    You don't remember last year's team being extremely inconsistent in November? The 2004-2005 team was consistently bad at least. There are eight new players on this team, including two rookies whom I expect to be solid contributors by season's end, and the team's November schedule is brutal. Maybe I'm the only one who wasn't expecting the Bulls to win on the road in Dallas when the schedule was released. Finishing the month at 7-7, 6-8, and making up some ground in December is my hope. This team needs some time to gel.

    Scouts have also talked about him moving to 2B, and I know he's played some 2B during the MLB-NPB All-Star series. I have him on tape. Small, small sample but I remember him making a few highlight-real worthy plays. Maybe that's where the scout talk stems. Also, do you have access to fielding data for the 2006 Japanese baseball season? I don't believe it's been released in English yet.

    I'm neither surprised nor frustrated. They finished November 7-6 last year, 1-10 the year before. If they can avoid a long losing streak during the first couple of months of the season, I think they'll be in solid shape for a run come playoff time.

    I understand your position. I put more weight on BB:AB than BB:K, though. As long as he's getting on base at a good rate, I'm not too worried how he's making his outs. I think Ighuci's .281/.352/.422 is a lot closer to what Iwamura will do his first season than Kazuo's .267/.310/.379. I haven't read anything that suggests his posting fee will be as high as $5M, and I think he'd jump at a 3-year, $8M-$9M initial contract. In any event, he's not going to be a Cub most likely.

    I'm not aware of any -- other than previous reports suggesting the Cubs were looking to become active in Asia this offseason.

    #'s in Japan League: Ichuiro-Awesome BB/K ratio coupled with high average. Matsui-Awesome BB/K ratio couple with good average and solid power. Iguchi-Last 2 years good BB/K ratio Johjima-Last 2 years great BB/K ratio, the others were still pretty good. Kaz-Last 2 years awful BB/K ratio, the other previous years were average. Iwamura-Awful BB/K ratio. He's only batting around .300 in Japan and with his awful BB/K ratio its not likely he will be putting up similar numbers like the other guys above because he cant control the strike zone. He has age on his side but he's definelty a risk. I think injuries played a much, much larger role in Kazuo's struggles than a poor BB:K ratio. That said, Iwamura's BB:AB is solid, much better than Kazuo's was in Japan. And his past three years in Japan are right in line with Iguchi's -- .310/.387/.561 to .314/.389/.520.

    Iwamura's production over his last three years in Japan is a little better than Iguchi's. I think he's very likely to succeed in MLB -- especially for the amount of the rumored bids I've seen.

    Taguchi was a career .277/.333/.387 hitter in Japan -- Shinjo, .254/.305/.432. Those numbers are far from good. What other players from Japan are you talking about? What about Kaz Matsui? What about Ichiro, Hideki Matsui, Iguchi and Johjima? Outside of Kazuo, all Japanese hitters that produced at -- or above -- Iwamura's level in Japan have had success in MLB.

    I agree the winning bidder would have a ton of leverage, and 4/$40M would represent a large raise for Matsuzaka. I think he'd jump at it. But he could go back to Japan for a season, and hope the Lions would post him again if he were really dissatisfied with the offer. I don't see it happening, but he doesn't have to take anything. He's only 26.

    Who knows? A NY Times article suggested he might go to the next highest bidder. If the Red Sox didn't bid in good faith, I'd love to see MLB rule that Matsuzaka goes to the next highest bidder and the Red Sox have to pay Seibu the difference between their bid and the next higgest bid. But I doubt the penalty would have that much teeth.

    No buzz to that effect, and he's never asked to be posted. Matsuzaka, Iwamura and Igawa had all asked to be posted repeatedly leading up to this season.

    The equivalent of 10 games into a baseball season. The angst is likely to continue through November, too, given their schedule and all the new faces. This team has finished strong under Skiles, and I expect them to do so again this year.

    When the Lions were a powerhouse back in the 1980's, there was one head honcho. I don't know if that's changed since then or not. One guy would make the decision a lot easier.

    With absolutely no leverage. The players association in Japan is a joke. He's wanted to come to the US for years, and that desire means little to most of the NPB teams.

    I wasn't suggesting a sudden change of heart -- just that some of the deciders might still be reluctant about it. But it's more likely they're just being meticulous as you suggest.
