  1. That phone call has me starting to wonder if Roger might be telling the truth. Well, Clemens himself taped it. The one thing that gets me is this. Throughout that entire conversation, he never asked the other guy "Why did you lie?" or, when asked "What do you want me to do?" he didn't say "Tell them I didn't do it!" Sure, he denied steroid use several times in the conversation, but to not ask the other guy to come out and publicly say that Roger didn't do it doesn't sit well with me.
  2. DeRosa has been very consistent statistically the last two years as a starter which is why many of us think he can repeat his numbers from 2006-2007 ( .295, .374, .438, .802). Of course his numbers fall when you count the years he was a utility IF and not getting regular playing time. Also, I wish all of you posters out there who hint that DeRosa will get significant playing time at SS would realize that the Cubs have no plans for him at SS. They have stated that Theriot is the starter and they're looking for a sub SS who can bat left-handed (Cintron?). As for DeRosa strengthening the bench, we can find a right-handed pinch hitter for a lot less than Marshall, Gallagher, and Cedeno. And there's still a good chance that Roberts will outproduce DeRosa (even at his best) by ~ 3 wins next year. If DeRosa regresses from his career year last year, then it's probably not even close. And if we do keep DeRosa after the Roberts trade, don't be so quick to dismiss the effect he'll have as a backup. It's not just pinch-hitting. There are a ton of backup AB's that he will get over far inferior players. That is definitely significant. Still, I'd rather they flip him to Toronto in a Burnett deal, if that indeed is being discussed. I'm a proponent of cheaper bench players anyway, and I'd love to have AJ here to solidify the rotation. Unfortunately, Burnett has contracted Mark Prior-itis when it comes to staying healthy.
  3. Ugh. Just say no to Burnett. If we're going to get an arm, let's go after Blanton. Would Murton be of interest to Beane as part of a package for Blanton?
  4. How much foul territory will be lost along 3rd base?
  5. As long as Lou has learned not to put him in non-save situations, he should be fine in the pen.
  6. I just don't understand it. People never hated on Stone until that 2004 debacle between Dusty and him and Chip. Then people started disliking him. I never understood it. I've been around Cubs message boards since the 1999 season and I had never seen such mass hatred for Steve Stone until after 2004. I seriously hope people weren't influenced by Dusty Baker and his band of merry idiots.
  7. Once Chip got over trying to be Harry Jr. and just started to be himself, he wasn't bad. I've heard far worse. Pat Hughes is the bomb diggity, though.
  8. Odd how a thread can grow two pages in a half an hour to no posts in five days.
  9. I would be INCREDIBLY pissed if they changed the name of Wrigley. Is nothing sacred anymore? It's not "just a name." It's a symbol and a landmark; an American Icon, if you will. Can you imagine the uproar to be had if the federal government, in an attempt to increase revenue to pay off the national debt, would sell off naming rights to national landmarks? Would visiting the "AT&T Statue of Liberty" or "The Budweiser Grand Canyon" really be as appealing? And what about all the merchandise they sell with Wrigley on it? I know I certainly wouldn't buy a shirt that said "AOL Field" on it. Why not just take down the ivy, scoreboard, and basket while we're at it, too? The Cubs make a TON of money. They don't need to prostitute themselves in this way.
  10. give that kid a chance too...i am secretly praying he wins the job during ST...anybody but theriot... is fontenot still on the team because if he is he shouldn't be If Roberts is traded for there almost certainly won't be room for Fontenot anymore. And his ABs from last year will be DeRosa's ABs this year. :D Fontenot for Bedard. Straight up. A guy can dream, can't he? LOL, I'm not sure if that's dreaming or evidence of a crack addiction. J/K Hey! I can quit any time I want!
  11. He should probably join the TV booth instead to fill the roughly 1 hour and 45 minutes of blank air Hawk leaves available when the Sox are losing. LOL.There is gonna be alot of that tihs year. Music to my ears. All the more reason for WGN to drop the Sox games and add more Cubs games! Add more Cubs games? But the old "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" and "The Jeffersons" reruns are ratings gold! Gold, I tell you!

  13. This has probably been asked, but does DeRosa have the arm to play SS? Could he gun down a runner on a ball fielded deep in the hole?
  14. Free agents-- Colon,Kyle Lohse,Livan Hernandez,Matt Clement Thats all I can think of now Yech. Pretty slim pickings.
  15. Any other pitchers on the market, either via FA or through trade that we could get at this point?
  16. Murton and Gallagher for Roberts alone is too much. However, I wouldn't be opposed to shipping both to Baltimore if Bedard was also on his way over.
  17. Man, I'd love to get him without giving up Hill. That would be a nasty rotation 1-4. Left handed heavy, but yes, it would be dominating. I don't really care what hand a guy throws with. I don't care if he throws with his foot. Just as long as he can get people out.
  18. Lots of cheaters in the hall of fame. Spitball throwers, sign stealers...how about Ty Cobb's sharpened spikes? willing to cheat =/= steroid user This is a great point. IF Sammy used (and that's a big "if), it was not illegal or outlawed by MLB the years he was most likely juicing. That does not condone it, but if he did it, it was technically "within the rules." Compare this to someone like Gaylord Perry, who admitted to throwing an illegal pitch for most of his career, was caught on at least one occasion with a foriegn substance/object, and yet he seems to be revered. Would you be in favor of expelling him from the Hall of Fame seeing as it's a fact that he cheated, rather than keeping someone out based on speculation and public opinion? It makes no sense.
  19. Sorry, OMC. You're out a quarter.
  20. Such greats as Manny Alexander and Ricky Bones as well are on there.
  21. I see Derrick Turnbow in there.
  22. Let's not get into this argument again.
  23. and 755 by Hank Aaron. Yes. I'm sure that he'll be #1 again in the court of public opinion, regardless of what the stats say. So when/if A-Rod hits number 756, will there be the media circus that there was for Bonds, or will they wait until he breaks Bonds's record?
