  1. Now that space is cleared on the 40-man, I expect it any day now, pending his physical exam.
  2. They become free agents. Word is the Cubs have re-signed Harben to a minor-league deal.
  3. As I pointed out on another thread, Giles will not be coming here if the Braves non-tender him. At three years and $13 million, I think the Cubs are pretty well committed to DeRosa. Figures. Are there any potential non-tenders that you think the Cubs might have any interest in? Probably, but it's hard to tell right now. You might hear of some "name" players being non-tendered and then tomorrow, they'll re-sign with their clubs on pre-arranged deals. The Cubs actually non-tendered Barrett after they traded for him.
  4. It's the silly season. Bruce, One question. Do you know if the Cubs have any interest in upgrading at either SS (Izturis) or 2nd (DeRosa/Theriot)? There is a rumor that Marcus Giles might be non-tendered. The Cubs will not look into Marcus Giles if he's non-tendered. They're happy with their infield, as you heard Mr. Hendry say. Is there any interest in Wilkerson? Ryan Church? Looks like Wilkerson will be tendered. The Nats are asking for a whole lot for Church. I'm not sure the Cubs have talked trade on Wilkerson, but he's a good option.

  7. Soriano is not playing winter ball. The Cubs told him a couple weeks ago they didn't want him to play. It has nothing to do with whatever Minaya told anybody. Where do people come up with this stuff?
  8. Les was a pleasure to be around. He seemed truly appreciative of his chance to pitch in the majors. At the end of the season, he said that was one reason he'd like to sign back with the Cubs.
  9. And believe it or not, both sides who participated in that debate came out of it feeling good that some bridges had been crossed. Both sides have a lot to offer. I've chided the Cubs for their lack of sabermetrics-friendliness, but in fairness, they're starting to look at this more seriously. The scouts side has to stop being so touchy about "stats guys" wanting to run them out of the business. I don't see that from the stats-oriented people; they'd just like to be welcomed into a world that has resisted change for 100 years. I'd like to see more dialogue.
  10. I never touted Hughes to be GM. I think he's great in what he does, and as I've tried unsuccessfully to point out for close to two years, even citing quotes, Hughes is nowhere near the close-minded person some people believe he is. I'll wave the white flag on that one.
  11. Yeah, I touched on this and then touched off a few pages of debate on another thread, the one that speculated on Hendry having to step down. I'm in the minority around here who thinks Gary Hughes is a darn fine baseball man and evaluator of talent. I might be a little biased because I know him and have talked a lot of baseball with him. He's got a pretty cool World Series ring from helping the Marlins procure some good players. But he didn't know what "DIPS" meant, and that made him an idiot to a lot of people.
  12. Money figure was way too high. I see our friends at the Trib have amended their story. I'll have a story up soon and a longer one in tomorrow's paper.
  13. I don't have the money figures, but you can pretty much count on this deal being done. Somebody wanted the Cubs to upgrade their offense. They just have _ with Marquis. Three years and $28 million could indeed be true. This is the kind of market it is right now.
  14. I don't know about the numbers, but I've been writing since last month that they're interested (I know there's a thread about this, so let's keep it over there. But I'll answer the question here.) I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him signed.
  15. These are excerpts from an interview I did with Gary Hughes for a big project in the spring of 2005: “There has to be a mesh in the beginning where you get something from both sides (scouts and stats guys)." "I have flown through three time zones to see a (high school) guy only to see the coach go, 'Put him on. Put him on. Put him on (issue intentional walks).' He never got an at-bat. That helps his on-base percentage." When I'm doing pro coverage and I get to the park and get a stat sheet, that's (OBP) the first thing I've looked for 30 years. Wow. This didn't just get invented." "What Billy Beane has done in Oakland is phenomenal. That's "money-ball." Do I agree with everything in the book that they do and how they did it? No. Do I admire the hell out of what they've done? Yes, because of the fact they're constricted by money. Don't tell me Boston's a "Moneyball" team, not with a hundred-bazillion dollar payroll. That's not "Moneyball." I don't think it fits the caricature.
  16. Denigrating someone because you don't like their method of getting things done is totally unfair and closed minded. Gary Hughes has gotten a lot of good things done in this game. He didn't know what DIPS was during a roundtable discussion? So what? That's so overblown. I look at Baseball America naming him one of the Top 10 Scouts of the 20th Century and one of the best player development executives for the 1990s. I look at all the players he has procured or helped to procure, one way or another, including all those players in Montreal and all those players in Florida. Oh, and he has a championship ring for his efforts in Florida. This guy has forgotten more about baseball and what makes a good player than most people will ever know. You don't have to agree with everything he says _ I don't _ but you have to respect the knowledge, the effort and the results.
  17. There's no question that an 11-man pitching staff would be preferable. You could have given Dusty 15 pitchers and that wouldn't have been enough for him.
  18. Absolutely nothing cryptic about it. I was just throwing it out there for the heck of it.
  19. Anybody here like? He hits lefty and has a solid OBP. Just thought I'd ask.
  20. Do you think they will look for a lefty shortstop, or a lefty CF and deal Jones? They like Izturis a lot so I don't see them trading him. The latter is more of a real possibility. This is what absolutely kills me. How can someone like a no hit-slick fielding SS a lot? They are a dime a dozen. The Cubs seem to have employed seemingly just about every single one of them over the last 3 or so years. If they went out and grabbed a JD Drew type for the last spot in the outfield and then picked up a Mark Loretta type to play 2b, I think the Cubs could get by. Maybe that's the plan, but with Vernon Wells or someone of that caliber rather than Drew. I've seen Izturis play enough that I just don't understand the manlove he's getting. And after a nearly 2 year layoff, he's bound to be even worse than he was before. Maybe we should sign Marquis. At least then we can count on more offensive production from the pitcher's spot than wherever Piniella decides to bat Izturis. Ughh. #-o I'm sure part of their reasoning is that they'll be batting Izturis eighth and not second, where Dusty had him in the order.
  21. They're looking at every possibility, including putting Jock there. Nothing is firm yet as trades take a lot more work than do free-agent signings.
  22. Do you think they will look for a lefty shortstop, or a lefty CF and deal Jones? They like Izturis a lot so I don't see them trading him. The latter is more of a real possibility. Is it a real possibility to think the Cubs will look to deal Murton and Jones and also try to get a bigger bat in LF and just put the LH-bat of Pie in CF? although, as a few others have said, if the Cubs truly want an impact LH bat they could just sign Bonds. It's highly doubtful they'd trade BOTH Murton and Jones. They're not assuming Pie will be ready on Opening Day. They won't sign Bonds.
  23. Do you think they will look for a lefty shortstop, or a lefty CF and deal Jones? They like Izturis a lot so I don't see them trading him. The latter is more of a real possibility.
  24. I could tell you no offer has been made (remember, Lugo bats right-handed and the Cubs haven't exhausted LH possibilities yet), and it would be true, but I remember how much fun that was the other day with Schmidt.
