  1. Those three are worth quite a bit more than Ramirez IMO.
  2. The Angels value Figgins so highly, one person with ties to the Los Angeles organization said the team might ask the Cubs for third baseman Aramis Ramirez in return I don't think Hendry is actually considering any offer of Ramirez for Figgins because it was never actually offered. That was a speculative point by a source guessing the Angels would want for him.
  3. I really love the possibility of this deal! If ever there was a deal to make two teams in our division worse, this is it. Rolen is just about done being a productive everyday player. I don't know if he can still defend like he used to but his offensive numbers are a small fraction of what they used to be. Why the Brewers would be this enamored with him is a mystery. And Capuano? Didn't the Brewers lose 20 straight games started by him? Both are tremendously trending downward. St. Louis would be better served by dumping Edmonds and Rolen for young decent prospects (if possible) and rebuilding with a young rotation of starters like Wainright, Reyes and Hawksworth. Somebody associated Jim Hendry with 'Dumb and Dumber' in another topic, this is really probably more appropriate for two teams who should have a better grasp on moving their teams in the right direction.
  4. I like Teahen slightly more than I like Murton because I think MM has a brutal lack of power for someone his size. Murton's defense is boarderline acceptable - compared to a Teahen who can actually field his position. That being said, I have a bad feeling that if we acquire Teahen, he is Hendry's answer in the outfield. So in essence, we'd give up Murton and some schlub (hopefully) for Teahen and be set in the outfield. That's a huge downgrade from getting a capable, above-average outfielder and having Murton as the 4th OF.
  5. Which is the lesser of two evils? Marquis is the devil we know...however Dempster probably can't be quite as bad as a starter. Can we trade them both for a Jose Ascanio-type?
  6. Brian Roberts is the exact type of player I'd love to add to this team. And he's in the mold of what Hendry is looking for. He's a very good switch hitter who can steal bases and be depended upon as a leadoff man. This would be a major upgrade for our lineup purely because it takes Soriano out of #1 and puts him somewhere else that will actually allow him to produce runs more effectively. Roberts has a good eye, he gets on base and scores runs. I'm not even worried that he's 30. We need more smart vets on this team. Even if it displaces DeRosa to super-sub, I think this move would improve our team markedly.
  7. NOW, I would qualify this as a Cubs rumor: Brian Roberts-2B-Orioles Dec. 3 - 2:47 am et FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal believes the Cubs could make a run at Brian Roberts after losing out on Kaz Matsui. The Orioles wouldn't give up Roberts last year, as owner Peter Angelos vetoed a deal that would have sent him and Hayden Penn to Atlanta for Adam LaRoche and Marcus Giles. If the Cubs come calling, the Orioles would likely ask for Felix Pie. He'd probably be out of reach, but they might still have Sean Marshall, Matt Murton and Eric Patterson as possibilities to pick from. EDIT: I didn't catch that Rosenthal wrote this last night - and that someone already posted it. My bad.
  8. How does this qualify as a rumor? This isn't even speculation. The possibility that Brian Roberts might get traded in no way relates to the Cubs. This should be titled something like "Levine reports Brian Roberts may be available" or "Brian Roberts as a possible trade target".
  9. I can't believe this is how the Prior Era is going to end. The Promised One is going to leave before we can even find out if he's healthy and recovered - and by selling as low as possible. Two years ago we were rumored to have an offer of Miguel Tejada and Erik Bedard. Now we're considering a deal for two guys who may never crack a major league starting lineup. Why not wait until the trade deadline and see if we could actually get decent value for him? What's the risk? $3.5MM? If he would have panned out by now he'd be making $10MM on an extension. $3.5 millioin is not a huge risk today for any guy who's upside is a front of the rotation starter.
  10. I don't recall if Z's new contract contains a no-trade clause (and if so, to what extent), but wouldn't it make sense for the Twins and Cubs to discuss a possible swap of Zambrano for Santana? Zambrano's contract is representative of the type of deal the Twins would like to offer (5yr/$90MM) and he's also a player the Twins know can jump right in and keep them competitive without any risk. The Cubs would throw a prospect or two their way and have to negotiate a long-term deal before making the deal...but I think it's a no-brainer for both sides. Santana is considerably better than Zambrano notching a sub-3 ERA almost every year in the AL of all places. I see the extra money being well spent to get a future hall-of-fame-type like Johan Santana.
  11. Just to be technical, a strain is a tear. Technically, yes. However, a 1cm tear is more serious than a grade 1 strain. What I had was very easy to heal. I would guess Soriano's injury is between a grade 2 and 3 strain.
  12. Regarding Soriano's injury: Just to put in my two cents...I've had quad strains now twice and there's not much you can do except wait for them to heal. I had to stop running altogether for 2+ weeks, because every time I tried to become active again, they flared right back up. With a tear, I can't see there being any possible way to come back within even four weeks. Technically he should be spending some time on crutches so he doesn't aggrivate it further. A strain in itself is not a serious injury at all, all you can do is rest it and avoid fast-twitch movement. With a tear, he'll need to be completely off it until the tear is healed, otherwise it's going to continue to worsen. The point is there is absolutely no reason for him to try to rush back from this injury. The Cubs are notorius for knee-jerk injury comebacks and this is one that will bite them. He'll have no chance at playing in late September or October if he even tweaks it after his return.
  13. I just remembered why I stopped coming over to this [expletive] snob board. Later know-it-alls.
  14. Stupid Loser Sosa playing at a HOF level for us. LOSER. Are you resorting to name-calling now? I'm sorry the guy who never won anything isn't a loser. He's just a CHEATER. That's not open for debate.
  15. You can't be serious. This argument is absurd. Do you think that "loser" Sammy Sosa in his prime (1998-2002) would not help this team? If you don't, I'm not sure what to say. How many teams did he help in that period? How many times was LOSER Sammy in the playoffs?
  16. Why the H wouldn't we need to get a guy like Gagne? Bullpens are so important for championship runs and there aren't even any viable bats available or worth trading the farm for. Don't think of Gagne as replacing Dempster so much as he'd be replacing some waste of innings like Petrick and strengthening the pen overall. Big picture folks.
  17. It's time to let go folks. He's never going to be a Cub again. Nothing he's done since leaving the Cubs, quite literally, warrants his return - no matter how quiet his yap has been since leaving. He doesn't deserve to be on this team comprised of the anti-Sammy. These guys play good, sound baseball and play the game the way it's supposed to be played. That's what brought them back from 8.5 games. There's not a selfish player on this team. LOU CHANGED THE CULTURE FOR A REASON. It's because of LOSERS like Sosa that this change was needed on the North Side. It's completely contradictory to think that Sammy makes any sense with this group of players or with the man who has led them to this point - and to me - it's a bit of an insult.
  18. Rowand isn't an FA. Fine, trade for him then. He's on the block according to a lot of reports. Rowand's career numbers against LHers is .289/.351/.494/.845. Its not a bad back-up idea to getting Church. I don't think it would impact the decision to get Floyd in that Rowand is a righty and Hendry feels he needs a lefty bat with power who can give the Cubs some added punch on days against those tough right-handed pitchers. Floyd would make a much better DH than either Ward or Rowand. So, if you got Rowand, Floyd would still be an almost necessary upgrade. But acquiring Ryan Church kills all those birds with one stone. I'd love to get Rowand, but he's going to cost you a lot in players. i wouldn't give jacque jones for aaron rowand, talk about overrated. the guy runs into a fence to make a catch and all of the sudden he's the best thin since sliced bread. I kinda like Rowand, but all I could think about throughout this thread is the gung-ho-bounce-off-the-walls-defense he plays and how it would eventually get him killed at Wrigley.
  19. Seriously, he's a bench option. People are picking this thing apart as if these transactions even matter. I actually think some posters here believe you can sign a guy like Cliff Floyd who would start on 15-20 teams and make him your 25th man. This transaction barely even warrants discussion.
  20. I can't believe that there was another team out there willing to even give him $12 million. He had SF by the short and curlies because he knew that SF wants him to break the record there. SF fans are the only fans left who don't hate him as a person. In speaking to the Giants fans that I've met, they still like the guy. He wouldn't have been embraced in any other city for breaking the all-time HR record. I must say that StL would have been a decent destination because of their fanbase, and it would have helped me to hate them more. I wouldn't have minded seeing them waste a ton of money on a PT player either...
  21. Hendry somewhat set the market for these relief pitchers... Doesn't that mean his jaw clicks? I can't see how that would affect his pitching...
  22. I don't know, Colleti stockpiled middle infielders in the past. I wonder if he will do the same with corner OF's. He already has...Ethier, Gonzo, Kemp, Loney, Marlon Anderson, Repko, Werth They can throw Loney into the deal too. Isn't Marlon Anderson a 2B, and is he really good enough to even compete with any of those other guys anyway?
  23. The odds of him putting up numbers like he did last season are very small, and the cost of acquiring him would be very high. He put those numbers up in half a season. How could he not match them again? You could argue that he could nearly double them in a complete season, could you not???
  24. Yes, I can now confirm that Ofman did say that "The White Sox and the Cubs are both pursuing Rocco Baldelli".
  25. I've read that Offman (or someone who came on right after) also said the Cubs were pursuing Baldelli and might have made an offer already. Did you here this? No, as I mentioned in a recent post, I was in the car and had to turn the radio down so my boss could yap on the phone. What I heard was pretty intermittent.
