  1. Exactly (see my post above). It didn't sound like he was breaking any news there; it sounds like he made an off-the-cuff remark that he should have clarified.
  2. Could this mean - perish the thought - that the "Greek God of Walks" isn't as good as advertised :?: :!:
  3. Good for him. Good luck backing up Lorretta and co., Bobby.
  4. The Dead Horse called and he wants you to stop beating him! Don't you all think there'd be some other confirmation of this thing if its true? Just listedned to some Gammons audio re the Marlins: Pierre "likely" to go, "may be the Cubs, I don't know." BJ Ryan likely to go the Phils or Mets depending on what Wagner does. "Bobby Howry's getting 12 million from the Cubs." Could this mean he's getting offered that much?
  5. You don't win at baseball by trading away your stars. Whether or not Pie's a future star is up to Hendry and Co. to evaluate, and I do think they've done a pretty good job at evaluating who to trade and who not -- outside of Willis, of course. And Sisco. They definately should've protected Andy on the 40-man in hindsight, but they didn't trade him away, and I have my doubts that he'll turn into a star. I agree with what you are saying, but I think that you have to trade some of these guys in order to win, otherwise most of them will see their values go down. Sisco and Cruz are good examples. Sisco had a terrible year in 04' so we exposed him; we exposed Cruz for too long and got almost nothing in return.
  6. Bah - you beat me to it. Great deal for the Sox. Gotta trade those chips while they have value. Are you watching, Mr. Hendry?!
  7. I think it might be a little higher, but I agree with the sentiment.
  8. Double post (the second one has a couple of edits though)
  9. thats sounds so easy but who to keep & who to trade? how many guys were above willis on the list when the cubs traded him? it's always a gamble whenever a player with alot of talent is traded. hill could be the next willis or the next lance dickson (now my age is showing). My age shows too: I was in attendance for Lance Dickson's first ML start vs. the Houston Astros. He stunk. The point isn't that some of the guys you trade don't wind up being good ML players, its that the vast majority will not, and therefore they should be dealt while their value is highest. Exhibit A is Juan Cruz; we just waited too long. And in response to 1908's post, I agree that those blocks are not necessarily in place, but here is a start: SP: Prior IF: Ramirez (or if you prefer, Lee, but I think ARam b/c he is a bit younger) and maybe Cedeno? OF: Murton Bullpen: ? C: Barrett Now, I will grant you that we developed only of those three, so we have a ways to go. But, like I said, its a start.

  11. One of my problems w/ Hendry has been that, while he has done a good job stockpiling minor league talent, he has allowed much of it to go stale. In other words, we all know that 90% of more of these guys won't make it (okay may be a little less, but then most who do get to the Bigs won't make any significant impact). Thus, I would prefer that he trade a few of them to get some established ML talent. Follow the Yankees model of the early to mid 90s: keep 4 or so cornerstone players who you developed in your system, and deal the rest for established talent.
  12. I think you're underestimating how impressive a 903 OPS for a 20-year-old at AA is. Its a good job, and I don't think anyone is doubting his value. My point is that he has nothing on the ML-level, and we (IMO) want to win now. Abreu has at least 3 very good years left. Pie could some day be Abreu, but we just don't know. If the deal were Pie and Hill for Abreu, count me in.
  13. LMAO...I didn't know TB claimed him in the expansion draft, then promptly traded him to Philly for....Kevin Stocker....That's about on par with the Lou Brock trade for us. Wow. That is pretty brutal. And so out of character for the D-Rays! I think at that same time they were busy getting Greg Vaughn, Canseco, and Castilla.
  14. I am talking straight production. And BTW, for those of you interested, guess who baseballreference.com says has the most similar stats to Abreu (in the history of baseball)...
  15. I've probably missed it, but based on your stance on a couple other players, I have to ask... who exactly DO you want? Adam Dunn Wilkerson Bradley Marcus Giles Coco Crisp pitchers: zito/burnett/beckett (i.e. another front line starter) howry I realize we're probably not going to get any of these players. So you would rather have Wilkerson, Bradley or Crisp over Abreu? I think this is proof that some players gain momentum on this bd without really deserving it. Here's a Wilkerson v. Abreu comparison: http://www.baseballreference.com/a/abreubo01.shtml http://www.baseballreference.com/w/wilkebr01.shtml For those of you who don't feel like opening the links: Abreu's OBP has been over .400 six of the last seven years. Wilkerson's career high OBP is .380, and that was in 2003.
  16. I hope what was said earlier is true; that JH is waiting in the weeds b/c he thinks Abreu (or Dunn?) will be avilable at the GM meetings. Thus, why sign a guy who is that much older to a multi-year deal? Makes sense...if that is in fact the case.
  17. Sheff only has one year left on his deal, so the risk isn't as great as it is with Giles. He's going to want an extension to shut him up. Nah, just give extra cash and a condo in Lincoln Park.
  18. I personally like Sheff as a better option than Giles based on the fact that he has one year left on his deal. True, we'd have to give up a couple of players to get him, but I think that risk is worth taking when you compare the risk of giving Giles a multi-year deal. I also think that his "antics" have been emphasized in NY b/c, well, its NY. The same could be said for when he was in LA. I heard very little about him while he was in Atl. I dunno if Chi. compares to NY and LA. I think its some where in the middle, though recently it seems to be creeping closer... Anyway, check out this production: http://www.baseball-reference.com/s/sheffga01.shtml
  19. I don't think Sheff would drop balls on purpose. He wants to win. On the other hand, I'd rather not have a disgruntled Sheff. In spite of Sheff's problems, they have never gotten in the way of winning. Exactly. Who cares if the rest of the team thinks he's a grumpy jacka**. "Chemistry" doesn't really exist; its a misnomer; not quantifiable. Most of the team thought Sammy was a jacka** at the end, and they won plenty. I would take Sheff in spite of the fact that, based on his actions, I think he's an egomaniac and a liar (paraphrase: "Bonds gave me the stuff to rub on my leg but I didn't ask or know what it was.". )
  20. I think power is overrated. That lineup would score runs. Runs win baseball games. I agree with that. I always look back to the "go-go" Cards of the mid-80s. The only guy who hit more than 15 Dongs on that team was the universally beloved Jack Clark. They had Oz, Coleman, McGee, Herr, etc. High-OBP team. Here is the 85' team: http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/STL/1985.shtml[/url]
  21. The Dodgers received Penny in the trade, and he was the principle target. Choi was a throw in. The Marlins were dumping salary, they did not target Choi. I either case they were not targeting Choi, it just worked out that way. My point is that teams didn't trade Choi to get rid of him. He was dealt in order to get valuable players. Yeah, but you are mischaracterizing his role in those deals.
  22. Just to continue my mini-rant, here are Nunez's career stats. They are worse than Neifi's, that is, until he became a Cardinal: http://www.baseballreference.com/n/nunezab01.shtml Here's some more fun. So Taguchi, who according to baseballreference.com, compares favorably with the legendary Bruce Aven and the immortal Johnny Dickshot (couldn't help but point that out): http://www.baseball-reference.com/t/tagucso01.shtml And finally, exhibit C, Mr. Eckstein, who prior to this past season, posted an OBP over .340 just once: http://www.baseball-reference.com/e/eckstda01.shtml I say Jocketty is lucky. Nunez could easily have been Macias; Eckstein could easily have been avg.; and did anyone else realize just how old Taguchi is?!
  23. Fliers are fliers. Luck is luck. There was no way - based on objective statistics - for Jocketty to have known that the scrubs he signed would be better than the ones Hendry signed. Scrubs are scrubs (just ask Bruce Levine), and since the Cards' scrubs outplayed the Cubs scrubs' by a mile, I look into the dugout for an explanation.
