    He was hired to manage the club during the regular season. He hasn't done that yet. Early returns have been relatively positive, but he hasn't actually done what he was hired to yet. You just can't grade him.

    Looks like Cotts and Wood right now. Cotts still has 2 option years, I believe, and Wood may be getting primed for a quick DL stint with this triceps strain. Seriously? Wood's triceps strain is that bad? I hadn't heard anything about this...geez. I don't really think it's that bad, but it wouldn't surprise me to see the Cubs hold him on the DL for a few weeks to relieve any media pressure on him, not to mention give them a bit more time to shop an extra reliever + jacque jones around for something.

    I agree. We have a manager who will play the best performing player. Not the one with the better past, etc. We have a manager who has been saying lately that he will play the best performing player, in stark contrast to his actions on the last team he managed. Let's save the absolute comments until we've actually seen him work during the season. I like what he's said just as much as anybody here, but he's yet to follow through on any of that (through no fault of his own, granted). Let's remember to not get too worked up over a couple of sound-bytes, alright? YES SIR!!! Sarcasm duly noted. I just find the disconnect between his old ways and his new soundbytes troubling... especially so when he is leaning towards Miller as the last man in the rotation and the historically pathetic Tomas Perez seems to be grabbing that 25th man spot. If wearing rose-coloured glasses makes your time with the Cubs more palatable, go for it. Forgive me for trying to keep everybody's expectations where they should be, though. I always enjoy my season more when unexpected good things happen, rather than expecting too much and not coming close.

    2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K since his return from the injury. Very good strikeout/walk ratio and K/9 innings. :D I like the move.. But I would've preferred a couple more appearances before they decided it for sure. Look at his last three years. I think that should count for more than another handful of ST appearances.

    This is fantastic news. With the way Wuertz had been jerked around the last few years, plus his recent injury, I was worried he wouldn't be guaranteed a spot on the roster... while worse bets like Eyre and Dempster would get spots just because of what they're getting paid.

    You've said this before, and it's simply not true. Davenport adjusts for league difficulty and park effects. Feel free to provide examples. That's the problem with your argument. There's over a hundred guys who were rookies last year. You can find examples on both sides. I'm talking across the board. You really think I can't find some examples of where PECOTA was way wrong on a rookie? And I'm not talking about park effects or league difficulty. The league diffculty you're talking about, I believe, is West to Central, AL to NL. Not AAA to MLB. Take Pie for example. If he does another year in AAA, he's likely to hit the line that was quoted earlier. It's not reasonable to expect him to do as well in MLB as he would do if he did another year in AAA. If you want to write up a list of who all broke their rookie eligibility last year, I'll post what PECOTA projected for them last season (assuming they are in the book, naturally).

    BP 2006 projected a .274/.320/.387 line for Cedeno and had this to say. "As a shortstop, there's little he can't do: his tremendous arm conjures up memories of Shawon Dunston, but cedeno has softer hands and better range. Whether or not he'll become a better hitter is the question. He has a nice, even swing, but he's easily overpowered, and has no notion of working the count. Promoted aggressively throughout his career, he could struggle for a year or two before settling in as a genuinely useful hitter in the big leagues. He's penciled in as the Opening Day shortstop, but it remains to be seen if the Cubs can show some patience and let him grow up in the big leagues, or if they'll get frustrated and turn to Neifi Perez."

    Sounds good to me! According to my BP book "Baseball Between the Numbers" bunting for one run is actually more valuable when you have a lead, so, not really a bad decision there. The idea that he's going to be aggressive on the basepaths worries me though. Stealing in general isn't really a positive play to make. If I remember correctly, in that book they had a list of how efficient a manager is, and Lou was close to the top of the list. I think that was in "The Book on The Book." And yeah, he was pretty successful on his stuff except for sac bunts.

    big 10 is good :wink: Don't get too comfortable. Illinois is playing horrible, but lucky. VT just missed the three that would have put them just five out, and Washington got called for a technical that was baloney. Randall just airballed a free throw and bricked the second off the back of the rim.
