  1. From the most current issue of SI. It's a pretty good read if you're into sabremetrics and all that. I never realized the sheer importance of defense until I read that article, and maybe this will launch me into Sabre-dom. Defensive metrics are working their way into more MLB offices all the time, even the ones that were slow to embrace things like OBP and OPS. http://vault.sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1153911/index.htm
  2. I plan on watching the game with my 5-month-old son. I'm excited that I can share our first Opening Day together with him. He won't understand what's going on, nor will he be interested, but I still plan on having him on my lap, explaining the game to him. I hope he grows up to be a baseball fan.
  3. Their pitching is horrible. They're going to be on the wrong end of a lot of 8-6 games this year.
  4. I know. I hate that. They don't need a built in weather day since they are playing in a dome. Huh? What makes the day after the opening day guaranteed bad weather? Nothing does. It's just in case the Opening Day game gets rained out, then they can replay it the next day on the scheduled off day.
  5. I know. I hate that.
  6. Does anyone else see the irony of a mod on a Cubs message board not knowing when opening day is. :D EJ needs to turn in his Mod badge.
  7. Nobody else on the Ms list would be useful to us, but if no Peavy deal can happen, Id take Bedard. I know Hendry has shown some interest in him in the past. most of those guys have horrendous contracts and can't be moved. at least beltre's contract is up after this season so i could see someone taking him on if they need a 3B at the deadline. silva has 3 years, $36M which is awful. i guess if someone is desperate enough they could take on washburn or batista since their contracts are up. nobody wants johjima for 3 years and $24M. lopez has value due to a team-friendly contract, especially if the progress he made offensively last season was a real breakthrough - but he may not be a guy that the m's want to give up. bedard has a lot of value if he's healthy - look at what the m's gave up to get him. I'll take one of those guys if Felix comes over in the deal.

  9. \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ I've waited through the long, cold, depressing winter just to hear the crack of the bat again. I can't wait. And this is my son's first Opening Day as well. He'll be in his Cubs outfit and on my lap as we watch. Baseball season is finally here and I couldn't be more stoked. Let me be the first to say.... Win, idiots.
  10. Sheffield has signed with the Mets per ESPN. Trying to find contract info. edit: New York Post reporting the Mets are only on the hook for $400,000, with the Tigers picking up the other $14 million. He's signed for this year only, and wants significant playing time so he can cash in next offseason on the FA market. Good luck with that, Sheff. http://blogs.nypost.com/sports/st/archives/2009/04/mets_close_to_s.html
  11. Holy crap, the Bears have a QB worth a damn now. Amazing!
  12. FOUR DAYS!!! \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ And to think, this date last year was Game #2 of the season.
  13. 7 days, 8 hours, 32 minutes until the first game of the year. Cubs open the season 1-0. Discuss.
  14. Absolutely the best choice. I hope he does well in that role so Lou isn't tempted to tinker with Marmol there.
  15. Crazy dudes always seem to be pretty good hitters.
  16. Yeah. He actually said, "I'll have speaks with the umpire." That game had everything a Cub fan could possibly ask for, and beyond. It's certainly in my top 3 favorite games. Nothing will ever eclipse the 20 strikeout game, though. My favorite game hasn't happened yet. It's the game where the Cubs win the World Series. I was only 9 when Wood pitched his 20 strikeout game, and I wasn't too into baseball then. I didn't really get into it until 2003. I shouldn't say nothing will ever eclipse the 20k game. A Cubs National League Pennant clincher, and a World Series clinching game would both eclipse that game.
  17. Is the GM in charge of farm development, or is that even over Hendry's head? If not, that's just one more reason why he should get the boot. The Brewers have a fantastic farm system and have developed what many consider to be a future ace (Gallardo), and one hell of a lineup in Hardy, Fielder, Braun, Gamiel, etc. There is no reason that the Cubs shouldn't be able to do that with their resources.
  18. Yeah. He actually said, "I'll have speaks with the umpire." That game had everything a Cub fan could possibly ask for, and beyond. It's certainly in my top 3 favorite games. Nothing will ever eclipse the 20 strikeout game, though.
  19. Why aren't the Cubs pumping more into the farm and development? At one time we had the #1 rated farm system in all of baseball, although it may have been highly overrated. It seems like it's barren.
  20. Easily one of my favorite games of all time. I believe that's the game where Angel Hernandez blew a call at the plate in which the Cubs runner was safe. 7th inning stretch guest singer Steve McMichael called him out on it before he began singing, and remains the only 7th inning stretch singer to have been ejected. What is with the Cubs and Rockies and crazy games?
  21. what are your realistic, bold predictions for '09? just curious because your contributions to this thread: "shut up meph", "2 1/2 men" and "seriously though" don't really seem to add much to the baseball discussion. truffle will talk about matt wieters more than the cubs umfan and eric will ruin the game threads more to come IMB will still remain completely oblivious to the fact that there's an ignore feature for people he doesn't like.
  22. And here's mine, which is vastly superior to all: C Victor Martinez 1B Adam Dunn 2B Robinson Cano 3B Kevin Youklis SS Jose Reyes OF Manny Ramirez OF Jermaine Dye OF Johnny Damon SP Dan Haren SP Chad Billingsley RP Jose Valverde RP Troy Percival P Chen-Ming Wang P Dice-K P Derrek Lowe BN Mark Reynolds BN AJ Alphabet BN Adam LaRoche BN Chris Carpenter BN Aaron Cook BN Fernando Rodney
  23. In what realm is that "bold?" :) It's realistic.
