  1. Too bad it comes far too late, as always. I bet as soon as this team becomes mathematically eliminated, they become the hottest team in baseball for a month.
  2. Dempster's gotta be hurt. You don't just go from being that good to being that bad so quickly without something being wrong.
  3. Barrett forgets what Carlos Beltran did at Wrigley in 2004. (2.057 OPS ). After all the pundits saying "The Cubs need to sign Beltran, he absolutely loves to hit in Wrigley", he had a .607 OPS in 2005 at the park. Lee only has a mere 1.250 OPS so far this year at Wrigley. His numbers previous to this year at Wrigley are in line with his career OPS. We need to get a big bat for next year... Lee would fit the bill. There's a lot of guys who put those numbers up at Wrigley Field.... against Cubs pitching. Signing a guy simply because he hits well at Wrigley is a bad idea. Don't get me wrong. I think C Lee would look great between DLee and Ramirez, but I've never put much stock into the "He hits well at our park, so lets sign him!" argument.
  4. My team is in last place and keeps sinking.
  5. You know, I don't think I've ever given up on a season so quickly. But this whole management team needs to be replaced. Every last one of them.
  6. Olerud was a young man at that time, though. Gammons is 61. I would think that would work against him.
  7. Get well soon, Peter. What are his chances for recovery? I lost a neighbor in 98 to a stomach aneurysm. She was fine the day before, and even the day of, but she got a really bad stomachache after dinner, collapsed, and died about 2 hours later. She was a realy nice lady, too.
  8. I'm all for what the Knicks did. This is Hendry's bed, he should have to lie in it. Give him one year to fix his mess, and if there isn't significant improvement, he's gone.
  9. That stat is off. It should go by the last time they were 19 under, which they were at some point in the 2002 season. Games under isn't really as interesting as winning percentage. 67-92 is actually a significantly better W% than where the Cubs are now. How many are we on pace to lose? I figure if you're gonna suck, go all-out and lose 100.

  11. What's the over/under on how bad they lose tomorrow? I think they'll make a game of it. I'm putting the over/under at 4 1/2.
  12. The 1999 and 2000 teams were pretty bad. This one is worse. Without Sammy, though, the 1999 team is worse than this one.
  13. "Uh, yeah, I'm looking for some bags that you can fit a human head in."
  14. Nolan Ryan was clocked at 103 once when he was with the Angels.
  15. A supersub with power is a very valuable part of any team.
  16. Ugh. Another pitcher who walks everyone and can't get anyone out. Sign him up!
  17. Completely Useless By September Or, do something about walks and base-clogging.
  18. Wife beaters are scum. I hope he rots.
  19. I wouldn't believe Murph if he said the sky was blue without actually seeing it for myself.
  20. I don't think abolishing the leagues is necessary, but it would be nice to have one series against each AL team each year. Interleague could be year-round. I think he just meant abolishing the current leagues. I think it sounds like a great idea. Obviously there would still need to be leagues so they can have the same playoff format, all star game, etc. I wouldn't mind having the Cubs and Sox in the same division. Then it would be a REAL rivalry. I wouldn't be against flipping one or two teams around, but I doubt the league would go for a complete reallignment. Even if you tried it geographically, you're still kinda funky... Seattle SAn Fran Oakland Dodgers Angels Padres Rockies Rangers Astros Diamondbacks Braves Marlins D-Rays Cincinatti? Kansas City? Cubs Brewers Twins White Sox Cardinals Mets Yankees Red Sox Blue Jays Detroit Baltimore Washington Philllies Pirates Cleveland Is about the best I can do
  21. If last year was any indication, we already did do that with Lee. Anyway-what isn't a fantasy in this forum? Unless you're talking about things that have already happened, its all fantasy. Aside from that, seeing as how we all love to second guess so much, I just figured I'd throw a first-guess in there. Why not speculate? $98 million could buy an incredibly competitive (dare I say World Series contending) team. I should have clarified: This team is not capable of trading for an already great hitter who hasn't even hit his prime yet. When we traded for Lee he was good, but not great. I'm not sure what the point is of just saying "its never going to happen, this team's terrible and it always will be terrible." If that's the case, then why bother being so involved with them? Isn't speculation and hope the only thing we have at this point? We spend enough time having to revel in the crappiness that is this team right now-if we're all forced to then revel in the potential crappiness that is forever with this team, then we might as well just give up and stop posting, stop rooting for them, stop going to games, stop buying merchandise, etc., because right now, hope is all we got. You do have a point, but I find very little to be hopeful about right now. I think you just hit the nail on the head and gave me a title for a book on Cubs fans: "Unreasonable Hope Offset by Periods of Utter Despair: The Life of a Chicago Cubs Fan" Haha. I'd buy it!
