  1. But it does give them the out of making a sacrificial firing, like Rothschild, to spare the rest. On the other hand, Hendry has treaded water for so long and Dusty defends his coaches so vigorously that it's hard to see this ending without Dusty and his coaches being booted. Juan Lopez might be surprised at the level of outrage that would occur if he were the only one fired in this debacle.
  2. The Muskat version: The wheels have come off, that's pretty clear. I still place a lot of value on Ramirez and try to keep him unless it's a truly amazing deal. He hasn't been in the spotlight before and that takes some getting used to. It's a really frustrating year and it can't be much fun for him going through it, just like it's not much fun for anyone else.
  3. If they go with either, it can't be interim. There has to be a commitment. I wonder if Girardi is figuring into the debate at all, he supposedly may have an out clause if another managerial position becomes available.
  4. How healthy is Dierker? Stone mentioned him the other day as someone who descended from the booth and did a fine job managing, but then said he left due to health issues and made it sound like he was very frail these days.
  5. Phil Rogers gets in on the act pimping Razor Shines for the job.
  6. I won't even believe that Hendry has the inner fortitude to can a coach until he proves otherwise.
  7. Amazing how the phrase "The MacPhail Thought Police" has swept across Cubs message boards & blogs over the past few weeks. usage example: The MacPhail Thought Police beat Williamson into submission.
  8. and because of adrian beltre, he won't get near that kind of $. What's the Cubs deal he's signed to now? I don't think he has to get close to Beltre to exceed his current contract.
  9. This reminds me of when Alou complained a bit about how the pitchers were getting all the attention in ... '04, I guess it was? It's a weak free agent class. I don't like Aramis acting like the primadonna, either, but until that ARod trade happens, I'm concerned about losing him for zero-to-diddly-squat.
  10. I guess the likelihood of Aramis exercising his opt-out clause at the end of the season just went up some more.
  11. Murton's fate is very tied to anyone with a pulse on the roster who could conceivably play LF. Might not be fair, but that's the deal right now.
  12. Check EBay. Just a hunch.
  13. Pagan was picked up first of that trio and actually played well during spring training. The fact that there are about 8 25th men on the Cubs roster doesn't mean that Pagan can't be a useful 4/5 outfielder. Murton was losing his time to Bynum. Pagan's presence has little to do with Murton's fate.
  14. The Angels did the same thing with Nick Adenhart in the 2004 draft, where they threw a boatload of money at him despite being a 14th rounder. That's turned out quite well for them so far. Indeed, Adenhart's tearing up the Midwest League. Did he have TJ surgery, too? Hopefully we'll look back on the Colvin - Samardzija - Huseby draft and marvel at the Whiz-Kid-Wilkins' unorthodoz wallet-opening spending spree. I guess we should just enjoy it at the pre-minor league level, since it's been made clear that no high-level (ie, MacPhail cackling over how he'd never sign Guerroro, etc) free agents will be signed by the Cubs at the MLB level. A few million on the draft, a few million on Neifi, Rusch, who cares? Someone's bound to pan out.
  15. It's not good, bro! He's our MANAGER!
  16. Wow, does anyone think this is a good idea? Paying an 11th-round HS pitcher coming off TJ surgery $1M+? I hope they put a horse tendon in that arm of his. I like that the article spells out that the deal was basically signed two days before the draft. It's a little amusing that moneyball talked about overdrafting guys and pre-signing them to cheap contracts vs. underdrafting guys and signing them to expensive contracts.
  17. It would get the point across that there's still money to be made in buying Cubs tickets. When you can't EBay 'em for twice face value, they'll stop being sold.
  18. Dusty is very loyal to his coaches. He fought hard against the firing of Wendell Kim. I don't see him staying if the coaches are fired. When I see suggestions like keeping Dusty while firing the coaching staff (a popular thought at some blogs), it boggles the mind. Dusty is more loyal to his coaches and to certain players than he is to the team. Hendry is turning out to be more loyal to Dusty than he is to the team. The team continues to suffer because of this. That problem just continues the further on up the ladder you go.
  19. It's up to Hendry to fire Rothschild, not Dusty. Rothschild pre-dates Dusty and has a separate contract.
  20. He was holding a sign that said, "Dusty's an idiot"! So are a lot of Cubs fans these days.
  21. As assumptions go, this gets my vote for the most well-founded.
  22. that's no fun though. And had the original post been clearer, none of this would ever have happened. Should he have to explain what the red line is, what kind of posters he meant and who the Cubs are? We wouldn't want any confusion. Seemed clear enough to me. The poster handout has been going on for the past couple of years, I think.
  23. He was at the game last night providing stats to the bleacher crowd. :)
  24. change this team's name to the chicago knee jerk reactions. A lot of those boos were for Dusty's trip to the mound.
  25. HawkCub makes triple digits!
