  1. It seems like Roger Maris is once again redeemed, as it seems now that 61 will be once again recognized as the "clean" single-season HR record.
  2. Probably not. I'm no lawyer, but I did stay at a Holliday Inn express last night. I wouldn't see why not, though. Although it can't be proven that the player wouldn't have won the MVP anyway without the roids, a very compelling case could be made that the player was given enough of a boost to win the MVP, thereby screwing the #2 finisher out of his $500,000 bonus (or however much it was), and probably millions in future earnings.
  3. Sorry if this question has already been asked: Would players who had bonuses written into their contracts for winning MVP awards, and who finished in 2nd place to a player named on this list have any legal standing against that player to recoup what could now be considered monetary damages?
  4. Nomar, Lawton (briefly), Matt Williams, Farnsworth, are the ones that jump out immediately at me. Although Lawton really couldn't be blamed on Dusty as he was here very briefly.
  5. Wow, Prior and Wood on the list. If true, no wonder neither could stay healthy.
  6. If you put all that money in to fixing him, you had to at least see if it was worth it. I don't pretend to know Mark Prior on any sort of level, but if he was a reasonable man I'm sure he would have considered a 2-year, incentive-laden deal. I would just hate to put all that time and money into fixing him, then having him be healthy and pitching lights out for someone else.
  7. I'd make a terrible GM because I'm sentimental, but if it was me I'd have offered him a contract, stating that this was his absolute last chance. If he would have had another injury-plagued season this year, I'd have cut him loose and said goodbye. I just fear that he'll get healthy for another team, be the pitcher we all know he can be, then kick our asses a few times a year.
  8. Problem is he's going to one of the most hitter-friendly ballparks in the league. It's still a bad deal for the Astros because the guy appears to be older than he really is. They gave up a ton for a guy that's not getting any younger. True, but has anyone, ever, at any point in recorded human history "gotten any younger?"
  9. Manager Lou Piniella, who called Fukudome a cross between Ichiro Suzuki and Hideki Matsui, said last week he expected to bat the new Cub fourth or fifth in the order. Wow. I didn't think he had enough power to bat 4th. I always thought he was a leadoff or #2 guy.
  10. He's the perfect counter to the old "anyone can be a closer" argument.
  11. I don't know about Farnsworth, but I'd love to have LaTroy in the bullpen. Just not for 3.75M. He was decent when not closing games for us. Then he flipped the F out against the Cardinals in 04 and never really was decent after that.
  12. How would that thing hold up in hurricane-force winds?
  13. Wow. This is odd to see from the Brewers. They mean business. Didn't happen much under Selig (at least once he became commish).
  14. Maybe I'm just not attracted to him in the same way others are, but I think that's quite steep. Agreed. I'd do any two of them, but not all three.
  15. I'd try to swoop in there and see if the Yanks would deal him to us. I know, I know. It's not happening. But if I were Hendry I'd at least put feelers out.
  16. I find it funny that this is the case now, when I remember the backlash about DeRosa's contract when he first signed it.
  17. Tim, I don't know if you've seen the latest Sullivan article but there is absolutely zero chance that Cedeno starts at SS next year according to Lou. Lou made a statement to the effect that Theriot is "his guy" and that when opening day comes around Theriot will be playing SS. I think Cedeno is as good as gone or will be viewed as a back up next year. Lou is leaps and bounds better than Dusty, but I still find it frustrating that he, much like Dusty, will develop an irrational attachment to a certain player and then never waiver come hell or high water.
  18. Ok folks, this may be a dumb one, but it's been one I've been wondering about for quite some time. I know it's perfectly legal to trade minor leaguers to other clubs. However, is it legal to trade minor leaguers for other minor leaguers without any Major League talent being involved? I can't recall a trade (not to say there weren't any, just that I don't remember) in which a team traded prospects to another team for prospects, and that was the entire trade.
  19. You do have a good point, and I understand that Murt's trade value is very low. I really think it stinks, as I've always thought he could have been a Mark Grace type hitter. This is probably just another case of fans overvaluing their team's prospects, but I think we could regret it down the line if we trade Murton. However, if he isn't going to play, I agree. Trade him for something of value. Not that I wouldn't like to see Brian Roberts here, though.
  20. I was kind of hoping Gallagher was going to be in the rotation next year, so I'm not all that thrilled to see him go. But, I do like Roberts. But would you do Murton and Gallagher straight up? Especially when we could get more for those two. We could get Teahen for Murton, and Gallagher could be used as an add-on to a major trade. Now if you have either Tejada or Bedard coming back over, then definately send them Gallagher, but not just for Roberts alone. It's been established that the Royals won't do Teahen for Murton. Oh. Well, never mind that, then. But I still think those 2 for Roberts straight up is a bad deal.

  22. Getting things back on track... Gallagher and Murton is too expensive for Roberts alone. I'd rather do the Murton for Teahen deal if that's the case.
