  1. It's ridiculous to think that Cuban would even drop a hint as to what his actual top bid might be. If he wanted to play that poker game, he'd drop a highball bid to scare off other potential bidders. But he'd have to make the leak a lot more authentic than telling FOX Sports Radio. Anyone else think that Cuban's chances for a successful MLB owners vote would go up much if he partnered with a more conservative, Selig-palatable co-owner? I'm talking about perceptions here ... ideally this co-owner would, in reality, be a hands-off, glorified investor.
  2. i think this event was foretold in Revelations
  3. Kerry is picking on those poor kids. It was probably only on 9 pitches. :D Psh, I'd say it took him 3 pitches, max: AZL Giants Top 1st * Skyler Stromsmoe strikes out swinging. * Nicholas Noonan strikes out swinging. * Angel Villalona strikes out swinging. EDIT: Yup, that was his only inning of work. Skyler, Nicholas, Angel - boys, it's time for school. Now go grab some bench
  4. I often have heated debates with some guy named FergieJ_31
  5. Nice opinion piece on MSNBC - I agree 100%, every word: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19749436/
  6. It should be added that the Lawton & McGriff deals were very good trades on paper; like Nomar they just didn't work out. Cubs effectively gave up Jason Dubois for Lawton, who up until he put on a Cub uniform was having a very solid 810 OPS year and was a perennial 350-360 OBP guy. Of course, Lawton's career went into the toilet when he was busted. And the Crime Dog deal was a bigger steal; they gave up a couple of scrubs named Manny Aybar and Jason Smith.
  7. If this is true, let the auction begin!
  8. Winfield was one of the funniest guys in baseball back in the late 70's / early 80's - a practical joker. It wouldn't surprise me if he was pretending to be a pitcher during BP or something. Slightly off-topic but I remember a hilarious interview with him where he described a game against the Pirates, a team of thumpers and bruisers, when he was on the Padres, probably '79 or so. He said he was plunked by a pitch and was ticked off ... he wanted to rush the mound. Then he looked at some of the Pirates on the field and there's "Stargell, Garner and Parker inching closer to the mound". He glanced at the Padres' dugout and there's "Ozzie Smith at the drinking fountain and Bill Almon sitting quietly". He says to himself, "Ok I'll just take first base."
  9. Cubs also picked up a game on Atl and Ariz, two of the three teams ahead of them in the WC race. If the Dodgers lose the Cubs are 3 GB.
  10. Cub killer Kearns up with 2 on and 1 out .. that guy owes us some big hits.
  11. That will be one helluva standing O when he makes his first Wrigley appearance. Can't wait ... just the kind of boost this team will need down the stretch. It would be like trading for an All Star.  Another hilarious joke but where's the towel reference? Maybe you and vance should enter Last Comic Standing; whoever trots out the same joke the most times wins.

  13. I'd love to see the Cubs work out a deal for Abreu even though the Cubs would have to part with young pitching. If Demp wants to start, and given Marmol's dominance thus far I'd definitely try a package including Marshall and see if the Yanks bite.
  14. Or any interest in Abreu? I'd love to see him patrolling RF.
  15. 2001: Crime Dog Sometimes baseball is a funny sport. Cubs were in first place when they traded for him to fill a black hole at 1B and bat 4th, giving Sammy some "protection". Cubs subsequently tanked. Similar to 2004, Nomar replaces Agony and the Cubs subsequently lose the WC spot.
  16. For a team called the Gnats they sure have a lot of large men.
  17. Good call. Try going out on a limb next time
  18. Not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but this was Simontacchi's last start against the Cubs: http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CHN/CHN200309021.shtml I have fond memories of that 15th inning walkoff bomb Sosa hit off Fassero.
  19. The World Series, of all events in sports, doesn't need gimmicks. Dumb idea. Stupid. Don't mess with the classic 7-game series format. Doesn't surprise me that Bud likes the idea.
