Williams should be able to retire the bottom of the order. A 1-2-3 inning would be nice, because it would keep Ponson in for the 3rd time vs. the heart of the order.
Why wouldn't you want to put your best pitchers in there in the toughest situations? Just because it's early? Because it's early. Because they have appeared a combined 6 times in 4 games already. Because Ponson is a below average pitcher who the Cubs should be able to score against, again. Because, regardless of this being the Cardinals, this is not a big game, not big enough to throw a reliever for the 3rd straight day if you don't have to.
The only thing erratic about Wuertz is that he hasn't been used. He was the team's best reliever last season (outside of Dempster), and there was no need to waste your setup men (Williamson and Howry) who have pitched a lot in the 5th inning.
I think you leave him in there vs. Encarnacion, who hasn't hit anything all year. No way does Marshall face Pujols in that situation, either way. Give a groundball pitcher the chance to get a groundball. And I don't even mind putting Wuertz in. I'd rather throw him out there than to waste Williamson or Howry that early in the game.
Welcome to the organization, Mr. Ingram. What's your favorite sport to call? How much research do you have to put in to know the players and stats and such? How many Starting Lineup figurines do you have? Which one is your favorite?
Thanks for coming back to answer our questions, Adam. How do you feel about going back to West Tenn to play? What was the organization's reasoning for keeping you in AA, when you have clearly shown that you can play there and are pretty close to the majors? Also, did you have a chance to leave the organization for another team after being removed from the 40-man roster? If so, what made you stay with the Cubbies?
Thanks for fielding our questions, Coach Listach. As a (former) hitting coach, what types of things do you typically see in minor leaguers that cause them to slump? How hard is it to get a fairly established hitter (AAA tends to have older guys or guys close to the majors) to tweak something with his stance or timing?
Not only do I have a pitcher go on the DL after an inning of work, but I'm getting insult to my injury with the likes of Nick Johnson, Aaron Boone, Shannon Stewart, and Jose Reyes combining for about 8 HRs. That's about half of what they hit total last year.
I'm not Ron, but I can help you out a little, Craig. I actually had questions about Rapada, but you took them all. :D Rapada had very good velocity in Lansing a couple years back. Regularly threw 91-94 mph, kinda dropped down from the side. Very tough for lefties to pick up. His 2nd pitch was a solid slider (I believe). He was pretty raw when I saw him, and yeah he was 180 at best back in those days.
Felix Pie beat Albuquerque 4-1 today. LIX was 3-4, with a double. He scored 2 of the runs and knocked in the other two. Soto was also 3-4 with a pair of doubles and the other 2 runs scored. Sing and Theriot added a pair of hits. Valdez with 5 shutout innings. Novoa with a 2-inning save.
