  1. unless he was being sarcastic, will carroll said yesterday on sports central that he thought it was a good move too. when the sox traded lee for scott p, most people thought that was a bust too but podsenik had a good year and helped the sox win the series. if erstad can stay healthy and put up #'s like he did in 2004, it will be a good deal for the sox.
  2. no problem. i actually found it on another cubs board and thought i would share it here for anyone interested. good luck to you when you do graduate.
  3. for those interested http://jobsearch.mlb.careers.monster.com/jobsearch.asp?col=dlt&sort=rv&vw=b&lid=28766&q=
  4. We really don't have any room in our pen... Fine then he becomes the right-handed platoon with Jacque Jones. jason bats from the left side.
  5. And I hope Hendry is right about Izturis. But, I'm very, very skeptical that Izturis will be any better with a bat than the worst SS's in the league. if he stays healthy & plays great defense, does it really matter what he hits? the sox & cards won the WS with guys who had .713 & .694 ops's respectively. Of course it matters. That black hole in the lineup has more of an impact than anything he does on defense, no matter how good his glove is. Those teams may have won with those shortstops, but it wasn't because of them. how many teams have won anything on the offense of their 8th place hitter?

  7. not only a taker, but one that was willing to give the cubs their best catching prospect for nefi. here is mlb.com's scounting report on chris robinson before he was drafted by the tigers: "Sturdy, durable catcher's body. Stocky, broad shoulders. Barrell chest, strong lower half. Great opposite field power. Line drive stroke. Excellent, vocal leader that takes charge of the pitching staff. Exceptional make-up."
  8. if they are talking about victor, they are correct. if they are talking about carlos, no way.
  9. where does ceda fit in all this? he's younger than jeff at 19, can hit 99 on the gun too and needs alot of work on his breaking & offspeed pitches.
  10. If memory serves, I seem to recall him saying he tried steroids very briefly and couldn't discern a real benefit from them. If you ever seen House in person, he's tiny, maybe 5'7"-5'8" on a good day, from what I recall he might've been one of the 1st to try steroids to add velo and that's probably the 1st time he realized that maintaining flexibility is more important than adding mass as it didn't add velo. He believes in nutritional supplements to help speed up the recovery time between outings. btw, according to this he's 5'11 and was 190 lbs when he played. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_House
  11. probably in the top 10. i'm not too sure about the lower levels but you would have to put veal, sean g, pawlek, guzman & marmol ahead of him along with perhaps marshall.
  12. there are about 7.25 million guarenteed reason why he changed his mind.
  13. I'm not getting this line of thinking. Samardzija has already signed a contract with the Cubs that will pay him something like $7.5M over the next few years if he simply shows up with his spikes and glove. Why would some new contract be needed if he's formally decided on baseball? i don't think that's true. Indeed it is http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/draft/news/261750.html from the 5th paragraph of the article: "Samardzija would receive $7.25 million if he makes baseball his primary sport." the announcement might then be that he has indeed chosen to play only baseball.

He believes in nutritional supplements to help speed up the recovery time between outings. size does not = velocity. flash gordon is 5'8 or so and gets it to 95. wagner is only 5'10 and hits 100+. steve dalkowski was around 5'8 and was arguably the hardest thrower ever.
  15. i would think that pagan will be ahead of ward when it comes to the OF. ward will primarialy be a pinch hitter and sub for lee at 1b and maybe play some lf.
  16. I don't believe it's reasonable to believe that a player will improve upon his past season minor league numbers in his first season of professional baseball. Pie's OPS by month: .862, .676, .630, .771, .930, 1.389 Well, if he goes .676 .630 in 2 consecutive months and the Cubs are losing ground, will Lou "let him play through it"? Don't get me wrong, I'm all for giving young guys their shot, but I don't think the timing is right this year. Juan Pierre's OPS by month: .622, .557, .733, .876, .770, .735 I can't speak directly for Sweet Lou, but the Cubs organization sure doesn't seem to take up issue with speedy left-handed CF's taking their time to start producing. are you talking about pie? if so, the guy is only 21 and was in aaa last year. how is that in any way "taking his time to start producing"?
  17. I'd like to hear Sandberg say what he thought of the Dusty era. I'm sure he wouldn't have too many nice things to say. Ken other than his players, who would have any nice things to say about the baker era? Darren. :D touche' NC. i forgot all about him.
  18. they also had him at .248 .295/.439 with 27 hr's for 2006. i think they were a little off.

  20. "The San Francisco Giants could be considering walking away from their one-year contract agreement with Barry Bonds that would pay him nearly $16 million for the 2007 season, according to published reports." link: http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/6381654
  21. i still think jones is going somewhere before spring training. dont the padres need an out fielder? or perhaps boston if they can unload nixon. how about jones for kottarras& pedroia?
  22. great news! i hope he see's the light and sticks with only baseball. it would be a big risk financially to try to play both sports. take the 7.25 mil and pitch for the cubs jeff!
  23. "The Cubs will increase their spring-training TV schedule to 10 games on Comcast SportsNet and four on WGN (Channel 9)" link: http://www.dailyherald.com/sports/cubs.asp?id=270664
  24. For us, we badly needed a left handed power hitter. We have exactly 0 people that can fill that roll on the major leage level. Our strength was our bullpen. Yes, we gave up a lot for him in Gonzo and Lillibridge. But, in the 'Pen we have Sol Torres who can close, and John Grabow and Matt Capps who will set up. That set up will get us wins most of the time we head into the 7th leading. Oh yeah - Can't forget Damaso Marte. That's not a bad foursome. The real pain for us was in giving up Lillibridge. Lot of potential in that guy. We got a guy who's an excellent defender and was 10th in the NL in OPS last season, for a reliever. I don't want to make lite of Gonao at all - big shoes to fill. But, if we can't take the lead in the first place, there's nothing to save. Check out: http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/07018/754774-63.stm Our lineup now looks like: Duffy, Wilson, Freddy, LaRoche, Bay, Nady, Paulino, Castillo. Bautista will push Castillo for playing time. I like our team a lot more today than I did yesterday. A Lot more. If this team doesn't win more than it loses, Tracey should be fired. the lineup does look pretty good and the pen isnt too bad even without gonzo but what about starting pitching?
  25. http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/cubs/215466,CST-SPT-ryno18.article hopefully some of his magic will rub off on a few of the prospects. regardless of his managing skills, it sure sounds like fundamentals will be stressed in peoria while he is there.
