  1. You only would do that if there's 0 outs...... and if there's 0 outs and Pierre's on base, that means we have Walker/Cedeno/maybe Murton up depending on the batting order. Unless there's a pitcher-hitter matchup at the plate that's clearly against the Cubs, I don't see why you'd do this.
  2. So do you want to call him "Tall Smooth" then? Yes. Sounds like a Starbucks drink.
  3. I always wonder what would have been Z's reaction if he had been pitching when Brant Brown dropped that ball against Milwaukee.
  4. Didn't Steve Stone counsel for this those few years he wasn't announcing?
  5. Starting in 1999 the Braves had four with Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz, and Millwood.
  6. Not saying that Hendry had a choice between the two, but who would you rather have for the rest of 2006?
  7. Sick. Houston 2003 vs Cincinnati 1990 (Charlton/Dibble/Myers): 339 IP (Charlton started 16 games), 2.28 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, 9.32 K/9, 2.47 K/BB. What the Williamson/Howry/Eyre are at now: 2.45 ERA (Williamson's Florida debacle was rough), 1.30 WHIP (we have 16 walks in 29 1/3 innings), 8.90 K/9, 1.30 K/BB.
  8. In high school we all had to read Ted Williams' The Science of Hitting. If anyone ever were to write a pitching companion to that book, it would definitely be Maddux.
  9. He's on the Glendon diet.
  10. I'll go with AB #42
  11. Rex Grossman just tore his ACL reading this again... Believe me, its not just the Cubs. Its all Chicago sports. That Michael Jordan guy did only have one injury in his career, and he had it very early in his career.
  12. Sosa getting pegged in the ear of his helmet and then standing an extra eight inches off the plate when he came back deserves mention.
  13. ehhh, jeter's got a better park to hit in and beltran provides a lot more defensive value i'd say it's awfully close, and that's only if you look ONLY at 2005. i suspect things will be different this year. They might be different this year, you're right. But Beltran's struggles last year were astronomical given his "biggest FA in history" hype. Is Yankee Stadium really that much of a hitter's park? 2005 Derek Jeter OPS+: 121 2005 Carlos Beltran OPS+: 95 Random side note: Francis Beltran's middle name is LeBron. And I thought LeBron was the only one named LeBron.
  14. I have to say that I loved seeing that, as well as Pierre excitedly clapping outside of the dugout right afterward.
  15. I do remember the Cardinals questioned his work ethic when they shipped him off. Not sure if that's the whole story behind the startling drop in his numbers.
  16. I'd give a nod to the Yankees front four: Randy Johnson, $16M/year Mike Mussina, $15M/year Carl Pavano, $10M/year Jaret Wright, $7M/year
  17. If Pedro does that at a similar level of performance he's put up since the late 90s, I think he leaps past Clemens at that point. But that's a very big if.
  18. Happy birthday Bruce!
  19. Exactly. For a pitcher who has a relative amount of control over who gets a free pass (like Maddux), walks mean something completely different than for a pitcher who issues a lot of walks because he lacks control (early 90s Randy Johnson).
  20. Overall I'd put it Clemens, Maddux, Pedro. Clemens recent years of dominance in Houston and Maddux's recent years of average perforance put Clemens over the top. Side point #1: IMO, from his last year at Montreal until his near-4.00 ERA year in Boston, Pedro was the most dominant starting pitcher ever. Side point #2: This kind of surprised me, but of the three, Maddux has the best post-season ERA Clemens: 3.71 Maddux: 3.22 Martinez: 3.40
  21. Lee for Choi is up there in terms of disparity in talent, although the Marlins had no chance of holding onto Lee in the first place.
  22. Just as we shouldn't project Ronny's hot start with the bat to continue through September, we shouldn't expect his cold throwing start to be representative either.
  23. It's only been two weeks - players go through hot and cold streaks longer than that. Remember that Neifi was a decent hitter for a whole month last year.
  24. I didn't catch his single, but his double, walk, and line out to third all looked like great at bats.
