The way ND is played that first half I agree with you. Many, many teams would work them. The have looked very flat in the beginning of the last three games. And that didn't help anything at all (kickoff return) :x

I think USC could. Their one loss would be to UCLA, a top 25 team, wheras Oregon, PSU, etc.'s losses were to "lesser" teams. Plus the media has had Texas and USC in the Rose Bowl since August. It would be bad for business if that didn't happen :roll: Oregon lost to USC.

Does anyone think it is possible that either USC or Texas loses and still stays in the Rose Bowl. It was discussed on ESPN Radio yesterday and all the "experts" said that even if they lose they will still go to the Rose Bowl. NewUser, I agree with you about Colorado. That program has taken a nose dive, and the fans are doing nothing to help fix the image. It kind of reminds me of Miami under Johnson and Erickson.

However more goes into the decision to not join the Big 10 than just football. That was the point I was trying to make. In 98-99 ND may have joined the Big 10 when it was offered (I thought they would), but things other than football came into the picture.

Joe Pa and the AD for Syracuse got into a little thing let's say about forming an all sports Eastern league in the 70's. For some stupid reason it wasn't formed and the Big East as a basketball only conference was then formed. After the Big East was formed they would not let Penn State in and I'm not exactly sure the reason why. Penn State then wanted to schedule the eastern teams Syracuse, WV, and BC in 2 for 1's because of the loss of revenue...twice at Penn State and then once at the other school field for football and it was turned down by those schools. Penn State then was either asked or or was asked by the Big 10 to join and there they are. Miami wanted to improve it's basketball and joining the Big East was a no brainer for them. I believe around the same time Florida State joined the ACC. Is that why JoePa was so critical of Pitt when they joined the Big East. IIRC that is when he refused to play them anymore, but I could be wrong.

Does anyone know the chance of Indy ever getting a team? I am moving there in a few weeks and would love to see a MLB team go there. I heard it mentioned once or twice in reference to the Expos but no one really discussed it in depth. I think the Indians do well there, but am curious about the feasiblity of an MLB team.

Contrary to popular myth a Hokie is not an animal. It is part of an old cheer that evolved into the team name. I may be wrong on this but their techinical nickname was somthing like the figthing turkeys or fighting gobblers, but the students used Hokie because, well, their nickname sucked. Anyway in the 80s Hokie became the official name, but the turkey mascot stayed. Two of my best friends are VT alum, and that is where I got this from. I think I got the story right. God know I have heard it enough. They get real defensive over people calling a Hokie a turkey for some reason.

Regarding academics that is one of the reasons ND will never join. The Big 10 often does joint research, and with the religious nature of ND's research it would either a) limit their ability to do what they want with research b) involve the other schools in research they are not interested in doing. This was one of the main reasons given by the University a few years ago when the Big 10 invited ND. That plus the alumni funding. Since ND is funded mainly by the alumni the school often makes efforts to schedule games where a large fan base can see them play. A conference affiliation would take away from that ability. Those are just two of many reasons, but they are largely non-football, so I thought I would throw them out there. Just a tidbit of interesting info. Many, many, many years ago ND attempted to join the Big 10, but was denied in large due to Fielding Yost and his hatred for ND. There's one reason---and one reason only---that Notre Dame does not join the Big Ten: NBC TV money. Well that's no secret. Don't have to split their bowl revenue 12 ways either (though when 6 or 7 Big Ten teams make it to bowls, everyone does alright in the end) But ND did take a huge hit on the bowl revenue with the new BCS contract in effect after this year. Most reasons due center around the fact that they simply don't need to join a conference. I am not too sure about PSU or Miami when they joined, but I don't really think they did either. Does anyone know why they did join thei Big 10/East? Anyway I was trying to provide some reasons that are not football related, since there is more than FB to ND :D
