  1. DVR super slow mo (1/15 speed on WGN's slow mo) on the angle from the centerfield cam reveals it was a good call at first.
  2. Marmol hit routine grounder to Rolen, Luna failed to get to second in time to take the throw, so Rolen had to go to first, throw sailed high pulling pujols off the bag momentarily. Cubs might have caught a break. it was real close.
  3. Cubs seem to have the most success against pitchers who try to get ahead early in the count, so you may be onto something. Also, the fact that Pujols has sucked against the Cubs so far this season has helped that endeavor greatly. as does Rolen's defense.
  4. Arams hit was down the line theory on Cubs success v. Cards this and last year - Duncan's philosophy of getting ahead early in the count falls right into the Cubs hitting philosophy's hand.
  5. Probably the same reason the press gave for why the Sox were/are pursuing Soriano. There's no pitching available, might as well improve where you can. if Beane holds onto Zito and the Giants hold onto Schmidt, which I think they both will as the playoffs are reachable, the top pitchers on the market are Livan and Maddux.
  6. looks like Cruz is having a good year at AAA (.309/.367/.523) but he's no spring chicken at 26. long time getting to the majors = high strikeout totals (100 in about 415 PAs) = can't hit an offspeed pitch? it should also be noted the initial reports didn't mention the Brewers also got a decent looking A ball pitcher in the deal. seems like a pretty fair deal to me.
  7. That's a good point. I'm not trying to say he's having an amazing power year. He's down. He's not the player he was at his peak. But he's still good and it's completely asinine to say all he does is walk. Bobby Abreu would improve this team a significant amount. Cost is an issue, but when measured against other potential acquisitions, it's not that big of an obstacle. I think earlier in this thread or in another it says Abreu is demanding his option be picked up and he be given and extnesion if traded to the Yankees, with a chance to win a WS this year! if that's the case, I don't see him allowing a trade to the Cubs without an extension, and if that's the case, getting Abreu would be a huge mistake, don't you agree?
  8. What's with this "all he does is walk" crap? He's still hitting .280, higher than all but 3 Cubs, and has 35 XBH, more than all but 2 Cubs. I also don't understand what the futility of the current Cubs has to do with the quality of baseball player Abreu is. those numbers are also taken way out of context. I don't think its fair to use these generalities considering the absense of Lee. if Lee were healthy, I think it fair to say Abreu would be fourth in XBH on the current Cubs. you also need to consider he is only ahead of Barrett by 3 XBH. take away the suspension, and suddenly Abreu would be fifth in XBH on the Cubs. also, I know you don't believe all that much in the importance of average, but let's give what you say above some more context 332 Barrett 288 Jones 285 Murton 280 Abreu 279 Pierre 278 Walker 268 Aram considering the way Abreu has been going and the way Aram, Walker, Pierre have been going, it's likely Abreu would be 7th on the team in average in about three days.
  9. I agree with sulley - I think people got the wrong idea about Abreu after he mashed in the HR derby last year. He's never hit more than 31 HR's for a season (2001). And he hit only 20 HR's in both 2002 and 2003 -- despite playing in all but five games over those two seasons. But the guy hits doubles like there's no tomorrow. Please, Mr Hendry, figure out a way to trade for him before the Cardinals do. (I get a kick out of the fact that his middle name is Kelly: Bob Kelly Abreu.) just because he didn't hit as many HRs earlier in his career as many may think doesn't mean his power isn't rapidly declining. he was a 25-30 HR guy, that is true. but he hit only 6 post all-star game last year and only 8 through 2/3 of the season this year. yes, he's always been a doubles machine, but he's on pace to hit about 25 percent fewer doubles this year than his career average. all while playing his home games in one of the most homer friendly parks in baseball. I mean what is so hard to understand here? career 507 99 549 00 554 01 543 02 521 03 468 04 544 (moved to Citizens Bank from the Vet) 05 474 (526 first half, 411 second half) 06 438 the only argument that his power isn't rapidly declining is that it is steadily declining.
  10. I agree to a point, but who becomes the big bopper on the Brew Crew now? Every lineup needs 1-2 guys to produce the big numbers, and the Brewers just got rid of their guy. I'd be ticked if I was a Brewers fan that the team couldn't work a deal to get Lee signed long term. I'd be slightly disappointed if I were a Brewers fan, but knowing Lee just rejected a fair offer would temper any disappointment. I don't like the sound of Abreu at 15M for two years, Lee at 15M for five years is absurd. a platoon of Mench/Gross in left likely puts up the similar numbers as Lee
  11. getting on base 2 out of every 5 times he steps to the plate is just the sort of non-help the Cubs need. If thats the case why was Yost benching him? I don't know that he's been benched. he's been losing starts here and there to Gross all year. Yost also has been failing to take advantage of his value by burying him in the 8 hole in half his starts.
  12. with the Brewers supposedly in the running for Maddux, what does everyone think of Maddux for Clark and Mench? gives you OBP out of center and a right handed platoon with Jones in right. then trade Pierre for a decent prospect or two. this of course also assumes the Cubs aren't able to get a blue chipper from SD or LA for Maddux and that Maddux approves the move up north. I don't think Maddux would accept a trade to the Brewers, as tempting as it may be to join his brother. Maddux, if traded, will go to a contender where he will have a shot to win a W.S. so in other words, SD or nothing, which cripples the Cubs chances of getting anything good considerably. the Dodge-bones are farther out than the Brewers and sinking fast.

  14. I don't think this can be viewed as them being sellers. the did bring in a legit major league closer and an established (not great, established) outfield bat. when looking at what they gave up they look like sellers. when looking at what they brought in, they look like buyers. on balance, they improved their team, exactly what a certain GM 90 miles south should be doing.
  15. Brewers have been stuggling as of late. I think they might see themselves as sellers now. Don't know if they are still looking to add at this point. I suppose they would be squeezing the weenie baloon by making that deal. without the Lee or Mench/Clark they don't have the offense.

  17. so what you are saying is that you haven't gathered all the evidence possible, and you haven't gathered as much as I have gathered, but you know for sure. you're so openminded about it. it's so obvious you have considered my point of view. now go over to a wall, put your right shoulder against it, imagine a ball is flying to the otherside of the wall, and see if you would be able to reach it. I admire your attempt to be a stand up guy and not make excuses. doesn't change this one simple fact...physically impossible.
  18. dumping Nevin and Maddux would pay the 2007 salaries of Rusch and Neifi and allow you to DFA them. I admit I'm getting very impatient.
  19. where's "every team in baseball for stealing Tony LaRussa's and Mark Buehrle's signs?"
  20. I'm a marginal critic, but the man's en fuego. I don't think he's made an out, much less strikeout, the past two games.
  21. holy feakin' D. nice couple plays by Neifi there, lot's of really nice plays throughout the game.
  22. does anyone remember the last series at Wrigley that Mr. All-time except for Brooks Robinson didn't have an error? he seems to make two a series every trip to Chicago.
  23. The fact that they would let him manage out the season can only mean they want him back, and it's just a matter of Dusty accepting. There's just no way they would let him manage out the season if they intended to let him walk. So for me, what matters is him staying on right now, because after that decision, the rest is inevitable. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he is given an offer to come back, but I see no reason why this announcement makes that inevitible and can only mean one thing. this decision means nothing to me in terms of what the future of Dusty Baker with the Cubs is. another thing it could mean - - all but Rothschild and Quade are Dusty Baker hires. firing him in all likelihood means firing the lot of them. you don't want to do that when you don't have replacements lined up. if you don't have replacements lined up in house, which the Cubs really don't and if they tried it would blow up the management throughout the system, I imagine drawing a bunch of interims from around baseball is next to impossible. this decision and announcement could mean alot of things.

while I don't want yet another injury riddled season for yet another one of my teams, this could be a blessing in disguise. positional controversies in training camp tend to tear teams apart . this goes along way to eliminating said controversy which was already starting to bubble over. Good point. If he misses time I will be sad because I'll miss his enourmous arms. http://widewordofsports.com/images-thomas%20jones2.JPG Sick. all the evidence you need that Congress' focus on roids in baseball is incredibly short sited. great, the NFL has had a policy in place for years. just look how successful it is.
