  1. I'm willing to give Hoff a chance as the 4th OF/backup 1B. He's got some pop off the bench, which is something this team sorely needs.
  2. Milton Bradley isn't a Cub yet, guys. Let's not say "DeRosa netted us Bradley" when it hasn't officially happened yet. These are the Cubs, after all.
  3. I love that I get it in my expanded basic package. I don't get either the NFL Network or ESPNews with my package, but I get free baseball and baseball-related programming 24/7/365. My wife is thrilled. Although I'm a little dissapointed they're showing Don Larsen's perfect game about 5 times in 2 days. But, I don't think everything can be "original programming". The network format won't allow it.
  4. Make sure you teach him how a Cub is worthless if they strike out, ground into a double play, or make an error. Will do, Chief.
  5. Unless we end up with Peavy, I sure wish the Cubs hadn't traded DeRosa. Seconded. There was no reason to get rid of DeRo unless a Peavy trade was imminent.
  6. The DeRo trade is terrible if we don't end up with Peavy.
  7. Any word on if we're close to signing Fischer Price and the Parker Brothers?
  8. Godspeed, DeRo. Say hi to Kerry for us. I think we're really going to miss DeRo's versaility more than anyone here can know. Are there any DeRo-like FA's out there right now? Someone who can play about 5 different positions?
  9. I've got it on the expanded basic package on Channel 84 on Charter in SE Wisconsin. I'm pumped, but I'm sure my wife will be less than thrilled. I'm going to watch it with my son around, make sure he knows the fundamentals of the game, and that he knows what a beautiful game it truly is.
  10. I'd take him back. My man-love for Sammy knows no bounds. And at the end of the season, retire his #21 to the right field flagpole.
  11. Lowe was one of the guys I had pegged for a rotation upgrade. Not at that contract, though.
  12. Ugh. If we lose, the Bears beat us. If we win, the Vikings make the playoffs. Talk about a rock and a hard place.
  13. And if he complains in a few years about how he wants out of Washington and wants to "play for a winner" I may have to track him down and punch him in the face.
  14. What was the Red Sox offer again? I'd gladly take it if it was even sorta close to the one that Washington is offering. For me, personally, the chance to be paid very well (instead of obscenely well) and play for a winner would be very tempting.
  15. The Brewer's window has closed. It'll be a few years before it opens again. No reason the Cubs shouldn't win the Central again this year, even if they do nothing on the FA market.
  16. First, welcome to the board. Second, yes, the Cubs have had pretty good pitching the last few years. However, your statement makes the assumption that because he hits the Cubs well, he's a good hitter. While I'm indifferent to Dunn, the fact that because a hitter kills our good pitching staff doesn't always make him a good hitter. Is Chris Young good because he murders us? If Dunn can put up those numbers in Wrigley against our pitching staff, why can't he put up the same lines in other road ballparks against worse pitching staffs? I'd like to see some of those numbers. Again, not saying that Dunn is good or bad. Just debunking this whole "He hits well here, let's sign him" argument.
  17. If I had Dunn's career numbers at Wrigley, I'd want to be a Cub also. 217 ABs: .286/ .419/ .664/ 1.083. That's also all against Cubs pitching. I don't put too much stock into a guys career numbers at a road ballpark.
  18. He can't be any worse than Glenallen Hill. I can guarantee that Dunn won't hit any homers that land on the rooftops across the street.
  19. I really hope he does it. Not because I'm a fan of the guy, but just because it would be a cool story I think there are far too few knuckleballers these days. I'd like to see him make it.
  20. I wonder if he feels like a big man now.
  21. I'd take Lowe. Why not? Upgrading is always a good thing, even if what you're upgrading is already a strength. I take it we're no longer considering Randy Johnson, then?
  22. Bingo - I rarely post on here, but do enjoy reading the board. However, one of the biggest issues on this board (and most message boards) is everything has to be black or white - either it's the greatest move in the world or Gathright s*cks beyond belief. Neither one is really accurate though. I have no problem whatsoever with signing a speedy, good glove centerfielder cheaply and giving him a shot in spring training, and that's all this is (if it actually happens). I just don't see the need for the move, personally. So he's fast, and he can't do much else. There's plenty of fast guys out there who can't do anything else. Why not one of them?
  23. I'll always remember where I was the day the Cubs signed the great Joey Gaithright. Years from now I'll tell my grandkids the story... "Gather round, kids. Let me tell you about the move that changed baseball forever... the great Joey Gaithright signed with the Cubs. It was a cold winter's day in December of aught-eight...." Seriously, though, this move makes us the runaway favorites in the NL.
