  1. Well the second two wanted to stay with Cal who is still a WWW guy. Henry was encouraged by Pastner to go to Kansas. That makes sense. Coaches usually try to encourage their best player to play for another team.
  2. That's dumb. WWW is associated with Cal not Pastner. If WWW had any links to Pastner and the Memphis staff, Xavier Henry, John Wall, and Demarcus Cousins would still be Tigers.
  3. I think it may be more the power of WWW and Fed Ex. Does Pastner have a relationship with WWW? Either way, Cal recruited much better with Pastner there. Dude's unbelievable at getting talent. It will be interesting to see how he coaches them. Yes he does. I've never seen anything linking Pastner and WWW.
  4. 5 star recruit Tarik Black just committed to Memphis. That's 4 five star players in this recruiting class. Not to mention a 4 star and 2 three stars. Unbelievable what Josh Pastner is doing.
  5. Memphis getting a commitment from Hippolyte Tsafack was nice. Josh Pastner already has a really good class for 2010. We're another 4 star player away form possibly a number 1 ranked class.
  6. Is this an actual rumor? Alex (Chicago) Marlon Byrd to the Cubs? I hope this happens and it would make sense since it would allow Fukudome to move back to his natural position. Do you think there is a chance this could happen? Jayson Stark (1:39 PM) I think Marlon Byrd is going to be one of the most attractive under-the-radar free agents out there. And the Cubs make sense. They're definitley in the market for a righthanded-hitting outfielder who can play center and allow them to move Fukudome back to right. And the list of free agents who can do that is awfully short.
  7. Looks like the Grizzlies/Iverson honeymoon is over before it began. When asked how his leg felt after logging 18 minutes, Iverson responded with a favorable medical assessment before opening up about his role. “I had no problems (with the hamstring). I had a problem with my butt sitting on that bench for so long,” Iverson said. When a reporter suggested that the Grizzlies’ youthful and offensively challenged bench desperately needs Iverson’s scoring punch, the 34-year-old shook his head in disagreement. “No. I’m not a bench player. I’m not a sixth man,” Iverson said. “Look at my resume and that’ll show I’m not a sixth man. I don’t think it has anything to do with me being selfish. It’s just who I am. I don’t want to change what gave me all the success that I’ve had since I’ve been in this league. I’m not a sixth man. And that’s that.”
  8. There's a chance at this point. 2009 Fuld OPS: .739 2009 Sori OPS: .732 Fuld last 2 weeks OPS: .458 Sori last 2 weeks OPS: .921 Defense certainly plays a part and widens the gap in favor of Fuld, but offensively Soriano has been comparable, at least. Problem is, your 18 million dollar superstar shouldnt be comparable to a 28 year old AAAA player. I understand the knee issue, but I dont know why they arent shutting him down. we have 5 more years of him, so they should want him as healthy as possible, not limping around the bases and the outfield. Maybe it has to do with Soriano not wanting to shut it down? That shouldnt be his decison. Sure it should. You don't just make a player sit out the last month of the season. Especially a productive player with five years left on his contract.
  9. Why are people so concerned with Jackson's strikeouts? He's taking walks and hitting for decent power. Why are the K's such a concern? Are K's worse in the minors than they are in the majors?
  10. Speaking of Dusty. A Red's friend of mine called me a second ago saying Dusty just sent Homer Baily out for the 7th with his pitch count at 109.
  11. That's my opinion as well. I've never understood the lack of hustle complaint about him.
  12. Yea of course. And its just a coincidence that they were on vacation to Detroit(since when is this a vacation spot?) where worldwide Wes is from. Completely coincidence. Is it really hard to believe that a kid from Chicago would travel to Detroit to watch a Detroit/Chicago playoff game? You have to register for the SAT's a month before the test. He wouldn't have known that there was going to be a playoff game there when he picked his site for the test. Even if he was able to change his site last minute (which I really don't think you can do)..do you really think he would take the time to change the site and make it a bad environment for trying to concentrate on the test that he badly needed just to go watch a playoff game? That's rather far-fetched. I agree. And I'm not sure how I started defending Rose in this thread? I would not be surprsied at all if he didn't take the test. I just have issue with the NCAA clearing him to play and then unclearing him after the season then punishing the University.
  13. His OPS+ is -34 in the second half.
  15. Well when you have less than a month to go before you enroll at college you probably take the test whenever you have an available day. There's no proof he didn't take the test.
  16. Bit my tongue clear off here. Whether a school is willfully ignorant while a student is enrolled at the school, or willfully ignorant in order to get him enrolled at the school, it really doesn't matter. This wasn't Rose taking the test once, not getting his scores, realizing he needs to get his act together to be eligible and that's it. This was Rose failing to reach the scores 3 times. This was Rose then travelling to Detroit(home of friend of the program worldwide wes) to take the SAT. You don't think Calipari knew exactly what was going on? He just thought Derrick would be more comfortable taking the test in Detroit? Away from all the pressure of Chicago? He just thought Derrick flipped the switch the 4th time around, and took the test seriously? You think Memphis's compliance department saw this as standard operating procedure? Detroit's where most kids go to get a boost in their scores? With Calipari's history, Memphis held their nose and said let's go for it. It bit them in the ass and now they're pleading ignorance. If they weren't willfully ignorant, then they were accidentally stupid. Rose and his family were in Detroit on vacation attending the Bulls/Pistons playoff game. This was discovered duing his initial eligibility process.
  17. BTW, it's my understanding that the NCAA has yet to find any proof that Rose did not take his SAT. This whole thing started because the Educational Testing Service cancelled Rose's SAT score. The ETS cancelled Rose's test score not because they found proof that he didn't take the test. They cancelled it because they sent letters to Rose's home in Chicago questioning his test scores and he never responded. The ETS stated "failure to cooperate" in why the scores were cancelled. Also the test was cancelled deeming Rose ineligible after the season was completed. There's not much linking the University of Memphis or Calipari for that matter to any wrong doing.
  18. I think he's perfect for the super-sup role. The fact that he can catch even opens up the possibilty of maybe pinch hitting/running for Koyie Hill late in games.
  19. This assumes that Rose acted completely on his own in getting someone to take the SAT for him. More likely, Calipari at best knew about it and at the worst orchestrated it. The point still remains that the NCAA cleared him to play for Memphis. What is Memphis supposed to do? Hold it's own investigation into whether he actually took the SAT on his own?
  20. I would have agreed if it weren't for their Fed Ex connection which has helped deliver a ton of money and great facilities. I think Pastner will keep them about as relevant as Gonzaga. They'll fly around to play tough teams in the non-conference, clean up in conference and have a handful of Sweet 16's. The question is how much of Memphis's success was their facilities and how much was their skirting of the rules. There's no big name coach to save them anymore, Memphis continues what they've been doing they're [expletive]. The facilities are top notch and money coming into the program will never be a problem. If Memphis can survive this next season and then sign a couple of the big time recruits who have Memphis listed as their top choices, I don't think you'll see much of a dropoff.
  21. I kinda agree with this. I really don't get the difference between this and the Darrell Arthur spot. Did the NCAA prove Memphis knew about the SAT? Cause in both cases it seems like the NCAA Clearinghouse approved the kids? I'm not going to act like Cal was running a completely clean program because that's likely not the case. But this whole Rose thing is pretty ridiculous. I don't know what else Memphis or any program is supposed to do. The guy was cleared by the NCAA clearinghouse. Are programs now supposed to dig deeper to clear players on their own?
  22. I completely disagree here. I believe we need to rely on the minor league system for depth, rather than spending a lot of money on reserve players. As we have seen this year, our cheap minor leaguers have been as good or better than any of our veteran reserves. Even with injuries, depth hasn't been the problem this year. The problem is the bullpen and lack of competent starters at C, 2B, and LF. You guys do realize we were TIED FOR FIRST PLACE on August 6th. They weathered the ARAM storm fairly well. It's been the complete implosion the last 2 weeks due to a bad bullpen, terrible RISP hitting, and below average starting pitching, partly due to losing Z and Lilly. What point are you trying to make? What does being tied for first on August 6th have to do with anything? Bad bulpens tend to get exposed at some point. Lack of depth definitely hurt this team with having no backup for our most oft-injured and best player.
  23. Right after he bolts for UCLA/UNC. You told me Kentucky was his dream job. it wasn't about money. That was before the allegations came out. But he did take less money to go to Kentucky.
  24. Right after he bolts for UCLA/UNC.
