  1. This facility will serve the Cubs for 30 years. Today's intense demand for ST tickets may well erode in coming seasons, especially as the Cubs' national fandom declines absent the reach of 160 games on WGN and the presence of expansion teams in places like Phoenix and Denver, places in which large numbers of western fans latched onto the team in the 1980s. The Cubs have to prepare for a future in which they may need to work to build spring crowds. Naples is 500 miles closer to Wrigley Field, the Grapefruit schedule is more interesting and Florida is a longstanding vacation destination.
  2. I don't necessarily see any significance in the "drought" being over. I do however think it's very interesting that for the first time in recent memory you had a significant number of key players from a "dynasty" that was long past - Jeter, Posada, Rivera and Pettite - winning another title in the same uniform. Imagine parts of the '76 Reds - say Rose, Concepcion and Perez - remaining competitive into their twilight years and winning the 1985 Series for Cincinnati. It would be the stuff of legend, and I think the '09 Yankees would be regarded as such if not for the jealousy and hatred directed their way.
  3. Sterling and Waldman are the absolute worst in the business.
  4. I disagree. Revenue certainly is an important factor in these discussions.
  5. 2000 feels like a long [expletive] time ago. 151 days till the sun shines again.
  6. Interesting that Philadelphia has chosen to wear the Cool Base jerseys throughout the postseason.
  7. So only rich whites are racist? An intolerant person is not going to live in that neighborhood.
  8. I'd wager that Wrigleyville/Lakeshore is among the most eclectic stadium neighborhoods in the country. I'd also wager that most of the hate mail isn't postmarked "Chicago."
  9. Kenney is deeply involved with the ballpark renovation project. He's also going to be the hatchet man when it comes time to cut Mesa loose/tell Naples to bug off.
  10. Really? I love it. The WBC extension means we'll have just two months with no baseball. Long, bleak offseasons suck.
  11. I'm not sure the competition really matters all that much in the spring. The Cubs sell-out in Arizona already. People go to games to see a spring training game, they don't care who the other team is. The people that should be worried are the other teams/towns in Arizona that lose a huge road draw when Cbus fans who can't get into Hohokam go to the other parks. I am aware of the Cubs' gate performance in Arizona. I believe it has the potential to be even better.
  12. Lowell was highly sought after that summer.
  13. The more I think about it, the less sense it makes for the Cubs to be in the desert. Look at the teams in the Cactus League, and then look at the Grapefruit. The desert schedule is a sleeper aside from the matchups with the Dodgers and White Sox. In Florida, you'd see the Cardinals, Yankees, Red Sox, Mets and Phillies. If facilities are equal in both states, the potential ticket revenue alone (in Naples and otherwise) puts Florida ahead.
  14. Happy for A-Rod, pissed that this could be all over with by this time tomorrow.
  15. And at the end of October, no less! Shocking!! Yeah, it never rains in April, May, June, July, August or September. Stupid Selig.
  16. It is fascinating to think that these events were borne largely thanks to the seeds planted by Jim Dowdle and Dallas Green nearly 30 years ago. After selling millions upon millions of tickets and t-shirts and beers, today marks the culmination of the Tribune's ultimate, final sale on the themes of bricks and ivy and fun at the old ballpark. Harry Caray would be delighted to know that among those singing with him in the 1980s were the kids who would one day give nearly a billion dollars for the whole thing,
  17. He also said Florida is a very real possibility for ST. That was a refreshingly candid interview on Kenney's part.
  18. Thanks to MLBN, ESPN is no longer a concern for me. My DVR is set for "Baseball Tonight" just in case they air a segment worth watching. Having said that, there is much, much better analysis available on the 'net than what you see on either channel.
  19. On the fool's errand of installing a video screen: Tom Ricketts is awesome.
  20. Still trying to come to terms with Hairston in the World Series.
  21. Didn't say it wasn't. Put it this way - I'd rather watch a [expletive] like Reynolds talk baseball than see the very best in the business talk about anything else.
  22. Best thing about MLBN is that you will never see football, basketball, hockey or whatever other backwash ESPN chooses to promote in the middle of summer or on the day of WS Game 1. Bad baseball analysis is better than yet another roundtable with Jaworski and the rest.
  23. Lee's antics have him on the edge of showing up the Yankees, but I think it's awesome.
  24. Lame. The Yankees have to be steamed that so many Philadelphia fans made it into the park.
