  1. If you're saying what I think you're saying, I disagree Bruce. Our payroll, in and of itself, is not the problem. We've given too much money to the wrong people, I know . . . but spending $26 million more isn't going to make problems go away, especially if you're just trying to catch an AL team in the Payroll Standings. But, really, other than that, great article. I've always said you have to spend wisely. But for an outfit such as the Tribune Co. to self-impose these type of limits is indeed a problem.
  2. Lineups Cubs Pierre, CF Walker, 2B Barrett, C Ramirez, 3B Nevin, 1B Jones, RF Murton, LF Cedeno, SS Zambrano, P (D-Lee resting his wrist; says nothing wrong) Brewers Weeks, 2B Cirillo, 3B Jenkins, RF Lee, LF Fielder, 1B Hall, SS Gross, CF Rivera, C Jackson, P
  3. The Cubs do not have a nucleus of position players, their position players suck. They need to put together a lineup and a pitching staff. Do you really want to get rid of all the position players? If not, who would you keep. I'd guess DLee. Anyone else? Barrett? ARam? Murton? Cedeno? Walker (maybe for one more year)? None of the above? Only Lee approaches irreplacable status, but I'd trade any of them in the right deal. Agreed. BTW, I l read up on Shines in Rogers' article this morning. Seems like a sharp guy. 8-[ Lets hope that Sullivan is dead on here. Nicely played. Anybody named Razor would have to be sharp.
  4. Lineups Cubs Pierre, CF Perez, 2B Lee, 1B Ramirez, 3B Barrett, C Nevin, RF Murton, LF Cedeno, SS Prior, P Astros Biggio, 2B Taveras, CF Lamb, 1B Berkman, RF Wilson, LF Ensberg, 3B Everett, SS Ausmus, C Pettitte, P
  5. Not happening. Boy, you know the hero worship here has gone to Bruce's head when he refuses to even give his opinion on a rumor... The opinion WAS given. Ohhhh. On a more serious note, Bruce, since you're lurking here, have you ever crossed paths with Peter Gammons? There have been a lot of accolades and great stories related recently due to his unexpected surgery, and I was wondering if you had any personal notes to pass on. (Sorry for the potential thread hijacking). Yes, I've met Peter on a number of occasions, and he's been quite gracious. He's got great contacts within the game. One of the marks of a Hall of Famer is how the person treats others. I've not known Peter to "big-time" anybody. My other favorite Hall of Fame writer is Hal McCoy of the Dayton Daily News. He's a great reporter and an even better guy.
  6. Not happening. Boy, you know the hero worship here has gone to Bruce's head when he refuses to even give his opinion on a rumor... The opinion WAS given. More clearly, this trade is not happeing.

  9. No, he works for FOX and will be calling tomorrow's game. Ahh.... I guess that explains it. Wonder why he was there a day early though... Network crews get to the park a day early all the time. Nothing to read into this.
  10. I believe Doc Barrett was an old Western character.
  11. I didn't phrase it quite that way this morning, but I did ask about it. Got a long, "blah, blah, blah" answer. The kid needs to pitch _ somewhere.
  12. If somebody got a laugh out of it, that's great. I'm glad you did.
  13. Yeah, and it's really going to my head. Just looking out for you. Not trying to rain on the Bruce Miles fan club  No problem, Derwood. Actually, I wasn't trying to be funny there. I was just trying to point out an essential truth about Chicago Cubs baseball. And nope, no anal pun intended there.
  14. Yeah, and it's really going to my head. Before you know it he's going to be on Around the Horn. I'm not sure that comment constitutes "extreme worship," Goony.
  15. Yeah, and it's really going to my head.
  16. Truly one of the better people in the game. If you can find his game story from Game 6 of the 1975 World Series online, read it. Peter's always been nice to me and never "big-timed" me. His place in Cooperstown is well earned.
  17. Lineups Cubs Pierre, CF Bynum, LF Ramirez, 3B Nevin, 1B Jones, RF Mabry, DH Cedeno, SS Womack, 2B Blanco, C Prior, P Twins Castillo, 2B Punto, 3B Mauer, C Cuddyer, RF Morneau, 1B Hunter, CF Kubel, LF Tiffee, DH Bartlett, SS Bonser, P
  18. For free? Now that ain't right! Thanks for all the comments. I'll keep after 'em. I understand all the arguments against Carlos Lee. I wanted to throw a name out there. Somebody wanted to know, "Why not write this after the Detroit series?" When you have an off-day in the schedule, that gives you a better opportunity to come up with a feature or an analysis or a column. With space in the paper being so tight on game days, this provided the better opportunity. I WILL have to hire some of you guys as assistants when I take over the Cubs. LOL.
  19. Lineups: Cubs Pierre, CF Perez, 2B Ramirez, 3B Nevin, 1B Murton, LF Jones, RF Cedeno, SS Walker, DH Blanco, C Zambrano, P Indians Sizemore, CF Hollandsworth, LF Peralta, SS Hafner, DH Martinez, C Broussard, 1B Belliard, 2B Vazquez, 3B Gutierrez, RF Sabathia, P
  20. You make a great point. I had an older gentleman ask me what slugging percentage was. So no, not everybody grasps the OBP concept yet (some of them are working in baseball), but it's catching on, thanks in large part to great fans like you guys.
  21. Thanks for the comments. Sometimes you worry about harping on things too much, but examples like Hatteberg and the contrasts they point up are just too telling. Who knows how much effect we have? We did harp on Nevin not playing and then all of a sudden Dusty started him two days in a row.
  22. Bruce, if I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times. The word "kaplooey" is SADLY underused in sportswriting....:D Thanks for reading. Don't know if I've every used "kaplooey" before. It just seemed to fit last night's situation just fine. So did a couple other words, but I can't get them in the paper.
  23. Lineups Cubs Pierre, CF Walker, 2B Barrett, C Nevin, 1B Ramirez, 3B Murton, LF Jones, RF Perez, SS Zambrano, P Reds Lopez, SS Phillips, 2B Griffey, CF Aurilia, 3B Dunn, LF Hatteberg, 1B Kearns, RF Ross, C Claussen, P
