  1. And Berman's nickname for him is pretty good: Bert "Be Home" Blyleven
  2. I don't think Tim was comparing the two players abilities, but rather how far of a regression each made. Burrell was horrible that year. But, he came back from it. And he did it with the same club. Whether Patterson could do the same is still in question. Point well taken, though I do think we have to consider the strong possibility that CPatt and Burrell are two different people, and thus CPatt may have been less able than Burrell to deal with the booing and pressure.
  3. I really like the idea of Cedeno and Lugo up the middle, especially since it sends He Who Must Not Be Named to his proper position, the bench. In light of that and the rumored Marte swap, would you do Hill for Lugo?
  4. Huh? Who is Lidge going to close games for with the O's? And Taveras' stats are not good: http://www.baseballreference.com/t/taverwi01.shtml
  5. Yeah, except Pie's fate is unknown at this point and he had a solid season in AA last year, ifmemory serves. So you are guessing, right?
  6. I also liked Rogers' column, but not b/c it ripped the Cubs. I liked it b/c it was balanced. It assessed blame on both parties, and rightfully so. Someone should edit the title of this thread to reflect that.
  7. Good luck Corey; you could'ah been a conten-dah!
  8. For: Minor league pitcher Minor league infielder Names TBA in next 30 minutes
  9. We may have meant two different things. My point was that when Choi and Hill were coming up in the Cubs org., they were viewed as our future everyday 1B and 2B, and would team with Montanez and Kelton by 2004 or 2005.
  10. Look at who we gave up for those "kids", Mulholland and Hernandez. Not exactly world-beaters. So getting Q, Bowie and NATION, for those two baseball bums was more then what the Cubs could have hoped for. I forgot that we acquired "Alien" Nation in that deal. Good call.
  11. To be fair, Bowie and Quevedo came over from the Braves system, and it looked like a good deal at the time.
  12. There hasn't been one since Doug Glanville. Eric Hinske, to a degree. Have to throw Sisco's name out there too in that case. Not a position player.
  13. That's really not an argument in favor of Hendry. Hill and Choi were tagged as utility and platoon players, respectively. Also, please factor in that the players that those 2 were benched for weren;t exactly all star producers. That is not true.
  14. What's wrong with DePodesta? Failed to win a world series in one full year? On the flip-side, what did DePo do that makes him so valuable? He had one year! How could you possibly judge him in one year? He can stand pretty proudly on his time with the A's however. When was he in charge with the A's? Look, I am not trying to turn this into a DePo thread, but what proof is there that he is a good GM?
  15. What's wrong with DePodesta? Failed to win a world series in one full year? On the flip-side, what did DePo do that makes him so valuable?
  16. I like the fact that they are all AL teams! Any guesses on who the M's, Sox and/or Rangers might be offering?
  17. Understood, but that wasn't what I meant. Bruce is never going to tell us who those sources are, but those sources provide him with his info. Thus, I guess what I am asking is whether Bruce's info re lineups and depth charts is trustworthy, in your (or anyone else's) opinion.
  18. What about Choi for Lee? Signing Walker? (Although his current actions aren't good) Damian Miller for Michael Barrett? Certainly not his best moves, but I don't think these are the worst moves ever. Pierre and Jones have shown ability in the past; again, they aren't great, but not the end of the world either. I'd say this is Baker's fault. Macias is a decent 25th man on a team, but Baker didn't use him properly. Why is Augie playing backup shortstop for Iowa such a problem? Robert Novoa, Scott Moore and Bo Flowers. Not a bad coup at all. I'll give you this one, although very few people said that when he was originially signed. I'll give you this one too. Hendry's biggest fault so far has not been getting Baker off the team. He's made some other not so great moves (Remmy, Bellhorn for Hernendez, etc...) but I don't think he's a bad GM. I'd put him in the middle of the pack as far as GM's go. Agree, though I admit that I am more frustrated with him this offseason than ever before.
  19. I'm married so I'm used to people who make up their minds and then change it two weeks (make that five minutes) later. Here here. And its twice as bad when you have (a) kid(s).
  20. And the Giants are one Bonds injury from being horrible. And the Mets are one Pedro injury...yadda yadda yadda do you just find every one of my posts and then make a condescending comment about it or what? and the giants were terrible w/o bonds. they're really not that good with him. and the mets have a hell of a lot more on that team if they lose pedro (beltran, floyd, wagner, reyes, delgado, wright) than the cubs do if they lose lee. that's just a laughable comparison. and for those who want to know where all the money's going, look no further than to the money the cubs have thrown at the (mediocre) bullpen from 2004-2006. No, but I found that comment to be without merit for the reasons stated earlier by CubFaninCA.
  21. Bruce said the Cubs don't see Neifi as an everyday player and project Cedeno as a starter, but the Cubs have a history of spreading disinformation. Don't forget, Hendry talked up Dubois as a potential ROY when the Cubs' actual plan was to stick Dubois with the short and greasy end of a platoon, which of course would leave him zero chance at the ROY. Simply put, Hendry shoved a steaming load of bullcrap down the public's collective throat. Stuff like that doesn't do much for the Cubs' credibility. Bruce will give us the straight dope on what he hears, but if the Cubs lie to him he will still be giving out bad info, through no fault of his own. Who are the Cubs that are saying this to Bruce....Hendry or Baker? I really doubt it's Baker that has been saying that and he is the one that fills out the lineup card. I have raised that question myself. Bruce does occasionally say "the Cubs" told him this or that. I always want to know specifically who said what, because "the Cubs" is too vague when the team has a history of giving out contradictory messages. Of course Bruce or any other reporter can't always name his sources, so we are left wondering. Just clarifying - are you now saying that, b/c Miles' sources are within the Cubs org. that nothing Miles reports to us can be believed? May be its just wishful thinking, but when Bruce said the Cubs view Neifi as a backup (and expensive one at that), I believed him. And Paul Sullivan backed that up. The only one reporting otherwise has been Kiley, to the best of my recollection.
  22. let me know when that happens. Cory Koskie is the difference maker, eh? :pukel: are you quoting the wrong post? where did i say that? the brewers were better than the cubs before they signed koskie...and they still are. Well, its the move that lead to this convo. For the record, your are saying that a team with a washed up 3B (Koskie), three rookies / rookie-like players in the rest of the IF, Lee (who has been savaged on this bd as overrated, and rightfully so), Clark (who played way over his station last season), and Jenkins (who is injured as much as he isn't) is definitively better than the Cubs?
