  1. Find me a team that has had (relatively) the same amount of serious injuries to key players as the Cubs have had and used their farm systems to keep them on top. Last year's Braves are the only team I can think of that comes close, except that their pitchers were healthy all year, IIRC.
  2. In St. Louis's defense, everybody gets fleeced by Billy Beane in his trades. It's not really something to be surprised about. Yeah, we really got hosed in that Miller for Barret deal. Not.
  3. You don't mind the two years? I don't b/c I like veteran power off the bench, just asking if you do. Clarks nos. this year: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=5513 Career: http://www.baseballreference.com/c/clarkto02.shtml I did not realize he had so many HRs last year. Having him would be pretty great, especially as a bench guy when Lee gets back. I cannot imagine that the D-Backs would want the sun, moon and stars for him either.
  4. May be not. But your team has survived without some of its best players for extended periods. There is no reason we cannot do the same. I have said it several times since Wed.: The way they won that game in L.A. (coming back after Lee got hurt) is a very good sign.
  5. No excuses. He says that now, but he'll use it and anything else as an excuse if we lose. We'll see, but he's been a different guy so far this season, and last year's Cubs would have folded up their tents after wathcing their best player get hurt like that. This team came back; its a good sign.
  6. Call me crazy, but I like what Dusty said here: No excuses.
  7. I really don't think this will increase Neifi's PT, b/c I really doubt that JH sees Walk as a long-term option at 1B. I could be wrong. I'd like to see them bring up Sing.
  8. http://blogs.starwars.com/static/img/image-selector/full/original-trilogy/episode-vi/11.jpg Can someone with skills put Lee's head on here?
  9. Well spoken (written).
  10. It was that way until the Neifi defenders tried to change the tone. Nice. You are a guy, IIRC, who (rightfully) criticizes posters for generalizing or labeling others as "moneyballers". Way to fight fire with fire.
  11. Very much agree. As noted above, they are 16th in team OBP in the NL, yet they are 5 games over .500. With teh way ARam and Jones have played, this is good sign. If those two play well in DLee's absence, we might just survive this.
  12. these comparisons DO NOT WORK. dlee is orders of magnitude more important to the cubs than players like rolen or chipper jones are to their respective clubs. they can survive without those players for extended periods of time. this club is going to have a lot of difficulty doing so. Not sure why the caps were necessary to drive home your point. In any case, I was only trying to spin this into a (possible) positive light, particulalry in light of the way in which the team fought back last night after Lee got hurt. Tha was very encoraging, IMO.
  13. Does this remind anyone of last year's Braves? Chipper got hurt and the national media threw in the towel. They dipped into their minor leagues, Andruw had a huge year, they held it together, and did what they always do. IMO, ARam has chance to establish himself as the best 3B in the League if he can get hot and carry this team the way A. Jones did last year, and guys like Murton and Cedeno could become the Francour of this year. The Cubs really have a chance to show us something here. I was impressed that they did not fold up the tents last night.
  14. Agreed. You're replacing Lee, 2005's most productive offensive player, with a combination of Neifi Perez, John Mabry, and Jerry Hairston. On a team that, going into last night, had the worst team-OBP in the NL.
  15. I fell asleep in the 4th or 5th; woke up and went to the gym before work this morning, and got to the cardio room where the first thing (literally) that I saw was Furcal banging into Lee. I stood with my hands on my head, jaw dropped, right through the end of the highlight where they showed the Cubs' comeback (which was very nice, BTW). I went home still in shock. I really hope this doesn't linger more than a week or two.
  16. That's exactly the lineup I'd put out there. Other than flipping Jones and Murton, agreed.
  17. IIRC, it was just before the start of play in the bottom of the 3rd?
  18. Len: I was doing some work in front of the t.v., heard you give the shoutout; dropped my pen; flipped open my laptop; and found that the excitement of it all crashed the site! You rock Len! Thanks for the excitement!!!
  19. 4 stolen bases though! Can't make fun of Beltre, kept him in a keeper league thinking he would rebound this year. Not a good idea. At least I picked up Melvin Mora for insurance. he sure seems like the classic "does it for the $" guy.
  20. Yes - the game and Len....and your sig. Your sig is great.
  21. It would be very sad indeed if Greg finishes as he has started and thus prices himself off the team. He's as reliable as any pitcher 15 years younger.
  22. That's a pretty darned good pick. I didn't look through the whole thread, but along these lines, how about Larry Anderson for Jeff Bagwell?
  23. Happy B-Day Bruce. Thanks for being part of this community.
  24. I like Diaz but I don't think he is a difference maker. He is also a guy without a position. They've tried him everywhere and he has stunk it up in the field. I do think he is a Chicagoan though. Isn't he the guy that hit the killer HR against us in 2004 late in the year? The one that tied the game in the bottom of the ninth? In mid-September in Shea off of LaTroy? Yeah, that's him. It was a Saturday afternoon game on FOX. I was at that game. I am still recovering.
  25. He's go stud written all over him; and from what I have read, the ladies in NYC agree. http://www.baseballreference.com/w/wrighda03.shtml .388 OBP at age 22. Looks like another Pujols.
