Any word on who will be pitching in relief after Zambrano? Will there be a Gallagher or Shark sighting? Today it looks like Howry, Cotts, Rapada, Guzman and Ohman. Saturday, it looks like Miller (starting), Dempster, O'Malley, Samardzija, Gallagher, Marmol and Anderson.
I don't have the Angels' lineup, but the Cubs go this way: Soriano, CF Izturis, SS Lee, 1B Ramirez 3B Murton, LF DeRosa, 2B Blanco, C Pagan, RF Zambrano, P
Is Rocky a given name on his birth certificate or is a nickname from another name? I always wonder how people get named Rocky. Rocky Ty Cherry is his given name. Buck Coats is Buck Coats' given name. I wrote a little ditty about this the other day. Rocky Cherry and Buck Coats are pretty cool "baseball names." At least I think they are.
Now for both teams' lineups: Giants Roberts, CF Vizquel, SS Linden, RF Feliz, 3B Molina, C Sweeney, 1B Lews, LF Frandsen, 2B Zito, P Cubs Soriano, CF Murton, LF Lee, 1B Ramirez, 3B Barrett, C Jones, RF DeRosa, 2B Izturis, SS Marquis, P
OK, from Lou's envelope to you. Somebody start a game thread: Soriano, CF Murton, LF Lee, 1B Ramirez, 3B Barrett, C Jones, RF DeRosa, 2B Izturis, SS Marquis, P
that is good news. Bruce, don't you have to love Lou for penciling in Rich Hill to start Sunday against AJ and the White Sox on TV? Yeah, that's good stuff. I think all the players are ready for games to begin. I know I am.
The workouts are more fast-paced and efficient. Mike Quade hits a million flyballs in a short period of time, and Alan Trammell never stops. Trammell is one of the all-time great guys in baseball, dating to his playing days in Detroit.
Does he still start every reply with "Look" or "Let me tell you something"? I got a kick out of that during his first press conference with the Cubs. Oh yeah, we get a lot of, "Look," at the beginning of sentences. And a lot of "and, and, and, and, and," in the middle of sentences. Give you a chance to catch your breath while you're listening to your recorder.
Care to offer a comparison to the last regime? Dusty showed promise at the beginning of his tenure, but he never warmed to Chicago. As I wrote one time, he probably couldn't name all the beat writers and what paper they worked for. Lou has used my name more in the Fitch Park portion of spring training than Dusty did in four years. And I'm not exaggerating on that one. The San Francisco media treated Dusty with kid gloves, to say the least. And some people out there sniped at the Chicago media and Chicago fans for their "unfair" treatment of Dusty. And no, there have been no "Dudes" or references to Hank Aaron, Ralph Garr, Billy Swift (in reference to pitch counts), Bob Welch, and others in the daily news conferences.
They haven't begun to think in those terms yet. That's disturbing that they haven't at least thought of it. We're talking about a guy with a 6.02 ERA last year. I can't believe that he'll be allowed to post those type of numbers for very long after all the "World Series or bust" talk this offseason. It would make those words ring hollow if they were willing to keep a player starting for no reason other than contract. Why in the world would they talk about that issue publicly to the media? No team signs a guy for three years and $21 million and then says, "What do we do if he sucks?" No team. You're right, there's no way a team will talk about that publicly. Why plant a negative seed in a player's mind? The Cubs fully anticipate Marquis being in their rotation and being effective. If that doesn't happen, they'll cross that bridge when they come to it.
I share that optimism, even if cautiously so. Lou seems genuinely to believe this is as much talent as he's had as a manager. I'm confident he'll put productive lineups together. The health of the pitching staff will determine much as will Ted Lilly being able to throw innings and keep the ball down and Jason Marquis to bounce back. I'm not among those counting Marquis out. I gues spring training really is a time of optimism. Bruce, heard you on the radio this morning raving about Izturis's defense. How valuable do you think that will be for this staff? The pitchers already seem to like him. If he stays healthy, he can contribute greatly that way. The key is to make the routine plays.

Does it benefit you when we specifically click the link to open it? If so, please post that, I'm sure many (more) people will open your articles if its a benefit to you? I don't know if it benefits me or not. I'm sure the more hits the better, but I'm just glad people are reading and discussing.
As always, thanks for the link. Actually, I got a lot of nice comments on the piece, and they weren't all from the sabermetrically inclined folks. Matt was really, really good to work with when I interviewed him. He's a guy you definitely pull for.
There was more than one media take on the subject today. O:) I'll take the guy's numbers. And no, I don't believe there will be any problems between Ramirez and Lou.
Bruce, do you think this is going to have a big negative effect on getting a long-term deal done? Jim is going to have to say alot of negative things to Zambranos face in the process, and with a emotional guy like Carlos, it looks like getting a long term deal will be very difficult. No, I don't think this will affect the big picture adversely. Both sides seem to understand that this is business.
