  1. Right now, if the games mean anything, Cole Hamels and Johan Santana are slated to start the final game of their team's regular season next Sunday. The only way for them to truly mean anything is if the Brewers hang around in the wildcard. However, if the Brewers have clinched the WC by the final day, then the Phils/Mets could just be fighting it out for the NL East crown. In that case, it might hurt the Cubs. If the Brewers win the WC, that means the Cubs will face the Dodgers in the 1st round. Even if Santana and/or Hamels have to go the final Sunday of the season, they could pitch Game 3 for their team's in the NLDS. That would set them up perfectly for Game 1 of the NLCS, though against hte Cubs. So, my conclusions.... First, I have thought about playoff scenarios way too much. Secondly, the Cubs want the Phillies to run away with the division in the next few days. Then we want the Brewers tied with the Mets in the WC the final day of the season. Cubs then beat the Brewers and Santana takes the Mets into the playoffs going deep in the game on Sunday. Cubs face the Mets in the NLDS, with Santana only able to pitch once.
  2. Wow, sucks for McGowan. Steltz has a chance to play a bigger role now, though. Wasn't Danieal originally the starting nickelback? Why did he stop getting the PT there?
  3. Here's an interesting question. If the Cubs only take 10 pitchers for the NLDS, would anyone consider Koyie Hill for the 25-man roster? Sad as it is, Hank Blanco is the Cubs best RH hitter off the bench, if the Cubs face LH starter. (Cubs have the potential to face Hamels/Moyer, Santana/Perez 3 times combined in a 5-game series). Maybe sadder, I'd hate to not be able to PH Hank because there is no other catcher on the roster.
  4. I never cared less about a loss than I did yesterday. I care today. The only thing that can come close to clinching at home vs. the rival Brewers is clinching at home vs. the bigger rival, Cardinals.
  5. Seriously. Tickets are what, $0.75 there? Yeah, that'll get you a pair I think. This is why I can't wait for the Cubs to come to Oakland - cheap tickets. Reminds me of a joke I heard. Before Michael Jordan, you could get Bulls tickets at the gas station. It would be like "Can I get $20 on Pump 1, and 2 Bulls tickets?" The gas station attendant's response would be,. "Yeah, that'll be 22 dollars"
  6. Wow. What's amazing is the team directly behind the Cubs is a game away from the 2nd best record in the league. It's not like the NL or AL west divisions where everyone outside of 1st is under .500.
  7. when you get 1.5 more guys on base per game via the walk than you did 2 years ago, your offensive production is gonna go way up. lou has been an upgrade over dusty in just about every way imaginable, except for ability to fish and chew on toothpicks, while hendry has made much better personnel decisions over the past couple of years, but nothing is more important than this organization's epiphany that getting on base is a good thing. I think that can mostly be attributed to Lou and the coaching staff, though. Yeah, this is what I hoped for when Lou hired Gerald Perry as the hitting coach. Perry had a track record. I don't think it can be considered a coincedence by any means.
  8. Don't kid yourselves. Howry is a lock. He pitched him in the 7th of a 1-run game and has been for the majority of the year. He's a veteran w/ playoff experience. I won't make any predictions on his role, but he will be on the team. I think Marquis will be there too out of the pen, in case one of the starters gets absolutely bombed. And yeah, Pie is nowhere near a lock.
  9. I've seen this mentioned a few times now. I wonder if it really matters whether they start or not. Z, Harden, and Dempster have been around long enough for the Mets to know what to expect. With Z, probably not. On the other hand, the Mets roster has a combined 32 PA's against him, with only Delgado, Anderson, and Beltran having seen him for more than 3 PA's. Dempster is a very different pitcher this year in terms of stuff and in terms of what the batter sees with the glove flip. He didn't pitch against the Mets when they came to Wrigley. I just question how big of a difference actually facing a guy makes versus seeing enough evidence on tape to know what he throws, and being briefed by the hitting coach as to when he likes to throw it. It's not like teams go into games blindly; they know what to expect from the opposing pitcher. At least they should. Yeah, but it's one thing to know what's coming, and it's another to see what came and have that be pretty fresh in your memory. Watching tape for 2 days and getting 0 live ABs against him is different from getting 4 live ABs, watching tape of those ABs and then getting 4 more cracks at Z 5-6 days later.

I don't think it would be a big deal if they played the series right now. But being that they play next week, the Mets would see Z twice in less than a week. It's not like a football game where you can only use 1/2 of the playbook. If Z is going to pitch, he is going to throw all his pitches. I don't know that there is any advantage either way, but for the chance it is, I would hold Z back.
  11. With 1 more walk by Geovany Soto, the 2008 Cubs will have 6 players with over 60 walks on the season (including the entire IF, which has to be a first). In comparison, the Cubs only have two 60 walk seasons in the last 3, both Derrek Lee in 2005 and 2007. Nobody on the 06 Cubs walked more than Aramis Ramirez's 50! The Red Sox have not had 6 players over 60 walks in recent history. And we are talking about a team that had all 9 regulars with at least 47 walks in 05 and 07 (5 over 70 in 07). A really fast search shows that only the 05 Yankees recently, have had 6 players walk 60 times in the same season (Giambi, Arod, Sheff, Matsui, Posada, Jeter).
  12. Question for journalism majors. Why is that part in brackets? Whenever I see this in a quote, I assume that those are words the player didn't actually say, but implied. But if he doesn't say that part in the bracket, the sentence makes no sense.
  13. Phillies won. Lead the Mets and Brewers by 1/2 game.
  14. It's you. 2 ERs in his last 12 IP (3 in 13 now), with just 12 baserunners.
  15. Does Marmol stay in? I wouldn't leave him in, but Lou will.
  16. Nobody mention to Lou that Marmol is still young.
  17. Navarro with the walkoff, Tampa takes a 1-game lead over Boston!
  18. I don't know what's worst. Pitching Dempster when he was clearly tired last inning. Pitching Dempster when you need to be saving him for the playoffs. Or pitching Dempster when he has piled up a ton of innings for the first time in a real long time.
  19. Yeah, that's not good. Phillies just left them loaded, including the tying run at 3B.
  20. Mets lose 1-0, on a 4-hitter by the Nats!
  21. Eliminated from the division. Cubs magic number vs. Houston is 2.
  22. I don't like Dempster against the middle of this lineup again. Good time for Samardzija
