 2B would not be better defensively than Walker who's played there his whole life. 2. Nomar is injury prone. Walker has been on the DL, but nothing major. Walker is more likely to stay on the field. 3. Nomar is a FA, Walker is not, unless the Cubs decline his cheap option. 4. Nomar will likely cost at least twice as much as the 2.5 M the Cubs could play Walker.
  16. No votes for Gallagher either. Not even from Serena. I'm saddened by the results thus far, not that Murton doesn't deserve it.
  17. So, J....what are the tie breakers? Does head-to-head count before points? If so, am I still screwed? If I win this week (questionable) and next week, I will have the same record as HBC, but have swept him in the regular season. If Buddiga loses next week (assuming he holds his 30 pt lead this week), and the above happens, we have the same record. I split with him and am way down in points. So, am I eliminated anyway? Ah, it doesn't matter anyway. I'm probably going down this week.
  18. I can only think that the Soriano deal was really close before the deadline, but Texas wanted to try and make a run with him this year, and work something out in the offseason. They were only a few games out on July 31. Could also be why they didn't work anything out with the Twins, because they had a deal with the Cubs on the table. Still don't agree with it. Absolutely no reason for Walker NOT to be a Cub next year.
  19. Duke was scheduled to start tomorrow but was sent to the DL. Damn!
  20. No votes for Sing yet?
  21. Garrett Anderson is not a very good player. He's a good hitter, who got by because he could make contact with some power. Might as well hold on to Corey Patterson. He could easily be just as productive as Anderson has been the last couple years.
  22. Is today 8/8/88? The most anticipated game since then, and this happens. The Cubs are truly cursed. Go get em next time Jaxx!
  23. Ronnie went to auburn.. He plays for Miami, so I guess that counts. Yeah, that was the point. All have strong ties to the city of Miami, Florida.
  24. I'm gonna be very open to trading.
