  1. Eric Patterson is mentioned as one of ten AFL prospects to watch in BP's Future Shock.
  2. Updated Notes from the Winter Meeting from Rosenthal Cubs are listed as interested, along with the Yankees, Red Sox, O's & Blue Jays (AL East frenzy). The Brewers would then look to deal the dreaded Doug Davis. Yankees may consider moving Scott Proctor to the rotation. Blue Jays say they'll need to be overwhelmed to deal Wells. LaRoche would have moved to the OF or been traded. Also: If the DRays win the bidding for Iwamura, they may not play him at 3B (sounds like lots of teams are thinking that). And scouts love Ben Zobrist.
  3. Here's a thread with the BoSox updated current committed budget. They've said they want to stay within the luxury tax threshold of $148M. The posting fee -- whatever it turns out to be -- doesn't count against that payroll. The link above assumes a $140ishM payroll. Depends on the contracts, but they shouldn't have a problem affording both and staying within the $148M.
  4. That's what I was wondering, but it was too late to google. (pluswhise I'm lazy)
  5. I don't understand this quote from SI.com. Did they just mistakenly name the wrong agent? Is Katz making fun of Kinzer? heh I suppose opinions differ on what 'a little more' is. This might be why the MLB Players Union wouldn't make a fuss. The 'hometown discount' is all speculative in the end, whereas Aramis and his agent brought in a lot more guaranteed money by opting out in the first place.
  6. Either that or someone needs to stay away from EBay auctions. :)
  7. Ok, thanks. I was out of town for awhile and thought maybe I missed something.
  8. Does Izturis have a degenerative knee condition? I had heard that his elbow problems were degenerative, but I hadn't heard about his knee. Egads.
  9. From a few days ago. San Diego and Cleveland have confirmed they've bid. TB, Boston and Philly are listed as possibilities, though earlier in the thread there were quotes indicating Philadelphia was backing out of bidding.
  10. Cleveland and San Diego submitted bids. Not sure who else might have.
  11. Well in fact we are higher than we were before. Derreck Lee isn't injured, we do not have Pierre in CF. We are not paying Wood $13 million. Miller is probably close to fully rehabed and is only getting $0.5 million more and could be our #5 next year (in APRIL). Prior "could" come back. We have a hitting coach that preaches more patient hitting practices. We have a manager that will not stand for loosing and demand the team win close games. (IE: not laying over for the pirates and reds). We have a president and team that knows fans are angry and they are obviously going to push hard for some top talent and the goal is to win next year. And according to sources payroll was upped to $115 mil. So I would hardly say we are were we were last year. We are MUCH better. And it's going to get MUCH better. The Cubs.com article that talks about Ramirez & Wood signing also said that Hendry will be talking with the agents for Pierre & Blanco over the next week.
  12. According to Buster Olney on ESPN.com, the Seibu Lions have until Tuesday 5pm, New York time, or 96 hours after the bidding ends, to announce whether they have accepted the bid. I can't imagine if the rumors about the Red Sox bidding between 37-45 million dollars are true, that the Lions management and ownership would have to think very long about accepting it. Perhaps, the longer they wait, the less believable that rumor becomes. Thanks, I updated the subject header.
  13. The decision deadline is Tuesday, I assume Japanese time. I haven't heard whether there's a specific time.
  14. Is that because Hendry is a nice guy, or because Aramis loves us almost as much as we love him? Aramis is just too lazy to be bothered to look for new in-season digs in SoCal. (Yes, it's a JOKE, I'm thrilled he's back!) Carrie Muskat was on XM about an hour or so ago and made it sound as though the agreement came this morning vs. last night. She said they were close last night but "crossed the t's and dotted the i's" today ... for whatever that's worth.
  15. For those of you who are going to the convention or convention-related events, we open up some threads in the Events Forum beforehand. It would be great if you could post about goings-on there and your experiences at the convention. Pictures welcome! :)
  16. Congrats to Hendry for getting this done and for less money than I would have thought 16 hours ago. This team was still about the worst team in baseball last year and there's still a long long way to go.
  17. 5/$73 i think. with a 6th year team option i think? ESPN said that was a mutual option. Trib says mutual as well. When Rosenthal first reported it, he referred to the sixth year as a 'vesting option.' It might be something that could auto-vest due to something like plate appearances, or convert to a mutual option if it doesn't vest. Or Rosenthal could have been wrong. :) Hopefully we'll find out more tomorrow.
  18. Maybe Hendry gets some credit on this one. :D
