  1. That K number for Harper is surprising.
  2. Said with a New Jersey accent. Nah bro. I've still got some midwestern lingering in the accent. South Jersey is the same thing as Philly accent. North Jersey is highly varied. Where I live most people are from somewhere else. The thing that most people think of as a jersey accent is more Staten Island/Long Island. Somebody told me the other day that I had a mid-west drawl. I guess it's because I don't say "wooder" instead of water or talk about "carrying" people which means give them a car ride.
  3. Stood on his line too.
  4. The case people are trying to make for Girardi is that he's basically the opposite of Maddon in terms of handling players, "playing the game the right way" and all that old school crap that people think is somehow important. I can't see Theo going that route. I also don't see him hiring Ross right after Maddon. It would be pretty risky bringing in a guy with zero experience to replace the guy that won the WS. People will definitely have second thoughts about getting rid of Maddon if the team starts slowly next year or doesn't return to the playoffs.
  5. Why are the Bears -2.5 at home? Seems like a sucker line. As bad as the Dolphins are, +16 at home seems tempting.
  6. This seems like one of those spirit of the rule situations. If it's that close, what possible advantage could the attacker have? If the attacker doesn't have any really clear advantage then it shouldn't be off-sides.
  7. Tens of people are really enjoying the AFL live. Are the crowds usually that small?
  8. I think they will. de Haan - Murphy should be an effective shut down pairing Keith- Gus will bring some offense Seabrook- Maata may never make it out of their own end but at least they won't have to be out there as much. Last year, they had Forsling who was terrible, Dahlstrom who was inconsistent at best and Koekkuk who is a 7th D man at best. Once again, the guy that *might* be their best defenseman (Boqvist) will start the season in Rockford but at least the organization doesn't hate him like they did Jokiharu. I understand that Boqvist has a lot to learn on the defensive side of things but he could learn that in the NHL if the Hawks were willing to just not play Seabrook very much, something they just won't do because of his salary and because of what he's done for the team in the past.
  9. How many years does he have left on his contract? 4 more after this upcoming season. 5 in total! 7 of 8 being awful! Joy! I'm surprised we're not seeing any of the "He's in the best shape of his life" type articles that usually accompany this level of under-performance. I guess they're going with "Maata will resurrect him"
  10. If so, they did a really poor job of it. Was there a time this season when you thought "This is our year"? I was barely alive for 1969 but it sounds like it was a lot like 2003 which was much worse than this season.
  11. If they were looking for that they should have fired him mid season. Not everything is his fault but he should know that when you're in charge everything is your fault. I think he'll get rehired pretty quickly.
  12. Versteeg has already been sent to Rockford where he'll tutor the younger guys. Kruger was part of the price of unloading Hossa's contract. Surprisingly, Shaw isn't the worst player ever. He might actually be a useful player this season and I have never really thought much of Shaw. I love Saad so there's that. A lot of the season comes down to de Haan. He could be the other half of the shut down pairing that the Hawks so desperately needed last year and didn't have.
  13. It seems to me that the fact that there are worse managers is an important part of the discussion. I don't mean this as a vote of support for Maddon, his fate was likely sealed as soon as they decided not to give him a new contract going into the season. The point is that a lot of good coaches turn out to be lousy managers. So cautionary tales like the one Gooney referenced are important to consider.
  14. That assessment sounds about right. The 0-2 start can, at least in part, be attributed to the Hawks playing a lot of younger guys in those games. There's reason for guarded optimism for this season. I'm going to have to be sold on why they brought Shaw back. Ollie Maata and Nylander have something to prove. I think at least one of Kubalik and Kurashev will prove to be a really useful player. They got rid of the dead weight that was John Hayden. They should have a little more depth at Center and on defense.
  15. have you tried the Moe Norman single plane swing? I know someone who swears by it My swing isn't the problem. Well, not the problem with my back. It's carrying my bag. It's weird because the bag doesn't feel heavy at all when I'm carrying it but the center of my back starts to hurt on the way home.
  16. I started my first season as JV golf coach. Can't beat free golf. I actually get paid well enough to buy a new set of irons at the end of the season. Walking 9 holes 3 times a week carrying my bag hasn't been great for my back though. I should probably use a pull cart but the pain of that humiliation might actually be worse.
  17. According to Mooney's recent piece in the Athletic, the Cubs payroll is now near $245MM. Maybe I'm mistaken, but I can't seem to recall the prior owners (the Tribune Co) forking out that kind of dough to put a team on the field. Exceeding the $246MM threshold also leads to draft penalties... I wonder how many other teams in MLB are spending that kind of dough? Probably not that many. I've been following this team since 79' and you know... we could have done worse with an ownership group imo .... Maybe Theo and crew need to do a better job of spending Ricketts $ .... just sayin .... We don't take kindly to bootlickers around these parts mate https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/payroll/ or, if you prefer https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/2019-mlb-opening-day-payrolls-red-sox-cubs-yankees-open-season-above-competitive-balance-tax-threshold/ They're spending money, they're just spending it poorly.
  18. I believed until they moved him off third base. Remember the ceaseless threads about moving Mueller to second base? That was at Cubs.com
  19. I’m pretty sure Houston was mainly a catcher though, right? Mueller was good but had that nasty knee injury. Tyler Houston came up as a catcher but the Cubs played him at 3rd as part of their "Let's try everybody at third" program. As far as catchers playing third, Houston was better than Jake Fox or LLoyd McClendon.
  20. I know what you mean but if it really was Buechele for 10 years that doesn't check out with the Cubs trying literally everyone they could think of at 3rd. For example, Delino DeShields and somebody named Shane. Right; I just remember it as a parade of nondescript white dudes for whatever reason. You could tell me any one of them was there for years. http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/chc/history/players.jsp Shane Andrews. Also Howard Johnson. Was Bote really up during 2012?
  21. I typically associate that era of Cub third basemen with milquetoast white dudes: Vance Law, Steve Buechele, Todd Zeile, Kevin Orie. Same. If someone told me Steve Buechele played 3B for the Cubs for a decade, I probably wouldn't even blink. I know what you mean but if it really was Buechele for 10 years that doesn't check out with the Cubs trying literally everyone they could think of at 3rd. For example, Delino DeShields and somebody named Shane.
  22. They found him passed out drunk in the cargo hold of a FedEx plane? Is that it? Freddie Mitchell had his own plane? :hello: =D>
  23. They found him passed out drunk in the cargo hold of a FedEx plane? Is that it? I thought it was after his favorite type of pant. Shorts, actually, but I'll allow it.
