  1. I wouldn't say Dunn will come cheaply, but it sounds like there is very little interest in him. While we'd obviously have to give up something better than what the Reds will get back in draft compensation, but that'd sure be worth it for the stretch run (and our draft compensation). Frankly, I don't buy the whole "intradivision" pricetag in a situation like this where one team is way out and the player will be a rental. If the Reds like what we're offering more than 2 draft picks, then why should they hurt their team by turning us down? They aren't competing against us for the rest of the year. Given that Ibanez has some teams very intersted in him with the M's having a big asking price, I really don't think the cost will be that different for the two players. And definitely nowhere near the difference value.
  2. In last offseasons rankings Ibanez was solidly an "A". However, dropping off his 2006 season and replacing it with his 2008 season puts him much closer to the A/B threshold. Unless he picks it up in the home stretch, I don't think he'll make it...but it will be close.
  3. The minor league pitcher the Braves got must be pretty good, because The D-Backs offer seems a lot better on paper. Hes one of the games better relief prospects. And no, no it doesnt seem a lot better, on paper, papyrus, cave walls, or whatever you want to write it on. I'd say they are actually fairly even.
  4. Is it really that hard to figure out? http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/stats/aggregate?sort=runs&split=0&group=9&season=2008&seasonType=2&statType=pitching&type=reg They're definitely outplaying their pythag by quite a bit, but they have been very good at preventing runs.
  5. For a 120 OPS+, I'd give a couple of decent minor leaguers. Ibanez would force Edmonds to the bench and give us a heck of a pinch hitter. I'm not convinced Edmonds will stay healthy all year. I agree with you...Even if Ibanez isn't playing real well this year the fact that we could get another left handed center fielder in case of a Edmonds injury. Ibanez is most definitely not a CF. He can barely play the corners. Kosuke would move to center and Ibanez would stand in right. So then why not get Adam Dunn? Based on everyone wanting Ibanez and no one wanting Dunn, their costs might be pretty close, their defence (or lack thereof) is pretty close, but Dunn is loads better on offense.
  6. I would have to think any Manny to the Dodgers deal would have to include LA parting with either Kemp or Ethier. Perhaps Kemp and Hu for Manny? I heard something about a Manny for Kemp rumor. Am I the only one that thinks the Dodgers would be idiots to do that deal? If the Dodgers are willing to part with Kemp for a rental, can we sell them on Edmonds? He's tearing it up and a heck of a lot cheaper than Manny. We'll even swap young SS. Edmonds and Cedeno for Kemp and Hu. They can have Eyre too. In what world are Edmonds and Manny interchangeable?

  8. Trade Cedeno and Eyre... and pick up Everett. Bingo...exactly what a buddy & I were talking about this morning... Sounds like the report on Everett wasn't accurate. Star-Tribune says he's still with the Twins. http://ww3.startribune.com/blogs/christensen/?location_refer=Sports:highlightModules:1 Casilla's bum thumb is forcing them to keep Everett.
  9. I normally hate Christina Karhl, but she summed it up pretty well here...
  10. Considering they have two of the best corner OFs in the league (at least for this year) in Carlos Quentin and Jermaine Dye, I'd have to say no. Do they have a good DH too nilo? I wonder since Manny wants to leave if he'd accept being just a DH as well. Thome is no Manny but he's pretty good. Exactly. And I don't think Manny would want to DH. Although he probably should DH (although hes much much better in the field than a lot of people give him credit for), that would significantly lessen his value going into his walk year (if he has his way).
  11. so even a dumb redneck can realize that Griffey is terrible in the field

  13. Built-in excuses for Lou? Yes, it's stupid to keep a reliever on the active roster but not use him, in part because it's easy to get rusty over those long breaks. Why would he be wrong for criticizing Lou about Eyre being rusty? he would be right, i'm just saying that Keener98 is going to complain either way. Either he doesn't put him in and Lou is dumb, or he puts him in and Lou is dumb How about Lou use his relievers efficiently and allow the shakier guys to get some innings in low leverage situations and save the better guys for higher leverage situations. Sometimes that is hard when you have a stretch of one or the other.
  14. I don't get why the Angels would give away anything of value for Tex. They are all but a lock to make the playoffs (BP has them at 93.8% for the division and 94.5% to make the playoffs). Tex obviously makes them better, but how much value does that bring over a small sample size like the playoffs? The only way they should do it is if they have a window to negotiate a long term extention.
  15. I think a few pages back Jon posted some pitch/fx charts that showed his FB has about 11 inches of tail. For reference, home plate is 17 inches wide. So a FB could start in the middle of home plate and end up 2.5 inches inside to a RH hitter (note mad math skillz).
  16. Well that should be the very reason why you should learn sabermetics, not shun them. With sabermetrics you learn about sample size that explains that series. 'Shun' isn't even close to describing how I view sabr. I like the stats, but they are not absolute and only explain results, not necessarily predict. What do you use to predict player/team performance? Well, I'm not betting on baseball, so I tend not to predict results. I don't see much value in personally spending copious amounts of time studying the deeper statistics, in order to predict an outcome of a baseball game. I have no use for that. I just listen/watch the game and hope my Cubs win. Stats are useful for fantasy baseball though. I think a manager should use stats to make lineups of course, and not go with gut feelings. However, something that bothers me is when stats betray us (like last years playoff series vs the D-backs), it's simply written off as 'fluke' or 'small sample size', which has just as much justification as a good excuse as gut feelings or hunches. How did "stats" betray us?
  17. Will Eyre is Scotts brother. We have Scott Eyre. :D
  18. In the grand scheme of left handed/switch hitting CF, heres a list of guys that would be available now or in the offseason and don't terribly suck (ie Pods, Patterson, Bourn, etc): Carlos Beltran Nick Swisher Ryan Sweeney Mark Kotsay Jody Gerut Nate McLouth Coco Crisp Melky Cabrera Kenny Lofton Outside of those top two, not a very inspiring list. And those top two are probably the least available. Of course we already have a lefty CF...hes just playing RF.
  19. Everyone but the Cards realized that he needed a change of scenery 2 years ago and that delaying that would only hurt his value. They got a live arm for him, but 2 years ago they could have gotten a hell of alot more.
  20. His blog http://www.jeff-samardzija.com/blog.asp No update since he was called up...
  21. It'd be interesting to find out how many of his pitches were actually in the zone. Seemed to me (I was at the game so its really hard to tell) that he got a lot of swinging strikes on pitches that ended up way outside the zone. Hes kinda reminding me of Juan Cruz.
  22. Two in one day...nice work Shapiro.
  23. Good ridance, no one likes a know-it-all snob anyway. I think what he meant to say was "We understand you have actual experience with these guys. Obviously, that will affect your opinion of them, but we would like to know why you have those opinions. Could you please describe why you feel that why other than nebulous feelings that hes not responsible for the on the field product (duh, thats the GMs job) or off the field project (duh, the team has a long and storied history). What doesn't he understand? How does he treat front office people poorly? If you could enlighten us as to WHY you feel the way you do that would be a great addition. Thank you." Also, hasnt there been a pretty big turnover in baseball ownership since the strike in 94? Arent there very few good old boys? And, wouldn't the lawsuit come from the Tribune shareholders?
  24. Yeah, and guess who pitched that day...Doc. No, he pitched the day before. Shawn Camp started that game. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=280720130 Actually it was John Parrish who started the game you are talking about. But the word "yesterday" I thought might be a bit confusing since the article was put up at 4:30 AM so the writer probably stayed up and wrote it after the game. Meaning that "yesterday" to him could have been not the game he just watched but the game before. But maybe thats a stretch.
