  1. From the Game 4 thread postgame: I just made the trip to the future in my time machine, and all I'm allowed to say without causing all kinds of trouble is: You're not wrong. Also: Having an NFL team in London turns out to be a horrible idea. But you probably guessed that already. I can't wait to see how you guys react when what happens tonight, happens. I mean, I've already read your future posts. But can't wait for it to happen for you all in real time, and then actually have that conversation. 8-)
  2. This one held up surprisingly well. Though the Cubs' early leverage was decisive enough that Francona wasn't tempted into using Miller or Shaw.
  3. Seriously. It seems particularly asinine given that an early lead will be huge, if not determinative. I'm braving for a lot of commentary about how great innings 7-8-9 set up for Cleveland, though down 3.
  4. "I love hitting curveballs" -- Kris Bryant with the line of the World Series
  5. And if he'd run hard out of the box, he would've had an inside-the-park HR.
  6. HEYWARD!!! All is forgiven! (Well, a little is forgiven)
  7. I keep jumping back and forth between thinking, "this is crazy", and "surely Joe & Bosio have a plan for game 7". But the latter is probably some combination of Lackey-Lester-CJ-Strop-Chap... which could work, but seems to needlessly narrow the margin for error. I hope to heck they know what they're doing.
  8. Thank you, Mr. Replay. You are quickly becoming my favorite ump.
  9. Common Jake. Don't need to be perfect, just get us thru 6 or preferably more.
  10. That's roughly the median outcome on my 1st inning offensive expectancy chart for tonight. 8-)
  11. Also like Javy at 9. Not because I think they'll pitch him any differently, but hopefully with the cavalry coming right behind he's more apt to lay off the waste pitches he's been chasing. Even a modestly selective Baez changes this lineup's complexion significantly.
  12. I guess this is what I was trying to say, poorly. We have enough in the bullpen to confidently get through 2 games if the starters do what we know they can do. I think that's right. I could see flexibility for some additional late-game machinations, like "Lester now getting up and stretching out in the bullpen, is he coming in to face the LHB?" But can't see him throwing bullpen pitches without using, and Francona isn't going to out-think himself over that like some newbie. IMO most likely scenario would be Lester or Lackey as a bridge in G7. After all, Smoltz told us to be happy if Hendricks can go 4 or 5 good innings.
  13. Alright, had do something with my Cubs-driven nervous energy, so here's a game 6 wishcast for your fanfic burn pile: Cubs score early off Tomlin; seems most positive storylines for us start here, I'm thinking a Bryant homer on a hanging curve. Then with a 2-3 run lead in the fourth, the Cubs have another rally burning: 2 on, none out. Forces Francona to choose which of his shutdown guys he wants to use to keep it close, but at risk of fatigue for potential game 7. So Miller or Shaw comes in early. And then comes the twist that tilts things towards the Cubs a bit. Someone (eg Baez, Contreras) has an unexpectedly great AB--as if coached to take everything except a grooved fastball. Finally a couple of our ropes fall in, plating two more. For the first time one (or two) of the Indians' stud relievers now faces the prospect of pitching consecutive days, but the Indians don't have a lead or even a terribly close game to show for it. Jake makes it through 6, effective but not dominant. Cubs add a couple more off Clevinger/Salazar types, win 7-2. Headlines going into game 7: Did the Cubs change their approach against Miller in game 6? And, how effective will Chapman be on Wednesday after throwing another 30 pitches tonight?
  14. Maybe they should try an acronym: GRF. Hm. That's kinda bad too. The G-Rate. The GRate. Or same, the Grate. ... There is no salvaging this.
  15. He literally said these words in order: "there's baseball at Wrigley Field for the first time in history." I've done some research and found that Wrigley is used primarily for baseball, and there have in fact been thousands of baseball games at Wrigley Field. It did also serve as the home venue for the Chicago Bears and Chicago Cardinals football teams, decades ago, but today is best known as the home ballpark of the very team at whose game Vedder was about to sing. Vedder apparently didn't know about the connection of the Cubs to Wrigley, or he wouldn't have made such a clumsy mistake. /s
  16. I confess to being irrationally confident. I believe in the hanging curveball... and from the moment the Indians made clear they were going with 3 starters this series, short rest be damned, I've felt we'd get ours and would always have a path to four wins. GO CUBS! (And for the purposes of winning this series, I will temporarily believe in the designated hitter. )
