this contract is really insane IMO. If you're going to pay 20 million for someone, then he better be a 5-tool monster who plays great defense. Ok he plays an elite position, but in my honest opinion, he isn't the top CF in the game. I won't argue that he isn't top notch in the field, if not arguably the best. But his bat is lacking when it comes to power hitting. I'd be way more comfortable giving someone like Grady Sizemore that kind of contract, who is the premier offensive CF in the game from my perspective. He's also almost 10 years younger. Does anybody believe Ichiro is going to be as good as he is now at age 38?

Another reason I want him: totally unafraid to try something new, something different, something better. the mere fact that he could be involved in the philosophy of the club, instead of just business and financial restrictions would instantly make him one of the better owners in this league. I can only think of one guy who is that involved with the team, and his team doesn't get alot of wins for as much money as he puts in ;).

We're not going to get him for a couple mediocre prospects and I would be fine dealing one of our soft-tossing lefties for a huge left-handed bat. Yes it would create somewhat of a hole in the 5 spot, but most other teams have that same hole. but creating a hole to fix another is lateral progression. If we had someone who was near ML-ready even to take the reins over the 5th starter spot I'd be fine with moving Marshall, but since Dempster would be the best canidate when he gets back, I'd rather not go down that path. gaining Griffey closes a bigger hole than losing Marshall will create maybe, but when you combine the fact that you can get Dunn without giving up Marshall possibly, then Griffey becomes a less attractive option.

Well i wasn't completely of the opinion that you were against adding minor league talent. its just that with the way you worded your post, giving no explanation other than just "no".

I think once we sort out the mess that is the depth chart, then we can bring up Pie and start to give him regular playing time. IMO, once we see a trade for a decent regular at OF, or C (or if soto starts producing consitently) then we can plug Pie in the lineup so that we can afford his struggles. Right now, Floyd IMO is pretty much a vs. righty only guy. Find a platoon partner for him (since pagan isn't to good against lefties either) that can play good defense, and then stick Pie in CF. My hope though is we get Dunn or Griffey, and after myriad of roster moves, the 25-man works out as follows. C - Soto, Bowen IF - Lee, Ramirez, Derosa, Theriot, Fontenot, Ward, Cedeno OF - Soriano, , Pie, Floyd, Pagan SP - Zambrano, Hill, Lilly, Marquis, Marshall RP - Wuertz, Marmol, Dempster, Ohman, Eyre, Howry im hoping Dunn is the acquisition, since Griffey might cost us Marshall, and create a hole in the rotation. I don't know how big a deal 600 is. Over the next three years about 125 major leaguers will hit their 500th or 600th home run. Anyway, this is Ken Griffey Jr that we're talking about. And these are the Cubs. Anything that can go wrong, does. I'd give him about three innings before completely shredding his hamstring and being done for the year. ummm, what? There are 18 active players that have 325 or more home runs, so if you assume a 50 hr pace in 3 1/2 seasons, that is the line that im drawing. Of those 18, 15 are over the age of 35. of the 15 who are over the age of 35, 7 are not realistically going to get to 500, in 3 years, or ever (retirement). so of the 11 who aren't too old, or to far away the list of active home run leaders: Bonds - 751 Sosa - 602 Griffey Jr. - 586 F. Thomas - 501 A-Rod - 495 J. Thome - 487 M. Ramirez - 481 G. Sheffield - 476 C. Delgado - 421 C. Jones - 372 A. Jones - 357 and since you can take off Bonds, Sosa, and Griffey Jr. (since we're comparing him), and Thomas (since he obviously wont make it to 600), you're left with 7 players. And of those 7, only 4 are a lock to make it to 500 in the next 3 years). Only a few players (thome, a-rod, and manram) are going to get a good shot at 600 in the next 3 years. And when you factor in only 5 people have gotten to 600, the event will still be special.

Honestly. Could you imagine what kind of attention that would draw the game? Of course, mlb doesn't care. they're too busy taking down video highlights off youtube. Just look at how much attention it brought MLB in 2003 when the Cubs and Red Sox each made their respective LCS's. And how many of those people didn't hang around to watch the Yankees and Marlins. and how many would have if the red sox and cubs had matched up god i just passed out because of how much media coverage a matchup like that would have gotten i mean seriously. WOW.

i think there is some hope that comes with this. Cuban is a very determined guy that I don't think will be content with a denial by the mlb when he has the highest bid.

I saw it on the first night and it was a disaster! They show stopped 4 times with tech problems. It's gotten much better since then. For a while I kinda felt like I was inside John, Paul, George and Ringo's minds while they wrote some of the songs. i saw it a week ago, and felt the same way!

Strictly as a player, you're right. But for being a player + putting butts in Safeco's seats, he might be worth it. im not convinced the + putting butts in the seats makes up the differance between how much he is really worth and 20 million, especially when u figur that when (not if) he declines near the end of the deal, he wont be putting butts in seats anymore, and will just be another albatross.

i would argue that you need a CAT scan. To say connect offensive production to the position a player plays deciding what he should be able to do is not only stupid, it's downright a complete logical nightmare. Im going to say this one time and only one time: "OFFENSE AND DEFENSE ARE TWO DIFFERENT THINGS. TO CONNECT THEM IS TO BE STUPID." You get the best hitter you can get at the position and that's the answer for EVERY position. Whether the offense comes from SLG or OBP makes no difference. 1. calm down with the insulting posts. Not making friends quickly that way. 2. The idea that you connect offensive production to the position a player plays is largely because of the fact the kind of defensive player you are as far as physical tools usually impact the kind of offensive player you are. For example, shortstop is not really a position loaded with power players (only 6 players with SLG % near or over .475). Since it is more likely that you are one of the other 26 teams with light hitting SS's, youre going to want them to be OBP machines, or base running specialists that can field at an above average or better level. There's a reason that Miguel Cabrera came up as a shortstop only to be switched to 3B (generally a power hitting position)

Marshall and Jones for Griffey? Assuming we can get them to bite that Marshall is a hugely valuable young pitcher with some upside, and tell them that to offset Jr.'s salay, they have to take JJ, i think we have a good deal here. hopefully by the time of this deal, angel is ready to come back. Truth be told, I'd rather Griffey. 1st off, hes a rental no doubt if we aquire Dunn. Were gonna have enough trouble signing Z. 2ndly, Dunn in right would be a disaster, and I like keeping Sori in left. You can stick Griffey anywhere. 3rdly, I like Griffey's line of 291 .391 .575 over Dunn's line of .259 .349 .549. With valentin, this lineup would be unbelievably good at scoring runs. Z is as loveable as it gets really. So I would take that bet.

if you want Salty, your going to need to trade a valuable young pitcher. Salty for Hill and Murton would be the deal. I'd probably do it.

Marshall does not deserve it over Z. Marshall is better skill wise and stat wise hah, you must be out of your mind...do you really think marshall has better skills than Z? Marshall is way more consistent and and has way more control, something z seemingly can't buy Marshall has been in the majors for about a year-4/5 of a season last year, and 1/5 of a season this year. Only the 1/5 of the season this year has been good-I'm not sure how you can call him consistent yet. Z is the only pitcher in the major leagues to be in the top 15 of ERA every year for the last 4-how much more consistent can you get than that? With the way he's pitching lately, he could make it 5 in a row. i didn't say marshall was consistent i said he's more consistent than z And like I said, Z has been one of the most consistent pitchers in the major leagues the last 4 years. He gives you almost the same production every single year. except this one i suppose No, not except this one. Z has had 1 bad month, 1 shaky month, and 1 month were he was one of the best pitchers in baseball. And since his best month was the most recent one, you would be led to believe hes figured it out, and will return to being a top 5 pitcher in baseball. what are you smoking man, or are you just looking for an argument that you are clearly wrong on?

this is so incredibly lame of the MLB if true. We better hope Z REALLY loves the cubs (as it seems he does) and is patient with us to allow the sale to go through so we can sign him.

I wouldn't think to hard about it since it probably won't happen, but I could see Lee getting booted off since he was the player vote.

Source? no source, just speculation. Top 3 NL home run hitters, and I figure Bonds would get an invite because of being a hometown player. those are at least how I expect them to be selected, id guess maybe bonds and griffey could drop out. I could also see howard getting an invite to defend his title (and he is #5 in the NL in HR)
