  1. Yet more Baker stupidty, in response to the Cardinals successful execution of a Suicide Squeeze, from today's online Tribune: "They have the personnel to do it," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said. "And they do it against guys who throw strikes. It's one of their things." What kind of personnel would that be Dusty? Baseball players?
  2. Here's to hoping the Astros lose tonight, no clinching party for the Cards at Wrigley Field this weekend! Besides some of Patterson' at-bats is there a worse baseball sight than seeing the incongruous blob Ray King rolling out of the Cards bullpen?
  3. I'm at work...Patterson with a hit and RBI? That must be a typing error, did anyone see this happen?
  4. 0-4 3K's, pop-up to 2b on 13 pitches...
  5. The bigger question is when or how Dusty will replace Murton with Macias? His first opportunity at a double switch despite the fact that the 8th spot made the last out and Murton' may be hitting sixth? What is it with getting Perez and or Macias in every game? Do they have some kind of appearance incentives within their contracts?
  6. 3B - 100% Rolen over Ramirez, well we can play that game to- SS - 100% Garciapparra dwarfs Eck literally, figuratively and statistically SP - 100% Prior, Wood and Zambrano collectively are >> Carpenter, Suppan and Marquis 2B - I believe that's even
  7. 2004 Williams Carpenter Morris Suppan Marquis Haren Reyes, Al Flores 2005 Carpenter Mulder Morris Marquis Suppan Reyes, Anthony Eldred Thanks, so, that's 15 starters the Cards have used over the last two years, this year alone, the Cubs have used at least 10 starters.
  8. I don't really agree that he's better than those guys... Renteria is better than Eckstein, unless you ignore the rest of their careers and focus on this year only. Cabrera's numbers are very close to Eckstein's, which makes the contract that Cabrera got from the Angels even more stunning. What a brutal move by the Angels, in all honesty. Not every player has... but many have. Womack last year, Nunez this year, Carpenter, Tavarez, there has been luck involved. But I think Jocketty has been very good at finding players (mainly veterans) who are undervalued in the free agent market. Sanders at $3M per year was a bargain. So was Grudz at $1M this year, and Suppan at around $3M, and even Eckstein at $3M is a bargain when you consider that other FA shortstops like Renteria and Cabrera got 3 times as much money. I've been saying this all along... the Cards' domination of the NL Central the last 2 years has been a combination of good management and good luck People just forget that I acknowledge the first part of that. There is a facet of the game were one cannot deny the Cards have been extremely fortunate the last two seasons - SP, their top three SP have missed how many regular season starts as compared to the Cubs?
  9. Anyone know how many SP have the Cards have used the last two seasons? I'm guessing its <= than the number of SP the Cubs have used this season.
  10. I know the Cubs are done for the Reds this but, does anyone think Valentine should have been brushed back once or twice maybe, even hit the dirt?
  11. Or hockey, the Blackhawks may actually be decent this season... Pardon my ignorance, but hockey is what? I knew I was reaching at bit... The Black Hawks are that team that are always under the Red Wings in the standings....right? May change a bit this season, Hawks went out and signed 9 FA, Nikolai Khabibulin, amongst them...
  12. Or hockey, the Blackhawks may actually be decent this season... Pardon my ignorance, but hockey is what? I knew I was reaching at bit...
  13. Or hockey, the Blackhawks may actually be decent this season...
  14. The sad truth about this mistake in the use of Mitre is we'll get a chance to see it again before the season ends.
  15. You have the numbers to back that up? Because I would argue that Mitre sucks in every capacity involving a baseball, glove and uniform Didn't he win two consecutive starts earlier this season? Pitching something like 14 consecutive shutout innings? Beyond that, you're correct, he's been terrible perhaps, I should have written something like: whatever chance Mitre has at effectiveness is as a starter. The point being he should not be used in relief.
  16. Worst tactician/pen usage in my 36 years. I can live with mistakes from time to time they'll happen but, I agree, he consistently makes the same mistakes game in and game out. There's no other word for it other than stupidity.
  17. No, no, no. The Cubs will tie the Astros for the Wild Card and lose in the 15th inning of Game 163. So how are they gonna do it? Walk in the winning run? Dramatic walkoff homer? My money is on at least one error being involved in the play. The bases would be loaded, the Cubs would be ahead by 1, and there would be a play that SHOULD be routine for the 3rd and final out that someone would screw up, and 2 runs would score to give the Astros the win. Better yet, in a key at bat the idoit will bring Mitre to serve up a gopher ball..."Dude, I didn't want to burn out Novoa, Williamson or Dempster."
  18. Whatever effectiveness Mitre brings to the Cubs is most definitely as a starter, why hasn't Baker figure that out yet?
  19. do you really think the difference between a 4th/5th place team and a world series contender is the defense at ss? No but, improved defense from 2B and SS along with Wood, Prior and Zambrano making a combined 60+ starts is...
  20. I believe Hendry is going to defensively upgrade 2B or SS or both which means Garciapparra may not be resigned. For all the good vibes Garciapparra has generated with his recent hot streak I don't believe Hendry is going to chance getting burned in 2006 as he did with Nomar this season. Add this to his diminished defensive skills and one can see Hendry going hard after Furcal. Who can blame him? Pitching and defense have worked tremendously well for the 04&05 Cards along with the 05 White Sox - that's the direction I see Hendry going for the 06 Cubs.
  21. And upon their return, Walker and Sanders, are going perform as if they haven't missed a beat, turn it on, 100%?
  22. True enough however, doing so results in a lower number of Jimmy Dives Alot ESPN highlights.
  23. That was a WS contender the Cubs faced over the last 3 games? In the word of Dr. Evil: rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrright...
  24. Bank on it, with probability 1, upon being traded from the Cubs, the light will go on and he'll become an All Star. It's as sure as Death and Taxes...
  25. Haven't we learned? If Cubs sign someone with any injury history at all it'll come back to bite them. Burnett would be a very nice addition but, put it down now, if he signs with the Cubs, he won't make it out of ST on the active roster. Of course, if he signs with the Cards, he'll be sprinkled with Magic Baseball Dust, make 30-35 starts and win 20-25 games.
