  1. In '84 they where both in the NL East... Maybe they were tied? If that were the case, it should say "division," not "divisions." That, or maybe they screwed up and meant 1994. Did the realignment happen in 94 or 95? I recall 95 being the first playoffs with the new alignment, but I think 94 already had the new divisions/wild card. '94 was the first year w/the realignment, but technically Stats is correct when they say "The farthest into the season the teams have played each other when they were both in first place was in 1984" because in '84 they were tied for first. In '89 the Cubs were battling the hated (and still-potent) Mets for first place this late into the season; in fact, I remember a crucial Cubs-Mets series at Wrigley in late July/early Aug. The Cubs swept the three-game set, with Grace capping off the 3rd game with a walkoff 2-run HR off Aguilera. At the time the Cubs were in 2nd, but that sweep of the Mets was often cited as the spark that propelled them into first shortly afterward. (Kinda like the 5-game set vs the Cardinals in Sep 2003).
  2. We appreciate your priorities; don't think it went unnoticed that you have Cubs WS victory ahead of lifetime of independent wealth. Now THAT'S Old Style  (can't believe I'm paying homage to that goofy ad campaign)
  3. It's hilarious this load of flatulence comes from a guy who calls himself Beano. I think I speak for most Cubs fans here: Beano, you're describing a problem we'd all LOVE to have.
  4. Yeah. I hate guys who wear their sunglasses at night. Me too - Corey Hart sucks, all of them:
  5. Here's a fun coincidence: The Cubs took over first place on Aug 1 1984 by beating the Phillies 5-4(*) at Wrigley. They even scored the winning run walkoff style ... but a walkoff sac fly, not WP. http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CHN/CHN198408010.shtml They never gave up first place for the rest of the year. (*) actually this was the first game of a DH which they swept, and they officially took over first place after the 2nd game.
  6. [Mods: pls merge with existing Cubs Sale thread if you deem appropriate] Didn't see this posted anywhere: http://www.suntimes.com/business/493996,CST-FIN-cubs02.article Their website just came online: http://www.4fanssake.com/
  7. As Billy Beane says, the playoffs are a crapshoot. It's rare for the underdog to have less than a 40% chance of winning a single game, even in the biggest mismatches on paper. If the Cubs played the Braves or Mets in a 7-game series, as things stand today, they'd have no worse than a 44-45% chance of winning the series.
  8. 3-0, bags loaded, Wandy's walked in two and has yet to get anyone out ... he might not last the inning.
  9. Awesome. 8-)
  10. Teixeira first AB as a Brave, bags loaded ... Wandy wanted no part of him, ball four, 1-0 Braves. Welcome to the NL, Mark.
  11. Good god I can't wait to see him take the bump! Hopefully he can stay healthy for two months. Man, this year is one feel good story after another... I'm setting the DVR for Thursday and Friday. That ovation he's gonna get is gonna be awesome. Same here, in fact I just bought a new DVR and this will probably be the first thing I tape. I just wish I could be there to see his first appearance live. That standing o should be off the chart.
  12. But ... what .. wait I just don't ... what about Murt - :? ARGHHHHHH
  13. Yeah I think the Cubs already improved themselves vs LHP -- albeit marginally -- by bringing up the lovable redhead. Murton > Payton.
  14. Alright - bottom of the 7th, come on Little Red Machine, let's get some runs!
  15. I think a lot of us value Soto much like a street person with 3 cents in his pocket would value a quarter on the sidewalk. Having said that, I think the Hendry bashing is a little overboard re Kendall ... just my opinion. Kendall may be done - or maybe he's not - the book hasn't been written on him yet. Without the benefit of hindsight, that wasn't a terrible trade to make, given that Bowen was already dfa'd. But I really wanted to see Soto get more of a shot.
  16. I booked that game too, down 4-0 in the 9th, but the Giants just tied it :D that's gotta hurt if the Braves choke this one away (flashback to the Mets game earlier this year)
  17. Kerry, 1 IP, 1 walk, no hits, no runs - fastball 91-94 mph... Hank White catching.
  18. "Slider." Got it Jason? ("I don't have a problem with catchers...")
  19. Sad but true. That loudmouth who yelled at Kerry wasn't even a Cub fan; just an obnoxious, bandwagoning drunk.
  20. Seriously, I hope the Wrigley fans give him a 10 minute standing ovation the first day he takes the mound. Sadly, it will probably be the opposite. I doubt it. Kerry Wood is probably the most universally loved player the Cubs have had since Sandberg this is the over-statement, I believe most people pray he does well but expects his failure with him returning to the DL. I have never been a fan of his ever since he held out after he was drafted. I would say D. Lee is far more loved followed by Maddox I highly doubt Tommy Maddox is more loved than Kerry Wood I thought he meant Garry Maddox, Secretary of Defense and Awesome Facial Hair: http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/1332/2100/320/gmaddox86T.jpg But as far as beloved Cubs, there was that guy who wore #31 after Fergie and then was traded to Atl ...
  21. I like this BallFour guy for the Brewers - I think Ned should give him the ball more often.
  22. For comparison sake, consider that McGwire's record-breaking ball sold for $3M, but #67 and #68 sold for $50k and $55k. The HR record is just as monumental (asterisk or not) -- there will be a market for the last few balls before the record-breaking ball.
  23. I wish Hendry had just signed Byrnes when he was a FA. He's having a fine year for Ariz - definitely he's one of my fave players. But I'd worry that his current .863 OPS is a fluke, almost 100 pts higher than his career avg. Now might be the time to try to trade for him, because Ariz tried and failed to negotiate a contract extention with him in the past few days (probably why you're suggesting this deal now?) The Cubs need another masher in the OF. If not Byrnes I wish they would target Abreu, whose power numbers are steadily climbing after his early funk.
  24. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. btw OMC, that pic in your sig is just SO wrong  Ryan should go back to wearing the Captain America outfit.
