  1. I'll definitely take it. Anybody know anything more about Marcano?
  2. the tough part about projecting him is that he was so abysmal with the bat the last 3 years. he hit well in 2007 but the last 3 years posted an OPS of .632, .596 and .628. now all of a sudden he's got an OPS over .800? He's younger than Soto was when he exploded out of nowhere. Catchers have a tendency to be late bloomers. That said, Gonzalez has caught my attention somewhat. That BABIP is unsustainable, but there seems to be some real progress. Between that and his age... He's pretty likely to end up a major leaguer. But I need to see more progress than he's shown so far before I'll see him as anything more than a marginal guy.
  3. Guessing "jobe" and autocorrect. As to the argument itself, while there's plenty of cause to fire Hendry that doesn't mean that the best opportunity to do so is right now. Patience is a virtue.
  4. While nobody in their right mind really picked the Cubs to contend, I don't think it's too outrageous to use injuries as an excuse for this team to be a borderline .500 team. The #4 & #5 starters are something like 8-24 since Wells and Cashner went down. And I'm still not willing to say Wells is healthy, given the way he pitched in his rehab starts and since he came back.
  5. Malave and Acosta would be a pretty nice haul.
  6. Also from Ben Badler:
  7. That would be an awful, awful deal. I'm glad it's pretty obviously a fabrication.

  9. It's worth nothing that in his initial contract with the Cubs, Shawon Sr. had a clause in there that would require the Cubs to pay his tuition should he decide to return to school after his playing days.
  10. Actually, it wouldn't be the worst idea in the world for a few teams to pull a minor trade for Reed around the deadline. He's a useful enough lefty masher. I wouldn't expect much for him, but a toolsy young guy with a bad early track record in the low minors isn't a bad return.
  11. Reed: fielding percentage - 1.000 in 35 games; UZR - -5.4 Soriano: fielding percentage - .961 games; UZR - 2.3 Fielding percentage prefers Reed, but Sori has been a much better defender this year according to UZR. UZR does take into account Soriano's arm... which adds a lot more value to Soriano's D out there than people seem to give him credit for.
  12. Lovely. He was hit in the head. While that's not good news, judging from the fact he isn't laying on his back clutching at his face or anything he's probably not hurt too bad. My first thought was a broken wrist or something...
  13. Rohan isn't a prospect. He's always been old for his leagues and never really has produced. Even this year, his "breakout" is mostly what looks to be a BABIP in the .370 range. I'm confused a bit by the Bour example too. Rebel Ridling has been playing most of the 1B for the Smokies but he's not really a bonus baby. Are you complaining that Vitters (23 games played at 1B) is blocking Bour's progress? Vitters is still a year and a half younger than Bour and is performing well... it'd be kind of odd to single him out. I think he was comparing Silva's rapid promotion to the lack of promotion for Bour or Rohan. See, I thought that at first too, but the whole "many chances to fail" thing threw me off that one.

  15. Lie about their sexuality and say they are gay. For credibility. If we really want them to be credible, the only solution is to turn "It Gets Better" into a combination of a support video and hardcore gay pornography.
  16. You may be right. Of course, this makes the decision to bring up Cashner and use him in relief last year look even more poor than it already had.
  17. Apparently he told Rizzo if his option wasn't picked up, he wasn't getting on the bus.
  18. Welcome to the board! Glad to have a fresh set of eyes on things.
  19. I don't generally pay all that much attention to the Futures game. Anybody know offhand if it's one of those "each team gets a representative" sort of deals like the MLB All-Star game?
  20. I just skimmed through the Dunn signing thread from this offseason. It was fun.
  21. On his own, I wouldn't be a big fan of Brenly either. But the interplay between him and Len is top notch.
  22. Castro has all the physical tools to stay at SS. His problems are mostly from footwork and decision making... two issues which I do not see as getting better as a result of moving to 3B. The extra time at 2B might be of some use if he doesn't figure it out in a few years though. But I really do mean a few years... unless he gets significantly worse in a hurry, I don't want to see Castro moving off SS before he's 24-25.
  23. Best news in what has been a horrible season.
  24. http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=4897&position=P#pitchtype Take a look at his fastball velocity. If that isn't an indication of major arm issues, I don't know what is.
