  1. How dare you try to bring logic into this thread. anyway..... So what's your favorite planet? Mines the sun. It's like the KING OF PLANETS! We all know that the moon isn't in fact made out of blue cheese, but I'll ask you this. If the Moon were made outta barbecue spare ribs, WOUDYA EAT IT? I know i would. I'd go back for seconds and wash it down with an ice cold budweiser! 1997 was quite a year. a lot of stuff happened. some good, some bad. mother teresa died. that was bad, unless you hated mother teresa. I myself was not a fan of hers, don't ask why. we were like oil and water, we didn't mix Ken Waller: What? Harry Caray: I know I would. Heck! I'd have seconds and then polish it off with a tall cool Budweiser. ------ I would do it. Would you? Ken Waller: I'm confused. Harry Caray: It's a simple question Dr, would you eat the moon if it were made of ribs? Ken Waller: I don't know how to answer that. Harry Caray: It's not rocket science, just say yes and we'll move on. Ken Waller: Yes. Harry Caray: Hey! How about this mad cow disease? Ken Waller: What about it? Harry Caray: Well, it was here for a while and then it went away. Your thoughts. Ken Waller: Yes, yes it was in the news for a while and then it disappeared from the news. Harry Caray: Good point. Gee I hope I never get it. Hey! What about this: if you had to choose between being the top scientist in your field or getting mad cow disease, what would it be? Ken Waller: Well of course I would choose to be the top scientist in my field. Harry Caray: Oh good. I was worried you'd choose mad cow. Ken Waller: Why would you think that? Harry Caray: I guess I'm just a worrier, that's why my friends call me whiskers. Ken Waller: I thought you said your friends call you whiskers cause you were curious as a cat. Harry Caray: Well Dr. Waller it has been a pleasure. We've covered a lot of ground, shared a few laughs, thanks for coming on. Ken Waller: My pleasure Harry. Harry Caray: He's a good kid. That's all the time we have. Join us next week with our guest Albert Einstein. What? Well apparently Albert Einstein died 42 years ago. You know what, we'll try to get him anyway. See you next time. Cubs win! Cubs win!

  5. my god i know there is something wrong with me when I am laughing harder at this thread than at the naked scene in Borat.
  6. Last year he hit 46 HR, good for 3rd in the NL, but batting leadoff for most of the year, he only drove in 95 runs. He also had a .560 SLG average in a pitcher's park. The issue I have with him batting leadoff for us is that all those HR's, and extra base hits would be wasted. I don't think Soriano's .350 (a career high) should warrant that leadoff spot, and would be more comfortable giving it to Theriot should we start him at 2B, at least on opening day. Right now, if what we had was our opening day lineup, I'd bat Soriano 2nd behind Theriot, and in front of lee. I'm still hoping one of Roberts or Drew is signed though. In that instance I'd bat them 2nd, with Soriano 3rd.
  7. Man, does this draft remind anyone of the 2001 draft. It's not to deep on premium talent like 2001's, with a catcher and 2 great pitchers among the elite. Then in the 4-10 spots There's a pretty good 3B and then the rest are likely to be pitchers. It still remains to be seen though if Price, Wieters, and Vitters would produce like Prior, Mauer, and Texiera.
  8. Yup Bruce Chen Tom Glavine Ted Lily Mark Mulder Andy Pettite (probably will retire) Roger Clemens (probably will retire) Mark Redman David Wells Randy Wolf Barry Zito Tony Armas Miguel Batista Zach Day Ryan Drese Adam Eaton Greg Maddux Jason Marquis Joe Mays Gil Meche Tomo Ohka Ramon Ortiz Russ Ortiz Vicente Padilla Chan Ho Park Brad Radke Jason Schmidt Trade Targets: Erik Bedard Jake Westbrook Carl Pavano Tim Hudson Jeremy Bonderman Freddy Garcia Dontrelle Willis Jason Jennings
  9. I'd rather put all my money in one basket (Soriano) than in a bunch of baskets of fire (relievers)
  10. Lee would look nice in our lineup. But from my estimation, hes a corner OF. We'd have to put Soriano in CF (which im fine with), but I'm not sure Hendry is fine with that. Think lee would take a slight discount (but with an extra year or two) to play here?
  11. He'd be a good player to have on the bench if we would be trading izturis or eyre for him. Other than that, no.....
  12. We'll probably know by tommorow at the press conference, but from what Kaplan and other beat writers/analysts its looking like 5 years/85M with 3 option years at 17M each, or it could be 6 years/98M with 2 options years for 19M each.
  13. Soriano to Cubs, 8 years/135 million. Don't forget 2-3 of those years are options. Don't give him a heart attack now.
  14. Let's say Drew were to end up with the Angels or Orioles, and the Cubs sign Lugo. Do you think Boston would be interested in a deal for Jacque, Cesar and one of the 2 relievers? That's around $13-14M in payroll, maybe the Cubs would have to pick up $3M. Soriano to RF, Murton in LF. Then the Cubs could trade Barrett and a few pitching prospects to Toronto for Wells. who would we take back in that deal with Boston though? I really like Willy Mo Pena as a bat off the bench. Or are you talking about a deal for Manny? I'd like Barrett, Marshall, and Marmol for Wells. Then sign Zaun to play Catcher. You'd have this lineup Soriano RF Theriot SS Lee 1B Ramirez 3B Wells CF Murton LF Derosa 2B Zaun C
  15. Count me in for that trade bigtime, other than Wuertz plz. We need him. Marshall, Ohman and Izturis though, happily! Don't forget, Ohman + Izturis = $5MM, I believe Westbrook gets $6MM in 07, so the Cubs would only take on a mere $1MM in payroll in this hypothetical deal to get themselves a bona fide #3/4 starter, in this market that would be a home run. Theriot can easily play SS--and with much better offense--than Izturis. Or if they must, the Cubs could always sign Lugo or.....trade for Tejada? OK, now I'm hallucinating. actually Westbrook would be getting 5M and some change for 2007 after arbaration. So it's basically a wash. The deal I had heard though was Jones, Izturis, and Ohman or Westbrook though. I could be wrong.
  16. That gives us at least 15 mil to work with, possibly 25 mil if the spending limit is raised if we are targeting another marquee FA. Also, Jones, Izturis, Eyre, and Dempster could all be moved, seperately or invidually. If we moved 2 of them, we'd clear about 8-10 mil in payroll, possibly putting us back in the Drew sweepstakes
  17. WAH-WAH WEE-WAH! VERY NICE! AH LIKE! :D This is a great move by Hendry if he's planning on winning in the next year or so. And if the contract is really 5/84 with 3 option years (hopefully at least 2 of them are team/mutual), then this is a deal for sure. I'd venture to guess that this deal is also heavy on the backloaded side, something like this Alfonso Soriano 2007 - 14M 2008 - 17M 2009 - 17M 2010 - 18M 2011 - 18M 2012 - (17M Option) (10M Buyout) 2013 - (17M Option) (5M Buyout) 2014 - (17M Option) (5M Buyout) That's really not all that bad. I would rather Hendry had spent this money on Beltran, but Soriano is a big time free agent, probably the best one we've ever signed (not saying much but still). Let's look at how this contract contrasts with the long term contract's we're already on the hook for Derek Lee 2007 - 13M 2008 - 13M 2009 - 13M 2010 - 13M Aramis Ramirez 2007 - 14M 2008 - 15M 2009 - 15M 2010 - 15M 2011 - 16M So for these 3 players, we will be shelling out an average of 43 mil for the next 4 years. All with NTC's for that amount of time. Add in a hopeful Zambrano contract worth around 10-15 mil a year, and youd be paying upwards of 60 mil for a core of 4 players.
