  1. Why do they do that? I never understood why the refs spend so much time looking like they are trying to fake guys out. Want to make sure no one is anticipating the drop. If you start a little early you're most likely going to win the draw. Yeah, but what's the point? The shenanigans on faceoffs are such a boring waste of time from an otherwise exciting non-stop moving sport. I agree with you. It seems a lot of times like an ego-boost for some refs. "You're not going to wait for me, get out of here because I am in control of the game.' I'm a fan of the street hockey faceoff with the triple stick tap myself.

  3. Awesome. Isn't that a pretty small kid? I'm not an expert, but I usually see 7-9 lbs. Unfortunately, early reports indicate that the child may have a partially torn labrum. He will see Dr. James Andrews next week.
  4. A little off topic, but I'm doing a sports event audit, and I'm supposed to critique/explain the concessions at the Hawks game. What kind of food do they have and how are the prices? Is there anything else that stands out that makes the experience extremely good/bad?
  5. Lost in the excitement of the Bears, the Hawks won again...improving their record to 3-2. Did anyone watch the game?
  6. Holy crap hahahahaha. I'm jealous now that I didn't go to a bar now. Even though its Rams and Chiefs country down here, there's plenty of Bears fans and I'm sure they were going nuts at the bars. It's official, I'm wearing my Urlacher jersey on campus tomorrow now. It was pandemonium down here after the game...not only the yelling on the floor and the jumping up and down, but after the game, at least 150-200 students went outside the dorms and started chanting "6 and 0" and "We're going to the Super Bowl." Pissed me off pretty good :x I watched it at my buddies apt. but people were sliding in the wet grass/mud when I walked home. I actually left after Grossman threw his last pick. When I got outside in the rain they were leaning over the balcony screaming at me to come back. We definately caused a commotion during that punt return as well.
  7. After watching the highlights from yesterday's game...one thing that bugs me about the new announcer is that he always says "He shoots...he scores!" There are times he can just say "He scores!" we're going to know he obviously took a shot. I see the puck go in and seconds later I hear "He shoots!" it annoys me. /end rant
  8. I love hockey, and I love the Hawks. If they weren't run so poorly, I would be even more obsessed. I really just wish Wirtz would stop being such a moron and put the home games on TV. I can't watch half of my team's game, what kind of BS is that. It sure as hell doesn't make me want to go to the game either. Listen Billy, maybe more people would come to the games if you let them see the product. I went to the home opener and there was a pretty good crowd, unfortunately I was disappointed in the non-game experience. I don't really care when they do to keep fans interested, because I'm just there for the game. However, they have like a 5+ minute feature on the organ player where they just show him playing the organ. Show me some highlights from around the league, give me something. I really think by making the team more visible, they could start drawing better. They do have really expensive tickets, like any NHL team, but they actually are towards the bottom in average ticket price I think. I know they've got $10 seats, and it's a pretty good view IMO. By the way, did anyone see that hit Phaneuf put on last night? Wow.
  9. I have to say this would have been a little annoying, but we've talked about stuff like this in my Sports Management class, and it's bound to happen. I'm sure there will be ads on uniforms before it's all said and done. If this was offered to the Cubs and they refused I would be upset. It's a 4 minute difference that has no bearing on the game whatsoever, and brings in what I think has got to be a pretty good chunk of change. If that chunk of change goes into making the product (stadium, experience, players) better, than I'm all for it.
  10. Why would you trade anything for him though? He's not worth the money, let alone any players on top of that.
  11. I hate that stupid clock stops at the first down rule...Illini about to lose on a FG
  12. Ok, but what was the point of saying that managers can't turn a team of scrubs into a .500 ballclub in the Marlins weren't scrubs? Ever heard of Justin Verlander, Ryan Zimmerman and tons of other players I'm too lazy to look up? They never played AAA. In fact, many of them were top talent. I remember many people on this board especially praising Florida's moves because they got so many highly touted prospects. I disagree that talent doesn't get you anywhere without direction, just look at Matt Murton and Rich Hill. Do you think Dusty had anything to do with their success? Again, I don't think anyone is denying him credit. I wouldn't be upset if Girardi became the manager of the Cubs. I am just skeptical that the reason the Marlins had a solid season was because of Joe's managing. The KC Royals had a pretty bad team in 2003, but Tony Pena led them to a 83-79 record in his first full year as manager. One year doesn't make a good manager.
  13. Take a look at that roster. A lot of those guys were at AA last season and didn't figure to be ML ready by anyone's imagination outside the Marlins org. Geez, even prospects like Hanley Ramirez had their stock drop substantially the previous season. Someone ironed out the normal rookie ups and downs. That's the coaching staff. Girardi specifically? I have no idea, but he ran the dugout. People who don't like Girardi don't want to give credit where credit is due. How many managers won 50% of their games with a team full of scrubs (refering to hypothetical scenario, not the '06 Marlins)? This isn't Major League with Pedro Cerano and Wild Thing Vaughn. And many of them were top prospects from around the league. Many of these top prospects skip AAA anyway. In addition, there was no Pedro Cerano or Rick Vaughn, but they might have been able to compete in the horrible NL this year.
  14. Just because a team had a $15 mil payroll doesn't mean they had no talent. According to ESPN Miguel Cabrera's salary was $472,000. I'd say he's pretty darn good. They were young, yes...I will give you that. The problem is people here are acting like the team was horrible. Yes, I like Girardi and I think he did a pretty darn good job with a bunch of kids, most of them had very solid years. However, just because they aren't getting paid a lot doesn't mean the talent isn't there. I think it is pretty well known that the majority of major leaguers are underpaid until they hit free agency, at which point they become overpaid. Salary is not the see all end all that many of Girardi's supporters are making it.
  15. Congrats UMFan, I tried to keep it close, but you ran away with it.
  16. I'd throw the name out Girardi out there but unfortunetly I'm the only one on the board who thinks Joe deserves credit for fostering the development of the young players down there, and bringing out their "talents" So IMO, there are managers that can bring out the best in players. Joe is one. Brenly I see as a guy who needs established talented vets to succeed. You keep trying to take the stance that Girardi was able to get the most out of a bunch of rookies who were very talented, but Brenly only can win with a good team of veterans. If that's the case, which type of team do you see the Cubs fielding in the future? One with a bunch of rookies, or one assembled to win? I don't see this team starting from scratch any time soon.
  17. I'm going to tune into every minute of this. It should be amazing. Who will he be teamed up with? Morgan please?
  18. Crowley was a team VP before becoming president, while Freeman works under Alderson who knows a thing or 2 about the game. Dombrowski helped build some powerhouses in Montreal in the early 90's Well that leaves many more that haven't had baseball experience doesn't it?
  19. When is this "Dusty Announcement" supposed to take place?
  20. Well said. I miss Jeff Beukebum (sp?) what a great hockey name.
  21. That's what worries me is that this and Pierre would be Hendry's big "free agent" signings. I don't doubt it, but just shoot me if it's so. Hendry's gotta feel like his job is on the line though. My guess is he resigns A-Ram, locks up Zambrano & Barrett, signs Pierre (3/20), W. Miller (1/6), Wood (1/6), Suppan and a bat like Craig Wilson. In other words, woefully short of turning this into a contending team. A Pierre signing is the first domino. After slappy is signed, the only way to save the off season is a blockbuster deal for Tejada or Cabrera. CFP I could see Pierre going for that much. It would be stupid, but I can see it. I can't see (nor do I want to see) Wood or Miller getting 6 mil with the type of injury concerns they both have.
  22. According to Yahoo, Brian Giles is going to hit leadoff next year. It seems a little odd to me to announce this now, but at least they recognize that his high OBP and decreasing power is suited for the top of the order. However, Yahoo failed to mention that his biggest asset is his high OBP, instead focusing on the fact that he's not fast, making him an odd choice.
  23. Talk about kicking a man when he's down.
  24. Can I ask how this happened? Or do they mean to the right side?
  25. Interception by Illinois on the 1 yard line. Wow on 0-0 in the second quarter. Then interception by Iowa, but it was overturned, still Illini ball.
