while I don't want yet another injury riddled season for yet another one of my teams, this could be a blessing in disguise. positional controversies in training camp tend to tear teams apart . this goes along way to eliminating said controversy which was already starting to bubble over.

The ump made the right call on the play. physically impossible. both by Bartman and by Alou. look at the replay sometime and try to re-enact what happens. look at where the ball is coming down and where Alou's glove is. if the ball were in the stands, Alou would have had to have reached across his right shoulder. he does not. he reaches above his head, aka in the field of play. it is nearly impossible for a righthanded player to reach over the wall with his body perpendicular to the wall like Alou was. his chest would have had to have been against the wall in order for him to reach into the stands. from Bartman's perspective, go to a game early sometime, go to the front row, and see where your hands are if you are bending over and reaching out like Bartman. again, in the field of play. I know. I've done it. I believe some physiologist wrote a paper on it which showed pretty conclusively it was physically impossible for that ball to have been in the stands unless both Bartman and Alou were trying to catch the ball at a point about a foot and a half from where it was coming down.

Seconded. I vote for "what went right since the ump failed to call the obvious fan interference"

:?: the explanation is really simple. he makes these caveats, yet argues how 'right' Ozzie is or how Ozzie is 'just stating the facts' or 'just telling it how it is' in other words, he tries for best of both worlds. condemning Ozzie for the things Ozzie says, while at the same time argreeing with every word that comes out of Ozzie's mouth, no matter how absurd. the irony is he says Ozzie is an idiot, but if recollection of this forum is correct, he agrees with just about everything Ozzie says, even while condemning him for it.
-
I've been clicking back and forth between watching Mr. Can't Keep His Pitch Count Below 100 In Five Innings and the Indians-Tigers game. the ESPN guys were just talking about that play (Stone and Phillips I think) and about how Ozzie said it was a good clean play. I am wondering how you reconcile your unwaivering support for just about everthing Ozzie says and your claim that Thames play was dirty.

Now Firmly in the Larry Dierker for Manager Camp
jjgman21 replied to vance_the_cubs_fan's topic in Chicago Cubs Talk
don't get me wrong, many of the philosophies are in line with what I believe in, but you simply can't overlook the pitcher abuse. if any of the "what ifs" could be reversed over that would have lead to better results over the past three seasons , it would have to be "what if Kerry Wood and Mark Prior were healthy." if Dierker had been the Cubs manager, nothing would be different. we would still be saying the same thing. all those great, young arms that went through Houston during his tenure, and the only one who survived Dierker's abuse was Oswalt. I just get a feeling we would be saying the same things we've been saying for years if Dierker took over, and I don't think I can take another year of saying "if our starting pitching stays healthy, we'll be fine." -
Sandberg > Morgan neither of which could sniff the jock of the best ever, but let's save it for that time. the thought just occurred to me when I saw the new thread. as for the best first baseman, again I have trouble doing rankings like this. too much to consider to complile a list, but as for the best, hands down, the Iron Horse. the guy is top 5 OPS+ ever. the only first basemen even close are Pujols and Foxx/McGwire. supposedly he had some other things going for him as well. if not for his pursuit of an education and the disease that bears his name, he'd be mentioned in the same breath as Aaron, Ruth, Williams, and he very much deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as those guys anyway.

Yeah, Wuertz had an ERA+ over 100 each of the last two years, and then has to languish in the minors most of this season. I vaguely understand how ERA+ works but I've never really seen it in use; would an ERA+ of 100 be good or bad? 100 would be park and league adjusted dead on average.

even injuries aside, there is alot in this game that is considered luck. the accepted line is that luck balances out, but it sure doesn't seem to. admittedly I watch mostly Cubs games wehn I watch baseball, but I seriously never see the types of things that happens to the Cubs happening to other teams. look at the game tonight. how many times have Cubs pitchers shattered bats the past three years, only to have the ball fall in for a key bloop hit that changes the outcome of a game. or Ronnie's second K tonight. how many times have you seen Cubs players take pitches that were close, but probably out of the zone, only to have the ump ring them up. the big inning last week when the Mets scored 11. let's not forget the first three hitters of that inning should have been out. IIRC there was a dribbler to Walker that he momentarily bobbled but Beltran was hustling. then an infield hit, then a blooper in the bermuda triangle, followed by Floyd flicking his bat out and reaching the basket. 1 foot either way on any of the four, and the inning is over. Preston Wilson goes opposite field for the first time in his career to get the key hit against the Cubs in a game this year. Prior was abused, but the in season injuries have had nothing to do with anything but bad luck. does anybody honestly believe the non ball/strike bad calls we have dealt with the past three years have evenned out in any way? watching the midseason webgem nominees in 2004. fully 40% of them were against the Cubs. watching the midsummer top plays for all of espn in 2004. three of them were agaisnt the Cubs. three of the top plays in all of sports against the Cubs. is that bad luck or did the Cubs somehow bring that on themselves? there's so much that goes wrong for the Cubs that can not be explained with anything but bad luck.

OMG, this is the reason he needs to go!!!!!! Thats what we are all in agreeance on. *Sarcasim* dude, I'm not sure what your post even means. perhaps you are agreeing with me, perhaps not. but I do know that these one line posts that add nothing to the conversation are not particularly welcome. I know you are relatively new, but the general idea here is to not be like the ESPN and Cubs.com boards.

IMO, young players need to be coached, veterans need to be chewed, when they screw up. Dusty's energy is completely misplaced and even if it were not, there's a time and a place for holding someone accountable, and that time and place is not in the dugout between innings.

not sure what world you are living in Soul. when I first began work at my former employer, we did all these team exercises about how we need to trust one another and how we should feel free to call each other out when we feel someone is not living up to their responsabilities and not being accountable for mistakes. this worked fine for about 8 months, when I didn't know enough about my job or organization to ever say anything. then I began to understand what the priorities were and how resources were best used and what the objectives of the office should be and what the best way to achieve said objectives are. I did what I was told to do when I began, called people out on avoiding responsabilities and accountability for about 8 months. they fired me last Friday. no matter how much people say they respect "telling it how it is," coworkers and bosses don't like being told they are screwing up. it does nothing but lead to extreme volitility in all but the most rare of circumstances. I don't think calling people out is what Aram did here, but I also don't think calling people out is generally a productive thing to do.

the bolded part is the operative sentence. the return on the trade doesn't look great to me, but noone on this board is in a postion to accurately assess these young pitchers. the farther down in the minors, the less likely the numbers will reflect what kind of a prospect the player is. judging low level ball players based on their stats and the published scouting reports is rather foolish. it's even a problem judging higher level prospects. no amount of stats would have told you that Jason Dubois couldn't recognize or hit a curveball, but the stats and BA sure made it seem like he could be a force at the major league level. it takes a combination of both in my opinion and the guys at BA often talk about their inability to fully cover all minor leaguers because of their lack of staff.

Fontenot. why, when people ask this or a similar question, do they not ask "where are the guys the Cubs traded away?" I'd like Hendry to turn water into wine too, but the players he's traded away weren't all that good. Sosa is done and had a terrible year last year. Cruz had one decent year under Mazzone anbd remains inconsistent. Farns had a decent year and is back to his old ways. before yesterday and his 5 for 5, Corey was at .308/.413. when the Cubs start trading away good players, they will start getting good prospects in return.

people need to realize that players don't stand on a box and start blabbing. they respond to questions. that's what TT was trying to say. let me try to plug a couple in and maybe recontextualize. to what do you attribute your hot streak? <> with Derrek still healing, do you again feel you have to carry the team? well that's not because of you. how's it feel having back to back days with 2 HRs? do you feel you have to win in order for Dusty to keep his job? thanks Aramis. I'll go cut those quotes up in my article now to make you look like you're bad seed.

Excuse me? I don't know where you're from, but the majority of Sox fans I know personally care much more about the Sox even during losing campaigns than they do about the Cubs. I know there are exceptions (see: WSI), but that's as farfetched as me saying absolutely everyone on this board is the same as CBB and/or goes to games to party. exactly where did I say all Sox fans act this way? where? I mean if I did, I'll admit my mistake, but I don't think you will find I did say anything of the sort. your dispute with what I said is done with conviction, but your dispute makes nothing I said less true. try replying to what I said instead of re-packaging it and replying to what you wanted me to say in order to scoff at it. you personal experiences mean nothing to me, when I have seen plenty of the phenomena of which I speak. apparently you didn't listen to alot of sports talk radio in October 2003. 'greatest moment in all my years of watching baseball' from caller after caller. or the revelry of Sox fans on the same venues in September 2004. nor did you hang around alot of message boards. the Cubs board at ESPN was infested with "Astros" fans from Chicagoland before I left for this board. the mods really should do something about your screen name. isn't that false advertising?

Interesting idea. We do it to make better stadiums to enjoy games in, why not do it for teams? (note: I'm speaking in a philosophical sense, not legal) I always thought the Cubs being owned by fan stockholders or owned publicly, like the Packers, would be awesome. wouldn't it be great to have a referendum on MacPhail.

The White Sox have finished under .500 exactly zero times in a year beginning with "200". The Tigers haven't even remotely contended in quite some time. Not to say that the fairweather attendance isn't annoying, but there are some degrees to look at there. Also the Sox fans started showing up in what, september? The tigers fans started showing up in May. One was waiting for something to cheer for, the other was waiting for a winner to cheer for. actually, I believe walk-up tickets were available to the division series games with the RedSox. they didn't have an advanced sell out until the ALCS...unless of course you include drunk Tuesdays or whatever they called it. I also don't think anyone rooted against the White Sox solely because of their attendance. the fairweatherness of their fans added to the contempt for their fans, not the contempt for the ballclub. but I suppose I do see the relation because my contempt for the White Sox is solely completely attributable to their fairweather, obnoxious fans. for instance, stop crying about Cub fans backing the Tigers, Twins and Indians when it's an indisputedable fact that many Sox fans have been huge Astro and Cardinal fans over the years.

Soriano to the Twins??
jjgman21 replied to CubsBullsBears's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
when was the last time they needed a deadline deal for a playoff push? Shannon Stewart? -
I think it is illustrative that, with all the rich baseball discussion going on between you and I, you chose this to comment on. you escalated the rhetoric with your "it's called IsoD" jab. you further escalated it with your rant on the word "dabbled." review the thread and see who gets pissy with who first. if my arguments aren't valid, counter them with better arguments, instead of resorting to sarcasm and condescention.
-
the new, streamilined answer to the question posed in the title of the thread...be the opposition when he starts the ballgame. that rotation has gone from "five number 1's" to "a number 2 and four number 5's" rather quickly.
-
Not only are the whitesox 6.5 out, but the Twins are now 3 behind the whitesox. with a chance to overtake them in a series this week. the AL wildcard race will be very interesting. can't believe that one of Toronto, NY, Minny, Boston, Detroit, Sox hasn't made any moves yet.

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/5800306?FSO1&ATT=HMA Gibbons sounds crazy. I don't blame him. Earlier that day Hillenbrand wrote on the bulletin board (that's used to post BP times) "Play for yourself." Then later he comes out and writes "the ship is sinking". This is all after whining about not being patted on the back enough after taking 4 days off for an adoption. After whining about it to the media, he passively instigated things with the entire staff, but then when he was called out on it he called up a reporter and arranged his own press conference to whine about being Gibbons being "very unprofessional." What a clown. This is the same guy who demanded he be traded out of Boston and called Theo a "faggot" on a radio show. lot's of additional facts are coming out about the circumstances. I am not defending Hillenbrand, but it turns out it was not just and adoption, it was complications in pregnancy by a surrogate mother, follwed by difficulty with the adoption. it really does sound like a rather traumatic life event. also, it sounds as if this has been festering for a long time and Riccardi has done nothing but fuel the fire. Shea sounds like a tool, but it seems this was handled in Cub like fashion by Toronto's management.
