  1. Does it matter where we draft? Odds are we will draft someone nobody expected to get taken with that pick. And someone that could have waited a good 100 more picks or so before he needed to be scooped up.
  2. you're veering into colin cowherd territory (it's the hall of fame, not the "hall of very good") here ? that's a pretty baseless comparison. ultimately, the all-star game is an exhibition game. it's primary purpose is so gather up the biggest stars in the game and put them on one stage for one night. no, its primary purpose has always been to reward the players who had the best first halves. that's why you had tim wakefield, edwin jackson, aaron hill, ben zobrist, brandon inge, jason bartlett, nelson cruz, adam jones, hunter pence, brad hawpe, jason marquis, ryan franklin and heath bell on the all star teams last year. none of those guys are giant stars of the game. putting a guy like strasburg on the all star team would be completely out of place with what has been done in baseball pretty much forever. Truffle pretty much made my point better than I did. I'm going to piggyback onto this.
  3. My brother and I used to do that when we were younger. All the good NL players and then the worst AL guys we could think of.
  4. He was arguing on overall popularity in the national media, not past track records, and I responded in kind. What kind of past MLB track record does Strasburg have? 5 starts? The argument was solely about popularity and "who the fans want to see." I very much doubt anyone outside of Milwaukee or possibly an NL Central city would be super excited to see Yovani Gallardo in action, as good as he is, because he doesn't have dozens of national media at all of his starts like Strasburg does. Again, I'm not saying that Strasburg isn't popular or that he hasn't put up great numbers so far. But since the stupid HFA rule has been attached to the game you have to look at stats, too. However, seeing as you can't debate with anyone without resorting to insults and immaturity, I'm done debating this with you.
  5. You kind of proved my point. Strasburg has been fantastic since he's been up. So has Boesch. Of course Strasburg has the higher career ceiling by far, but if you're going to put him in after only 7 career starts, how can you pass on Boesch after 60-some career games when he's been great, too. For those who don't know, through 53 games Boesch is .330/.389/.621 with 12 HR and 43 RBI. "For those who don't know" illustrates perfectly why he's not a candidate for the ASG. So even though he's put up really good stats in the 1/3rd of a year since he's been up, as has Strasburg, Boesch shouldn't get in because he doesn't have the hype or the media following? Welp, I guess that eliminates Gallardo and Greinke. it's called the all-star game. strasburg is a star, boesch isn't. We're going to have to agree to disagree here. If all you base it on is popularity, then you're absolutely right. Strasburg gets in and Boesch, etc doesn't. But if you base it on stats then some players who aren't nearly as popular but who have still put up good numbers like Boesch, Greinke, Gallardo, etc should all get in as well.
  6. Get rid of the homefield advantage rule and then stop worrying about who makes it and who doesn't, because then it's purely an exhibition and there's no ambiguity about making popularity the criteria. Agree 100%. The HFA rule is one of the dumbest thing I've ever seen. Then it can truly be about popularity and who the fans want to see instead of stats that have been put up.

  8. I don't disagree. But popularity can lead to a lot of guys in the ASG who don't always deserve it, either. Griffey got in during a lot of his down years due to injury, and Cal Ripken, Jr got in some years just because of who he was. Again, not that Strasburg hasn't had a great few starts, but then where do you draw the line? Brennan Boesch has had 1/3rd of a fantastic year. Should he go in? I'm not saying he shouldn't, but if you put Strasburg in you gotta but Boesch in there, too. And I'm going off of the assumption that Strasburg puts up similar numbers in his next 2 starts and doesn't get hit in one or both of them. Lots of guys make the ASG that don't deserve it based on their current-year production, sure. But by construction, current-year production is less important than who the fans want to see play. Again, like it or not, that's the system. So there's nothing wrong with an over-the-hill Griffey of Ripken making the ASG once you recalibrate your expectations to favor popularity over production. Given I've never even heard of this Brennan Boesch guy, I strongly doubt he is deserving on the popularity score. Probably not, but in terms of pure stats if you put Strasburg in, then Boesch should be voted in by the fans.

  11. So we're going to send every pitcher who has 7 good starts leading up to the ASB? What if he gets knocked around his next 2 starts? Are you going to feel the same way? I don't disagree with you that he's a great pitcher with awesome stuff and he's done a very good job thus far. But 7 starts is a sample size. That's about 20% of a full season. Anyone can have a good 1/5th of a year. That's not to say he won't continue, as he most likely will. But none of us know that for certain.
  12. If Carpenter encounters a stiff breeze and becomes injured yet again, it won't be disaster.
  13. Recently, one of the hot topics I've seen debated has been whether or not Stephen Strasburg deserves to make the All-Star team. I think it could lead to some good discussion here. ESPN.com even has an article about it. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=5335648 My take? While Strasburg has been everything he's been advertised to be, I don't think he deserves the All-Star game this season only because he doesn't have enough appearances. Now, had he been with the Nats sometime in April or maybe even early May and put up these kind of numbers I'd have a different opinion. I'm sure he'll have many All-Star games under his belt by the time it's all said and done, but assuming he makes his next scheduled starts (as there's no reason to think otherwise), he'll only have seven appearances this year. Not nearly enough to be counted among the best in baseball this year, I think.
  14. You don't think he has a feel for the team, having spent several years with them already? I suppose he does. I don't know, I just want Lou gone and I don't buy this "Well, the season's gone anyway so you might as well let him finish it out" talk. It's the talk of someone who really doesn't give a damn. If he's not performing, can him and bring in someone else. Managers are replaceable. Let Trammel take over and see what he can get out of them. It'll help toward making a managerial decision for next year. What harm could come of it? did you miss the part where we suggested it would give fuel to the "well, Trammel can't cut it, looks like Sandberg is our man" crowd? seriously, Lou isn't harming the team or any players. What good could come from putting another guy in charge of a sinking ship full of veterans? Really?

  16. They know Trammel's managing philosophies from the terrible Tigers teams he inherited. Why not throw him in midseason and let him get the feel of this team so he can take over next year?
  17. A) I wish we had a young cornerstone leader like Longoria B) Longoria didn't budge an inch. BJ's inyoface act didn't intimidate him in the slightest. and yes, the powder blues are dope Forget being a leader, I wish we had a young player with simply the baseball ability of Evan Longoria.
  18. i'm 90% sure he'll still be a cub. I'm betting he's a goner by the end of the season. How? He has a NTC. And he earns a million bazillion dollars. He's not going anywhere. Similar situations haven't stopped other players with NTC's and large contracts from demanding trades. If he makes it known enough that he wants out pronto and won't be satisfied until he's gone, he'll be moved just to avoid the distraction surrounding this whole thing.
  19. Holy crap, the Cubs WON? (races off to buy a lottery ticket)
  20. After Z's blowup I would have put the odds at greater than 50/50 that he's not a Cub next year. Now I think the percentage is in the high 90's that he's wearing a new uniform in 2011 after this.
  21. I'm pretty sure that's all GWB did. That and lie about WMD's.
  22. My prediction: Hendry will announce intentions to trade him ASAP, thereby lowing his trade value even further than it is. We end up eating 90% of his contract just to unload him and either take on a crappy contract in return or some AA-ball prospect who will never see the light of day.
  23. Yes, but that was before he punctuated a completely terrible season with yet another temper tantrum. Success is the best band-aid there is. As long as a player or a team is doing well, the problems tend to get ignored. Start losing, however, and that band aid is ripped off and you see the sores underneath.
