  1. Nothing like being a player or two away from the World Series and then regressing with nearly every transaction (Bradley excluded). And people wonder why it's been over a century since the Cubs last won the World Series. I can't figure it out! While we've regressed we're still one of the better teams in the NL. We shouldn't rest on that, though. I don't think it's ok to say "Well, we've gotten worse, but we're still pretty good!" The goal is to improve your team every year, or at least not get worse. This team is noticably weaker in many ways since October.

  3. Jim Hendry is seriously in the bottom 5 GM's in the game. What the hell, Jimbo? Are you on crack? I hate this team sometimes. I really do.
  4. Hendry's dream must be to one day have a roster composed of nothing but middle infielders. He must get sexually aroused at the thought.
  5. omg, do you work at Wrigley or something? should he pretend he doesn't? If I worked at Wrigley I'd probably have it tattooed on my forehead.
  6. That's great and all, but nobody ever accused the Phillies owners of being overly passionate must win owners, nor would they say that about the Cardinals. There was a time when Peter Angelos competed annually with the Yankees for highest payroll (and actually had the highest) and it did nothing. Steinbrenner is notoriously the most title hungry owner out there, but he spent 2 decades putting out disappointing teams. Sure, it would be great if the owner was committed to winning, but what's more important is they hire the right baseball people to run the operation. These are essentially the same thing, aren't they?
  7. Because that makes too much sense.
  8. Doesn't Boras represent like 7 of the top 10 guys for this years draft? The Cubs might be lucky to have one of those guys fall to them if other teams are scared of the price tag. I remember the Weiters thing scaring teams and all, but he was going to get paid regardless he was the best college hitter in the draft and plays a premium position for offense. I do think Laporta signed a reasonable contract with the Brewers though. IIRC, the Cubs do have a good working relationship with Boras, correct?
  9. I hope he has one last hurrah in a Cubs uniform. After 2 years in Cleveland, I want him to retire a Cub.
  10. I doubt we'll see any sort of a hard cap anytime soon. The owners would have to make a TON of concessions in order to get that to happen.
  11. No. I think his name is Jim Anixler. I like that Ricketts is a fan, I'm sure he would put money into the team, but I worry that he is a dumb fan. Dumb Cubs fans have some awful ideas about what this team needs. He seems like the best option at this point anyway. Sometimes I think we're all dumb for being Cub fans. It's not like it's a good decision, really. But this must be what its like to smoke for 30 years. You love it even though you know it's never done you any good, and it's just about impossible to quit, and you hate that you can't.
  12. I don't care anymore. Just get it over with so we still have some time to sign/trade for players we need.
  13. Not if Dusty is still at the helm, they won't.
  14. ...and she almost sells it for $10 on eBay! http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/blog/big_league_stew/post/Woman-finds-139-year-old-baseball-card-in-box-of?urn=mlb,132871
  15. I think this really comes down to Peavy. The Padres dangled him and I think he officially wants out. Peavy's contract extension was based on the Padres staying competitive. I wouldn't be surprised if Peavy forces the trade to the Cubs. I've held firm all offseason that this deal will happen. I'm also expecting it to happen sooner now than later. Both teams still have work to do if Peavy isn't going anywhere, and less and less players will be available to either team the longer this deal takes. How would he do that? He could be a total jerk and go to the media and say he refuses to play another game in a Padres uniform, and he will only accept a trade to the Cubs, and force the Padres hand.
  16. I wonder if we could get Sheets on a backloaded 3-year deal, where the 3rd year vests based on innings pitched in the first 2 years.
  17. To play devils advocate, the Brave's shortcomings always seemed to be lack of offense and lack of late inning relief. Perhaps if the Braves had altered the formula (Like say replace Sid bream with somebody with more of an impact) they may have been able to win more championships. Hendry has shown can he can evolve. 3 years ago he was saying things like "I don't pay much attention to on base percentage" and the players he signed (Jacques Jones for example) showed that he meant that. Lately he seems to have targeted OBP guys like Derosa, Kendall, Fukudome, and now Bradley. He can evolve, yes, but then he moves on to his next ridiculous idea: "I like guys who can catch the ball", the obsessive need for a lefty bat when there are better righty ones to be had, etc.
  18. Lol. Seriously Dave Kaplan is dumber than the Voice of Reason. and almost as ugly as South Side Ryan. One thing I have disliked about this website for quite some time now is that it seems that the "Attack the argument, not the poster" rule has seemingly been long since forgotten.
  19. Bradley's not really a HR hitter. I was surprised to find that he has only hit 100 or so homeruns in his 9 year career. Seems like a decent #2 guy.
  20. Jacque Jones wasn't bad that season. .285/.334/.499 108 OPS+ I think he's just worried about him starting off slow and then going insane when the fans get on him. He's going to go off the first time the fans boo him.
  21. At least it gives us another good bat. Let's hope he can remain healthy and relatively sane.
  22. I'm in like Flynn.
