Does anyone care about the Bulls season enough to discuss?

I haven't watched any of the recent games, but it looks like Ayo has been absolutely killing it for the Bulls. 23 points and 10 assists tonight. What a steal. Not only getting him in the second round, but then locking him up for 3 more years on a VERY team friendly contract. -
I mean, sure, we know the Ricketts family can afford it. But also, let's not pretend like adding $31M over the luxury tax is nothing. It's only one or two years, but factor in the tax and the Cubs would probably be paying him close to $50M a year (and I don't think Snell is worth that).

That's a high AAV for Snell, but likely not a great deal for him. He gets a large guarantee for 1-2 years, but he needs to continue performing at a very high level to earn another big contract after this one. Boras lost this one even moreso than the Bellinger deal.

None of it makes any sense really. You have a team in Iowa St. That most experts had as a borderline #1 seed, if not a 1, and they get put in the same region as the #1 overall seed?

It is going to be quite a stunner when the Bears bypass Caleb Williams to draft MHJ, declaring Tyson Bagent their new franchise QB.

I don't think there's any shot at a 2. They needed to beat Purdue last week to have a realistic chance at that.

He missed some good looks. There weren't a lot of bad forced shots that I recall. Illinois just got a bit lucky that he wasn't on his game today, and that Rienk Mast came back to reality after his hot start.

I didn't expect to get a lot for Fields, but a 6th round pick, and not even this year... that is surprising. But hopefully Fields plays quite a bit for Pittsburgh and plays well. I want him to succeed, and having the pick upgraded to a 4th would be a nice bonus.

Tominaga is really fun to watch. That first half tonight against Indiana was unbelievable. You can't let that guy get a shot off from anywhere.

I would say there probably is an explanation for those "50/50" balls so often going to the opponents. I don't think it is a question of effort, but it could be related to positioning. Maybe all the switching on defense leads to guys being out of position and crashing to the boards when the shot goes up, leaving players on the opposing team open for those loose ball opportunities. If it seems like the other team is always in the right place at the right time, there could very well be a reason for that.

He had one of his worst performances of the year for sure. His outside shot is really off and on though. He will hit some shots and then throw up some absolute bricks. The difference in this game was he just wasn't able to get to the basket. The announcers touched on it, but he wasn't able to get his usual fast break opportunities.

The Cubs have about 8 better SP options, so there is no reason for Smyly to even be in consideration for a spot. It's bullpen or nothing for him. I'm fine giving him a shot as the lefty bullpen guy, but hopefully he has a short leash.

During spring training, absolutely. There is nothing to be learned by watching Ian Happ or Patrick Wisdom take exhibition at bats, but it is fun to watch the lesser known quantities to see how they perform against Major League caliber pitching.

Unlikely as it may be, if Mervis gets dealt for scraps and hits 30 home runs somewhere else, that is going to be annoying.

The Cubs certainly have a type. They are going to corner the market on journeyman 1B/DH options.

That was a hell of a highlight package put together by the Blackhawks for Chris Chelios. Whoever worked on that absolutely hit it out of the park. -
I agree as things stand right now, but it will really depend on what happens the next few years. If Bellinger plays well and opts out into another big contract, this may very well end up being the best possible thing for him (and Boras will spin it as such). If he regresses and misses his one prime opportunity for a long term deal, then it will be a huge loss for him. A minor loss for the Cubs, but a huge loss for Cody/Boras. This deal is high risk for Cody and relatively low risk for the Cubs. Ultimately though, I think both sides would be thrilled if Bellinger has a great season and opts out after the first year.

Do we know if Bellinger got a NTC? I would assume that to be the case, but haven't seen it reported.

I don't get this sort of speculation that implies that the luxury tax is completely off limits. Who really cares if the Cubs are $1M under or $5M over? The difference to ownership is negligible and they are likely going to be able to reset next year anyway, so it doesn't make any sense for them to hamstring themselves now for fear of going $1 over. Obviously no owner WANTS to pay the luxury tax, but that's where we are. Bruce Levine made a comment on the radio this morning about the Cubs being done, immediately shooting down the idea of any more possible signings because they are "in the luxury tax". That just doesn't make sense. If you're going to go into the tax, you don't just stop immediately upon crossing the threshold. If there are guys who can help the team this year while still leaving some flexibility for midseason additions, those opportunities should absolutely be explored.
