  1. No, I like this board and its quick on getting news and rumors. But some of these opinions that I've come across today are ridiculous. Yeah I know. That one guy who said that batting average meant as much as home runs was really out there. What'd you think about him? I love him. He made my life worth living.
  2. LOVE THIS. If you guys were smart you would read it more carefully where I put "since it shows what kind of player they are." HR's and SB's are comparable depending on the player. For instance Greene is a power hitter thus he hit around 28 HR's and had around 4 stolen bases. Theriot is a speedy guy meaning he hit around 4 HR's and has about 28 SB's. See how they are comparable. I'm not saying I would take 28 SB's over 28 HR's, but im saying thats the type of player they are. Greene has a good amount of HR's for the type of hitter he his, and Theriot has a good amount of SB's for the type of player he is. Why is it ok to say that HR's and SLG matter but OBP and SB's dont??? Who the f*ck decides that that is more important in baseball? I completely disagree. I think OBP is just as important as stuff like SLG. I think batting average is just as important as stuff like HR's. It's ridiculous to say it is not! Thank you for my new sig.
  3. The idea isn't to keep those four. The idea is to use those four in a trade that would be more of an upgrade than from Lofton "up" to Figgins... Theriot up to any real shortstop is a much larger improvement than Figgins would be over Lofton, if he is one at all.
  4. I don't watch the games. I just wait for the spreadsheets to update. I really hate stealing that quote from GRB, but I love it.
  5. Lofton: 2005 - .335/.392/.420 2006 - .301/.360/.403 2007 - .296/.367/.414 Figgins: 2005 - .290/.352/.397 2006 - .267/.336/.376 2007 - .330/.393/.432 Lofton has been better than Figgins in almost every season except the last one, where Figgins managed to hit nearly 40 points higher than his career average based on a small sample size fluke due to missing a good chunk of the year. At age 29, Figgins isn't just hitting his stride, he's about to start his decline because his speed is gonna start to slip. Besides, he's still only under control for two years anyways. And despite what you think of Murton, Cedeno, Veal, and the rest, we would be much better served to go after an upgrade where it's not really up for debate if he's better than a cheap one-year stopgap. Shouldn't we be using those people where it can make the biggest difference to our team? Getting a real shortstop would help this team more than getting what (if you are correct) would be a marginal upgrade over a freely available centerfield option... and it wouldn't stop us from acquiring that centerfield option. Getting Figgins would stop us from making a deal that could help a lot more.
  6. Don't trade off our assets for Figgins to play in CF. Just sign Lofton.
  7. Figgins is EXACTLY what the Cubs need. A fast guy who can play CF and hit over .300. We dont have any of those guys. Theriot cant bat near that. Neither can Pie. We need guys just like Figgins and Roberts, so why not get both? 1) Brian Roberts 2B 2) Chone Figgins CF 3) Derrek Lee 1B 4) Aramis Ramirez 3B 5) Alfonso Soriano LF 6) Kosuke Fukudome RF 7) Geovany Soto C 8) Ryan Theriot SS/Mark DeRosa SS Ridiculous! But not happening. We just dont match up well with the Angels. They need a SS. or 3B Smart teams don't trade off their assets for Chone Figgins to play CF when Kenny Lofton is a free agent.
  8. Gallagher, Colvin, EPatt to Baltimore for Roberts. Murton, Pie, Cedeno to San Diego for Greene. Sign Lofton. LF - Soriano 2B - Roberts 1B - Lee 3B - Ramirez RF - Fukudome SS - Greene CF - Lofton C - Soto I could certainly live with something like that.
  9. Theriot is not impatient. He just isnt a good hitter yet. It is not impatient when you take the first pitch down the middle, take the 2nd pitch down the middle, then are forced to hit the 3rd pitch down the middle or you'd strike out. They know he is not a power threat so they give him lots of pitches to hit, but if you have 2 strikes you need to swing at the 3rd one. How many times are you going to have to change your argument before you realize that it's a flawed premise to begin with?
  10. Maybe they'll finally vote for the Cubs. You underestimate the shady tactics of those who count the votes... [-X That's just a sign you aren't playing dirty enough to inspire their fear. You can't beat people who cheat by doing a shoddy job of it yourself. You have to stoop to the level that they'd have to question their humanity in order to continue on. Try abducting their pets. If they push the issue, send back the tail. They'll fold.
  11. Striking out is guaranteed to take at least 3 pitches, which forces teams to go to their bullpens faster than if guys like Ryan Theriot run up there and ground out on the first pitch constantly. Couple that with the fact that Greene is likely to have a slightly higher OBP after getting out of PETCO, and a much higher slugging percentage, all while showing off some actual defensive prowess (while Theriot has none at all)... it's not even a question.
  12. And how about that hitter? He's sitting there at the plate, watching the pitcher throw to first base over and over and over again. He gets impatient, and he flails away at junk. Or maybe he's preoccupied with making sure that runner gets a good jump, and so he takes a strike or two when it looks like the runner is going. At the end of the day, the distraction to the hitter is approximately equal to the distraction of the pitcher and the displacement of the defense. Nobody is arguing that it doesn't affect these players. The argument is that the outcome is not affected.
  13. I pulled out MLB2k7 last night, and he's only ranked an 82. I really don't know why we're trying to trade for an 82.
  14. Talking to the press about a player not on your team is tampering, as would be talking directly to that player (without his parent club's approval)
  15. He could probably use another full year. But after that, Yadier should be a part-time player if TLR knew what he was doing. Lol, say what you want about Tony, but he is the 3rd winningest manager of all-time. Probably knows what he wants to do and why. Whether or not it is right is up for debate. Bryan Anderson needs two more years before he is ready to play everyday at the ML level. The inventor of the modern closer gets no credit for his ability to manage. Let's just say that he knows how to pick out talented teams. And Anderson does need two full years, but that's just to be ML ready, it could take significantly less than that to be better than Yadier.
  16. Really interesting question... I'd have to get the opinion of a bunch of people smarter than me about when Lincecum's and Cain's arms might be subject to falling off. Some scouts think Lincecum is a walking time bomb. Some think he can throw like that forever. Cain worries me a bit more, simply because he looks like a workhorse, so he's been treated like one. Still, he's not in any imminent danger for this season. Either way, with a rotation that sick, we'd be in pretty good shape. I don't care if we have to sign Pedro Feliz to play third... Wouldn't be a bad idea, his defense is really really good. I'm really not too concerned with our defense right now... Theriot is the only below average defensive player starting for us, and DeRosa is probably the only one that comes in right at average. We probably have the best defensive outfield in the league, Soto has an excellent reputation, and DLee is about as good a first baseman as there is. And Aramis has come around on his defense by quite a bit. He was well above average last year. Still, replace Aramis with Feliz, and with our starting staff consisting of Cain, Lincecum, Z, Hill, and Lilly... We'd probably have the best run prevention in the league. We certainly wouldn't need to score many runs to win most days.

  18. Yes, its official, Sabean is the worst GM in the history of baseball. I haven't looked at any stats but wouldn't Cain pretty much be the number 2 if not 1 in Chicago (depending on which Buerhle shows up)? I don't see back of the rotation with the pitchers they have. I could be wrong though.. At this rate, we could get Cain and Lincecum for Aramis. Would anyone do that if Aramis waived his no trade clause? In a heartbeat. It doesn't even really matter who we get to replace Aramis, either.

  20. And in today's "small sample size spectacular!"... Since last Wednesday, Ronny is batting .384/.467/.692 with 4 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 BB, and 3 K
  21. Probably because there's nothing else to discuss in here.
  22. A better question is, how many members don't remember if they have or have not have posted in this thread. Or how many new members have been added SINCE this thread was started..haha. I'm pretty sure I have.
  23. I'm sure pitchers are hurt by it. Hitters are hurt by it just as much. (The bad hitters get impatient and flail away at anything near the zone when the pitcher finally throws one across in between pickoff attempts. The good hitters take strikes.) In the end, it breaks even.
  24. I laughed aloud when I saw this. If we're unlucky, they get a .260 EqA hitter who convinces teams not to run (where they would usually hurt themselves anyways), and is horrible on the rest of defense. It's actually fairly similar to the thought of us extending Theriot for that contract. The service time is a bit off, but still... it's not exactly a move that's likely to make other teams afraid.
