    That's certainly possible. But somebody should have been. Why? He's a platoon player with chronic back problems who isn't very good defensively anymore. Didn't say teams should be falling over themselves to acquire him. But he's a nice complementary piece. Hits lefties well and is fine defensively in the corners as well as able to handle CF (though to what degree is debatable).

    In fairness to Hendry, this deadline doesn't mean all that much. The guys we all wanted moved are almost all paid enough money that nobody is going to just claim them on waivers... and if they do, that's probably a better deal than we would have gotten anyways. About the only guy we should have traded but may have trouble doing so now is Reed Johnson. That said, I'm very disappointed at our inactivity... and as much as I like Carlos Pena, he better not be our plan at 1B going forward.

    The average major league 2B this season has hit .255/.316/.379 Barney is at .300/.328/.369 In other words, because of Barney's lack of plate discipline and power, he's only managed to be an average 2B despite his .300 batting average. So yeah, it's possible to be a productive ML player... but you aren't going to find many stars without real secondary skills.

    I absolutely refuse to label Samardzija as a bust until he's out of our system entirely... the way his peripherals absolutely refuse to stabilize from year to year, I wouldn't be any more shocked to see a K/9 of 13 next year with a BB/9 of 4, or the complete opposite. WILD CARD!

    Castro would probably fit the bill. Of course, his development is almost the very definition of "special circumstances."

    Pretty much. The Cubs will be garbage for at least most of the next decade if they go that route. Really doesn't jive with how savvy the Ricketts are as businessmen/women. If Ricketts really wants Joe Cowleys prophecy to come true and have Chicago become the White Sox town, then he should definitely go this route. Nah, they're pretty screwed, too. Especially if Kenny is left in charge. I don't understand why people think Crane Kenney is doing a bad job. He's not here to be the baseball guy. He's basically head of marketing.

    FWIW, I care less now about managers who love bunting, stealing, hit and runs, etc... than I did a few years ago. They're not as bad tactically in this lower offensive environment. That said, Bob makes me roll my eyes plenty when he acts when Soriano and Aramis are the problem spots on this team.

    With the exception of this year, I have hated each and every Wilken draft... at least on draft day. A couple years later, they generally look a whole lot better... to the point that even I have to concede that he's probably an above average scouting director. Unless we're bringing in a particularly talented guy like Logan White to take over, I don't see a good reason to be rid of Wilken. Fleita on the other hand... I'm sad to say it since he does seem like a genuinely nice person, but it's time for him to go.

    I think some people need to let go of the disappointment of him being the #3 overall pick and just look at what he is. He's a young guy in an advanced league who is playing at an above-average level while showcasing an ability to put the ball in play. Does he have holes in his game? Yeah, but he seems pretty likely to reach the majors and provide at least some value for us. Bust as the #3 pick? Probably. Bust as a prospect? Certainly not yet.

    That's a bit of a misrepresentation. People wanted him, but that was when they thought he'd be cheap and come on a one year deal. He was neither.

    the tough part about projecting him is that he was so abysmal with the bat the last 3 years. he hit well in 2007 but the last 3 years posted an OPS of .632, .596 and .628. now all of a sudden he's got an OPS over .800? He's younger than Soto was when he exploded out of nowhere. Catchers have a tendency to be late bloomers. That said, Gonzalez has caught my attention somewhat. That BABIP is unsustainable, but there seems to be some real progress. Between that and his age... He's pretty likely to end up a major leaguer. But I need to see more progress than he's shown so far before I'll see him as anything more than a marginal guy.

    Guessing "jobe" and autocorrect. As to the argument itself, while there's plenty of cause to fire Hendry that doesn't mean that the best opportunity to do so is right now. Patience is a virtue.

    While nobody in their right mind really picked the Cubs to contend, I don't think it's too outrageous to use injuries as an excuse for this team to be a borderline .500 team. The #4 & #5 starters are something like 8-24 since Wells and Cashner went down. And I'm still not willing to say Wells is healthy, given the way he pitched in his rehab starts and since he came back.
