If all things are equal, the club would probably choose Miller over Guzman, who has minor-league options. If you read Larry Rothschild's quotes the other day, he correctly noted that Guzman pitched for the first time in three years last year. He still needs to show he can throw strikes. He also needs to prove he can maintain his arm strength into a second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth inning. The competition is good, and maybe they can work a trade for Miller if Guzman clearly is the better choice. But my guess is things will be pretty close to equal, and the Cubs will bide their time.
Lou had an interesting comment after yesterday's game, in which Cherry was the losing pitcher after giving up the winning run in the ninth: "I wanted to see how he'd do after I threw his name out there." The reporters all talked to Cherry after Lou "threw his name out there." Now we'll see how he bounces back after the bad inning, an inning that any pitcher can have.
It's not great at this point, but "fallen apart" is too strong. He's got to straighten things out mechanically, and that process has him a bit frustrated.
Some site called the Daily Herald has a little story up now that says Soriano apparently nailed down the CF job. That pretty much means Pie, today's starter, wil go to Iowa to begin the season. Also a tidbit on Prior. I'd post a link, but I'm not too computer savvy. I write 'em and send 'em into the paper. :D
Or maybe they want to give Derrek an extra day or two to nurse his injury from today. That and Ward has been sick. Hoffpauir is seen as more of an "organization guy."
First Federer loses, and now this.... :) Bruce tends to struggle on the clay courts. And with making Clay Rapada my darkhorse, "Michael Wuertz," candidate for the pen this year.
Bruce, a couple questions... 1) is Barrett fighting a minor injury? I haven't seen much of him lately 2) is there any chance of Theriot beating out DeRosa for starting 2B? Barrett appears to be OK. For $13 million, DeRosa isn't going to sit. Lou has said Theriot is his main backup infielder.
Jake has gotten in a few games at AA in the corner OF and IF positions because his defense behind the plate isn't that good. I think he'll start the season at AA though with Geovany Soto and Koyie Hill catching at AAA but could get up to Iowa during the season. This is about right.
Does Colvin have a shot at making the team if we go with 11 pitchers? Or who would be the 25th man behind Floyd, Ward, Theriot, Pagan, and Blanco? No, he needs to go and work on his game instead of sitting around on the bench. The Cubs have bigger plans for him... Colvin will probably be sent out early to join his minor-league team (probably Peoria). He's looked good here. As is the case with many No. 1 picks, he got the ST invite as part of his deal. Baseball people I've talked to really like him. I'm about 1.5 hours late here, but I was wondering if you had seen Colvin? He was really thin last season and supposedly bulked up during the offseason and yet he looked thin in the pics and video footage I've seen so far. Any thoughts? He's added some weight, but he doesn't look "bulky" at all.

I was really hoping either he or Cliff Floyd would do for us what Grissom did last year. Why? Unlike Grissom, both could be very useful players this year (Floyd moreso than Ward, of course). Yeah, and both Floyd and Ward have guaranteed big-league money. Grissom was here on a minor-league deal.
