  1. I never heard the quote about him waving off a cab b/c he was walking to the Westin; that certainly would mitigate things. Was that widely reported? Even so, I still think the father has a case, not that I like it anymore than you do. You CAN sue a bar for serving someone who's visibly drunk and goes out and kills someone. It happens all the time. Remember, there's the letter of the law and the spirit of the law. The restaurant is liable for damages caused by serving drunk patrons, period. It's part of the liquor license.
  2. I completely agree with the sentiment that it's utterly ridiculous of the father to go on a lawsuit-spree, but the suit against Mike Shannon's has legs. If it Hancock was obviously and visibly intoxicated while he was being served by Shannon's employees, then I think it'll be an open and shut case in favor of the father, and it'll probably be settled out of court. I wouldn't be surprised at all if the final settlement is in the 10 mil range. The suits against the tow truck driver and the driver of the disabled vehicle should be laughed out of court, but I think the dad wins the case against Shannon's if there's a grain of truth in the several eyewitness quotes in the media that Hancock was nearly incoherent. Given Shannon's long-time close association with the Cardinal organization, I'd be surprised if TLR, Jocketty, etc don't distance themselves from this debacle. 'No comment' is the only reasonable response.
  3. In Ryno's defense he suggested including JJ in a package for a 900 OPS guy, and he named that guy who is currently having a woeful time in the Bronx. I've also wondered what it might take to get Abreu. He's only 33, I believe he has a few 900 OPS years left in him.
  4. Yeah I don't think anyone is shocked at all; at least not those who have been paying attention to the Hendry-era Cubs. I realize this thread is predicated on a speculative little blurb, but trading Murton for relief help would be SO Cubs that I'll be shocked if it doesn't happen.
  5. Obviously lopsided. Make 'em throw in Hughes if they want the Big Murt.
  6. Either way I need to grow more fingernails somehow.
  7. Between Rolen and Zimmerman, it'll be really hard. Ohman up.[/quote=Aram Foley] He's been pretty darn good over at 3rd this year. I'm a Cubs fan so of course I'm biased, but he has been very impressive with some of the stops he's made this year. He impressed the NY announcers with his D, but he's got no chance, since he has the "lazy" and prima donna label. I'd like to see ARam do the Matt Foley "I live in a van down by the river" air quote schtick:
  8. Exactly. Plus, Farns was asked for his opinion: But I agree that it would be a helluva smackdown match. My money would be on Rocket if I could get 7-5 odds.
  9. "You know the law of averages says: Anything will happen that can" That's what it says "But the last time the Cubs won a National League pennant Was the year we dropped the bomb on Japan"
  10. dictionary.com Why might the Angels do it? One of their strengths is the depth of their system. If they need a guy like Jacques to help them this year, I don't think giving up their #7 prospect is a terrible idea - especially when that #7 has Aybar and Wood in line ahead of him.
  11. Seconded. Looks like Rodriguez has plate discipline, good IsoD, something the Cubs have lacked for many years. Pretty neat that the trade would involve two players with ethnically incongruous first and last names.
  12. Exactly. Can you imagine the nerve of the guy? I'll bet he's lounging in his backyard right now sucking down some cold brews, or getting ready for another round of golf this afternoon. But seriously, the Kerry bashing here has reached new depths of cluelessness. Rehab is unpredictable and painful as hell.
  13. Sammy's 2007 numbers are nearly right on his career averages right now: G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB K SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS 2007 TEX 32 119 15 33 7 0 8 27 11 26 0 0 .277 .344 .538 .881 Career 2272 8520 1437 2337 362 44 596 1602 906 2220 234 107 .274 .345 .537 .882
  14. I was thinking that was still when he was with Toronto, but I'm not positive about that. You're right - he was a Blue Jay at the time. Somewhere on NSBB I bet there's a thread dedicated to weird Cub injuries ... I wonder what ppl would vote as the weirdest of all time.
  15. What happened to the Orioles today reminded me of this horrible game: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/2002/B07280SLN2002.htm JD Drew batted in both 6-run rallies.
  16. Hill was an absolute monster. One of the weirdest Cub injury stories of all time (and there are many to choose from) was Glenallen on the 15-day DL due to an arachnophobia-related injury.
  17. That was a very Cub-like way to lose a game - what was Utley thinking.
  18. I predicted 78. I'm sorry but I didn't think the team looked that great on paper before the season, and it doesn't look that great now either. The roster looks like a bunch of random pieces put together. I predicted 81 - I liked the symmetry and I honestly believed (still do) the Cubs are a very average team this year. I don't think the final standings will look much different from the current standings: Wheat 25 11 - Chaff 16 18 8.0 Chaff 16 19 8.5 Chaff 15 20 9.5 Chaff 14 19 9.5 Chaff 15 21 10.0
  19. And next up is their skinny CF, Bobby's kid.
  20. I really wish we could trade Jones + a couple of good minor league arms to the Yanks for Abreu. I know, I know - never happen.
  21. I predict Z cruises thru the 2nd, 3rd and 4th, then walks a couple guys + a hit or two in the 5th. Then Lou will send him to the showers.
  22. Pagan probably will start 1-2 games a week-that's about the average amount of times the team should face a left-hander, and Pagan was brought up to play against LHP. That makes no sense...Pagan was terrible vs LHP last season. So is Jones, and so is Pie. It's not a great option, but it will hopefully be a small improvement, and Pagan has been good against LHP so far this year in the minors. Why not Chris Walker then? He provides better defense than Pagan, is a better base stealer, and hits for higher average I was wondering the same thing. Walker was hardly even mentioned as a possible call-up - what's the story with him? On the surface he looks better than Pagan.
  23. There were some crazy games down the stretch in '98. The Brewers returned the favor less than two weeks later: Ohh noooooo! Noooooo! http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/1998/B09230MIL1998.htm BREWERS 9TH: BECK REPLACED MERCED (PITCHING); Vina grounded out (second to first); Loretta singled to shortstop; Cirillo doubled to left [Loretta to third]; Burnitz was walked intentionally; Grissom popped to third; Jenkins reached on an error by Brown [Loretta scored (unearned) (no RBI), Cirillo scored (unearned) (no RBI), Burnitz scored (unearned) (no RBI), Jenkins to second]; 3 R (0 ER), 2 H, 1 E, 1 LOB. Cubs 7, Brewers 8.
