  1. Seeing KG reduced to Jack Haley with more profanity is one of the highlights of the series for me.
  2. That's a fair point and I tried to acknowledge that idea when I wrote: Anyway, here's hoping that turd of a player goes 4 for 20 tomorrow night against the Bulls.
  3. Well, I think I got everything out of it, but this part seemed to speak to your notion that PER does a poor job of measuring a player's ability: is exactly what I said here: It's a good tool, but it stops far short of telling the whole story when ranking a player if it's the only tool you're going by. It's exactly what you said? Really? PER must be consumed using context versus PER doesn't accurately measure a player's ability? I didn't think the article's point was the latter at all.
  4. Agreed. This is why I mentioned Pierce's plus/minus above. Which was only fifth best on his own team this year, by the way. I don't think that's true. It might feel intuitive to you, but I'd like to see more evidence to support this than hypotheticals. Fair enough. I put less faith in basketball metrics than, say, baseball ones because you're right, they still need some tweaking. But I think they provide more value than the "eye test" of the average fan. You might find this useful reading, http://myespn.go.com/blogs/truehoop/0-38-359/PER-on-Trial.html
  5. "as well as" Yeah, saw that. It just didn't make sense. PER has flaws. Got it. But there's no verb after as well as. His diminished role does what? His defensive contributions mean what? I made the leap that you were suggesting a diminished role hurt Pierce's production, so I pointed out that PER accounts for that.
  6. PER does have flaws, but one of them isn't accounting for diminished roles in an offense.
  7. Pierce doesn't crack the top 50 using Hollinger's PER stat. http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/hollinger/statistics?sort=per&pos=all&seasonType=2&action=login&appRedirect=http%3a%2f%2finsider.espn.go.com%2fnba%2fhollinger%2fstatistics%3fsort%3dper%26pos%3dall%26seasonType%3d2 I'd rank him higher than that because of his decent plus/minus and his scoring during "clutch" time, http://www.82games.com/0809/CSORT11.HTM But arguing that Pierce isn't a top 30 player at this point in his career is more accurate than hilarious.
  8. Wait, what? Maybe four years ago. He's not close to top 10 now.
  9. Well, that's what happens when you base your conclusions off a two-game sample size. Boston is a better team than the Bulls. They're not head and shoulders better than the Bulls without Garnet, but they're measurably better. I couldn't be happier about a 1-1 split with the game two loss coming on a last second shot.
  10. Did anyone honestly expect the Bulls to be up 2-0? C'mon, they've looked great so far. I love to see KG sticking his chin out after a narrow, 3 point win at home over the 7 seed. Hilarious.
  11. How much smack did you talk to your Bulls-fan friends before this series started, SSR?
  12. Huh? They're up 1-0 and down 2 points in the four quarter on the road in game two.
  13. They must've updated their mock; it's now James Johnson at 16 and Hansbrough at 26. Draft Express doesn't take need into consideration with their mocks this early, so I'd take it with a grain of salt.
  14. That's what I thought was going to happen until they dropped game one. I don't see the Bulls losing two games at the UC if Garnett isn't playing.
  15. Ha ha. Ray Allen was washed up 3 years ago.
  16. From Blogabull http://www.blogabull.com/2009/4/16/840394/the-effect-of-garnett
  17. Assuming your hypothesis is correct, that more exposure to minorities leads to more racial tolerance, how does that support the idea that Cubs fans are the most racist fans in baseball? I could see someone arguing that Chicago isn't as racially tolerant as it should be given it's size, but it's still more tolerant than a lot of other cities with professional sports teams.
  18. I don't see how population size matters much. Are you arguing that Chicago has a higher percentage of racists relative to its population than the other cities CubinNY listed? It's not like Wrigley holds more people than the average MLB stadium.
  19. In the 1989 calendar year, the Bears, Bulls, Hawks and Cubs all played in the semifinals of their respective sports. They all lost in the semis, too. (49ers, Pistons, Flames, Giants)
  20. His physical superiority combined with star-friendlier rules. Lebron is a big boy, but Jordan had the referees cell numbers on his phone and would call them for hookers. He was very close with them. I doubt anyone, with Shaq a close second, ever got the calls Jordan got. At the very least, Lebron doesn't have an easier go at it. I suspect Wolf's talking about the hand checking restrictions in today's NBA. Jordan got plenty of calls, but he also got fouled harder than any star player gets fouled in today's game.
  21. His physical superiority combined with star-friendlier rules. Gotcha. I remain skeptical. He's been playing with those rules to date, and he hasn't out produced Jordan yet.
  22. Nippon Professional Baseball has launched a version of their web site in English. http://www.npb.or.jp/eng/ There isn't a lot up there outside of rosters, 2008 stats, schedules, history and stadium information, but it's still cool to see.
  23. I didn't do that. I compared their production at the same ages, and they're virtually identical with a slight nod to Jordan so far. Why you think Lebron is on his way to surpassing Jordan? I'm still not convinced Lebron will be able to put together four consecutive 31+ PER seasons like Michael did. Outside of Shaq and Wilt, who both dwarfed their opponents physically, no one besides Jordan has been able to sustain that level of dominance. I agree it's possible for Lebron to do it, I just don't think we've seen enough to even consider it likely.
  24. Lebron's production in his age 23 and age 24 seasons has been Jordan-like, no doubt. But he's not surpassing Mike yet. http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/j/jamesle01.html http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/j/jordami01.html PER at Age 23: Mike 29.8 - Lebron 29.1 Age 24: Mike 31.7 - Lebron 31.5
