On the question of the Trib selling the Cubs, to the best of my knowledge, they've resisted long and hard having to do that. High finance isn't my forte, but I've to to think all possibilities are open. I'd bet against them selling soon, though.
Thanks for the comments, everyone. I put a lot of time and research into it. Funny thing is, I like Andy MacPhail very much as a person. He's interesting, personable and well-read. But I, along with the rest of the writers, have an obligation to the readers to point out the record. And that record is not a good one (duh). Maybe putting some things in black and white will get some Tribco people to thinking, unless they just want to go ahead and sell the team. Maybe there are a couple of free safeties out there in college footall this season that maybe...nah.

Dusty and Jim must hate you. Keep up the good work! Any inside word on Freddi Gonzalez or Joe Girardi? Not yet. Too early to tell, and everybody's playing it close to the vest. Would Hendry really risk hiring Gonzalez, a would-be first-year manager, to lead this team when Big Jim only has a 2 yr leash himself? That's a good and fair question. But how did those veteran, big-name managers _ Don Baylor and Dusty Baker _ do with the Cubs? So yes, I think Hendry might "risk" it with Gonzalez. Will he? I don't know.

(Attempted) answers to questions: I have no idea why Bynum ever starts, plays second base or bats second. And this is one day after Dusty talked up Theriot. Yes, the job is harder in these situations. A lot of people think media members love negative stories, but I can tell you that a winning team is much more fun to cover. These games have been absolutely meaningless, and all the attention is on football and the White Sox. I was just telling people in the press room that I've traveled with the Cubs for nine years now, and I've covered four really putrid teams: 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2006. But overall, I still enjoy the job and love baseball, so it isn't all that bad. I've got no complaints.
The whole purpose was to have a little fun and throw some questions out there. Sorry you missed the point. It ain't all supposed to be serious. If that's the worse piece you've read, I'll be glad to send you my whole archive.
OK, Vance, I'll mention Dierker one of these days. I like him, and from a media relations standpoint, he'd be great. He was in the radio booth, so he knows how to deal with the media. As far as the other posts go as to why nobody else writes about this stuff (and if I can grasp some of it, it CAN'T be all that difficult), it seems that new ideas take a long time to catch on in the mainstream media. I've spent a lot of hours studying sabermetrics, and I'm still trying to get a handle on a lot of things. Most of us grew up with AVG, HR, RBI, and a lot of us haven't gotten beyond them. You're seeing some changes now, but it's going to take time. Len Kasper does a really nice job with this without overwhelming the casual viewer. I'll keep after it.
